Yes, I think I have. If I spend a lot of time with a hairdo, make-up

and new clothes and no one notices, I feel disappointed.

I am definitely vain, or I feel like I am. I have to check myself out in

almost every mirror I pass. I also always turn sideways to admire my

flat stomach. I don't know if that's really vanity or not, but whatever.

I had enough years of avoiding mirrors and feeling like I looked like

shit that I think maybe they cancel out.

Ya know, I think that the farther out I get, the less I do this. I

got to my current weight about 2 yrs ago and did the

window/mirror " check out " for over a year, give or take a month. Now

I don't do it so often. Maybe I am finally beginning to adjust?

I wouldn't say vain, but when all dressed up, I do admire what I see

in the mirror! And I pout if hubby does not " say " something nice!

After all those years of avoiding the mirror and vainly searching for

an outfit that makes me look less fat, its now a pleasure to wear

fitted clothes and admire me in them...now without clothes, another

story!!

Along this same line of thought, has anyone else noticed that they

are wearing clothes that are a little " young " for them? Maybe I

should address this to those of us who have been obese our whole

I am thrilled that the bell bottoms are back. When I was young (way

back when) I was to big to wear these. I was stuck in strech slacks

bell bell-bottom pants that I just couldn't resist! Got them and

Fay,

I guess it kinda takes me back to my MO days when I felt like the

world was looking at me and turning up their collective noses. Ya

know? Of course it's not gonna stop me from dressing nice even if

it is bell bottoms, LOL!

My opinion is wear what makes you feel good. Bell bottoms, mini skirts,

granny sweaters. If it makes you feel good, go for it. The only person I

listen to about what looks good on me is my hubby. And he'll tell me I look

best in nothing. LOL. I'll be 48 next month. My mother just turned 66 last

October, and I'd raid her closet any day. Except she is 5'6, and wears a

size 2. Darn. (She's also 20 years post WLS)

Hi Reba,

Although I haven't bought anything terribly young for me (except maybe my denim

jacket) I walk through the mall drooling at the following stores - Charlotte

Russe, Forever 21, New York Incorporated...all full of belly shirts, red leather

halter tops and hip huggers. As I have discovered butt be back BIG TIME I

cannot wear any low cut pants - they don't go over my butt.

I am not dressing old either - I am 40. I find I do best at the department

stores (Macy's, Strawbridges - clearance rack only) and perhaps TJ's and

Marshalls...

However a girl can dream...

Dear Reba,

Back in the day (around 1968-69), I was way too fat for girl's

bellbottoms. My mom worked for the Navy, so I was able to get men's low

rise bell bottoms (size 42 waist) to fit. They had these ENORMOUS bells

on them and I loved 'em and wore 'em to death. The best part was they

only cost $5 a piece at the PX back then. I was 14 or 15 at the time.

Now, I'm 2 months shy of 50 and, for the first time in almost 35 years,

wearing bell bottoms again. They are my jeans of choice. Always have

been. It may, or may not, look age appropriate, but I don't feel my

age, and I know I don't look my age. As for dressing how you would

think I should dress at my age, well, hell, I did that for the past 35

in-between years. I'm reclaiming my lost clothing youth in this new

millennium and enjoying every moment of it. I'm glad to see you're

doing the same...

And Fay, I LOVE your attitude.

Do ya' remember the old Ditto jeans? Well, I was way too fat to ever

even consider wearing 'em when they were first out many, many years

ago. Found a pair of Tommy Hilfiger pants on the clearance rack at

Macy's that were made just like the old Ditto's- I bought 'em! And

not only that but they were a light beige to boot! I proudly wear

those darn size 10 pants now.

I wear whatever I think looks good on me and makes me feel good. It also

has to be comfortable. Now that I can wear a much smaller size, I have more

choices than I used to and I can wait for exactly the right outfit. I have

to be totally crazy about it before I buy it.

I do most of my shopping at second hand-stores. I prefer this, as I have

more style choices. Some seasons, most of the new clothes are in colors

that I cannot wear. At second hand stores, there is always a color just

right for me, if I look long and hard enough. Of course I also enjoy the

hunt.

And, it could be that the college students are looking at you because they

admire you style. I think we are in a very good time now fashion-wise, in

that we can wear anything we want. You can pick your own style.

JEANS

i have never ever in my entire 43 years of life ever owned a pair of jeans

when they did fit, i did not think they looked good on a fat girl

later, they simply did not fit

now that i can wear them, i refused out of spite/protest/fear to buy jeans

today for the first time i decided that i was being silly

i can and should wear whatever the heck i want

so i did it!!

and they were size 8 extremely low rise, slight flare express jeans

the cutest trendiest smallist jeans i could get

in fact i went to the saleslady and explained quite embarrasingly my dilemna

i told her i thought i was a 12

she measured me, combed the entire store and every style until we found the

perfect most flattering pair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and they were size 8

did i say they were size 8??????

ok i know i am way too excited about a pair of jeans

but this is a first for me

LOL

now wait til i wear them in public

gotta buy some low rise panties first LOL

oh lordy, trendy hussy here i come

my dh will faint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The whole age thing is weird. When I look at fat pictures of me, I looked

much older than I was----when I lost my weight, so many people said to me

that I looked 10-15 years younger---I'm only 37. When I was fat, I had a

hard time finding cute, fashionable and affordable clothes that reflected my

" age " . Now, I'm buying stuff in the Junior's section and my 15 year old

daughter is actually borrowing my clothes! When I'm looking around in the

juniors section, there are some things that I won't wear simply because they

do look too young for me (meant to be worn on a young hard-body, not a soft

and squishy, had 5 kids and lost tons of weight body, LOL) but for the most

part I go by the " If I like it, I'm gonna wear it " rule. I don't think age

should have anything to do with it---just whether YOU like it or not and as

long as it looks good on you.

Reba,

Yup, that's me.

I think I need a make-over from those " What Not to Wear " folks.

I have 17 year old twin girls, always ragging on me that my pants are too tight.

(size 4, Old Navy boot cut low rise) Quite a switch from the

-the-tent-maker duds I sported for the previous 20 years.
