Hey Everybody

My name is KathyD. I had open rny November 2001. I weighed 426 lbs. I lost

105 lbs in 13 months and then I did not lose another pound. In 2003 I gained and

lost the same 3 pounds every 2 weeks so I have maintained the same weight for a

year now. Don't get me wrong, I'm still glad I had the surgery. 105 lbs is

nothing to snub your nose at, and in all my years of dieting, I have NEVER gone

a whole year without gaining at least 20 pounds. And I did lose the weight

without exercising or really watching what I ate so this really has been like a

miracle for me. I'm just a little disappointed that after all I have been

through, I'm still not below 300 lbs. I have made plans to start walking at

least 4 times a week (me a two other ladies are going after work--they're on

Weight-watchers) Plus I got a letter from the Alumni Assoc. at my school

offering me a membership in the new rec/wellness center at the University and

I've decided to join. I just don't want to follow a diet so I'll just cut way

back on carbs and sweets, supplement a meal or two with a protein drink and

increase my water intake. Hopefully this will get me back on the losing side.

Are there any others out there who have been on extended plateaus :-) Were you

able to start losing again? I still have the " tool " .

I still get full fairly quickly, I can't overdo sweets, I can't drink soda, I

very rarely get " hungry " . I'm just scared that I'll wake up one day and these

tools will be gone. What about you 3 year+ post-ops. Do you still have the

" tools " . Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

KathyD (Can't wait to be a loser again)

Welcome Kathy,

I have actually gained weight this last 12 to 15 months. I

discovered recently that I had a staple line disruption. Have you had

your mechanics checked?

Hi Kathy,

I am 8 years out from a distal RNY. I started at 275 and presently weigh

138. I went through a period of malnutrition and anemia 2 years ago, going

from 145 to 162 lbs and then back down to holding steady for a year at

152/154. Then, when I went to the doctor early January (NOTE - AFTER THE

HOLIDAYS), I was down to 138. I have NO clue as to why I am losing weight.

I'm NOT trying. I really don't think about food. The only thing I can

think of is that I'm finally ACTUALY making a conscious effort to get in all

of my vitamins and all my protein. I have upped my calcium from pretty much

325 mg a day (I know me bad) to about 3000 mg a day, and the weight seems to

be coming off. My employees have been noticing too. Even hubby was

concerned the other day. (I'm thinking - GEESH it's ONLY 12 lbs!). I wear

a very comfortable size 4 jeans, although I could still wear those at 152

lbs. Weird, huh?

My only thought to the calcium is that I recall reading articles about " milk

diets " cuz our body needs calcium and that drinking milk will help us lose

weight. Well, I'm totally intolerable to milk, and my surgeon always forbid

it, so I don't do it (read SCARED), but I did quantify that with calcium

which is what they say helps lose weight from milk. Hey, it's worth a shot!

I don't eliminate carbs. I pretty much eat " normal " . Although I guess I

just don't eat much. I tell myself if I want a snack, then it's a

carb/protein or just a protein - never fruit on an empty stomach (read

DIARRHEA).

Of course, YMMV....
