Guest guest
It adds more stomach acid to the acid that your stomach naturally makes- and is supposed to help the stomach with digestion. This is why you take it while you eat. Eating also stimulates the stomach to make it's own acid. The burning would be felt if you had too much acid- which is why you are told to stop if your feel it- in your stomach area. PJ > > Can anyone explain the purpose of Betaine HCL? I was told to take it months ago and totally missed the point. Messed up on the dosages and finally quit taking it. So now I'm on it again and am a little confused as to why and how. I started with 1 tablet ( " midmeal " - after a couple of bites?) and am now taking 2 with each meal. I was supposed to stop at one tablet if I felt any " burning " . Is that the kind of burning that comes up into your throat, like acid reflux? And would it be immediate or sometime later, like hours after you eat? Never know the right questions to ask when I'm talking to the doctor, so glad I can sound this off of you guys. > (from Colorado) > IBS > SCD 2 months >

Guest guest
I have used Zypan by Standard Process with good results, but it does have lactose, so it is officially illegal. > > What's a good brand of Betaine HCl? > > Mara >

Guest guest
Mara, You want to look for a betaine HCL With Pepsin and no other things like enzymes or digestive support. Powder form is " safer " than liquid form. Thorne and Integrative make the higher dose ones, if you buy that than just open the capsule and divide it. It is important to gradually increase HCL dosage and monitor yourself. Jodi > > What's a good brand of Betaine HCl? > > Mara >

Guest guest
Mara, First of all you want to find out your own theraputic dosage for HCL (everyone is different) while not OD'ing on other things- it is best to work up to the right dosage- park there for a while and then in theory we should be able to reduce it. Supplementing with HCL enables us one day to produce our own adequate amounts of stomach acid. Also, Biogest although not a bad supplement contains only pancreatic enzymes along with oxbile. The dosage for the HCL and pepsin is quite low. Personally, you are much better off using a broad spectrum enzyme (especially if you have yeast issues) that way you can use it with a variety of meals.
