Guest guest
It's a piece of playground equipment - a slide is what it's called by most people. The other day, I was talking to my husband about when we were kids and the stuff we did. He grew up in Missouri and Texas; I was born and raised in Queens, NY. Somehow during that conversation, the words "sliding pond" came out of my mouth. I got a quizzical look on my face (even though I was the one who said it), and my husband said "huh?" We determined that I was talking about a "slide". When I got home, I googled it, only to learn that it is (was?) a term used only in NYC for a slide. Just a New Yorkism - wondered if another NYer used it too. Guest guest
Beth - When I heard that term come out of my mouth, it stunned me. I hadn't said that term out loud for many years, and it sounded strange to me - like "what the heck do they call that thing I think is a sliding pond". Sliding pond just seemed wrong, and yet -- it was right. But only used in NYC. Go figure. Whodathunkit? I wonder what else I think is "normal" terminology that perhaps is just local to NY? Somehow during that conversation, the words "sliding pond" came out of my mouth. I got a quizzical look on my face (even though I was the one who said it), and my husband said "huh?" We determined that I was talking about a "slide".. When I got home, I googled it, only to learn that it is (was?) a term used only in NYC for a slide. Just a New Yorkism - wondered if another NYer used it too. Guest guest
No, I don't. There were a lot of families of German descent there, as was my (adoptive) Dad. His family name was Herleth. We think the neighborhood we lived in was the model for Archie Bunker territory (from the way it looked). We lived across the street from Woodhaven lanes. Guest guest
i call a bag in the supermarket a bag when i moved out west, they called the supermarket bag, a sac, i think that was their term, it's been a long time interesting how everyday terminology varies in various parts of the country in Philly we have hoagies, other places call them heros, and other places call them subs in Philly we have steak sandwiches that are different from anyplace else that i have ever lived, except for the Jersey shore Pink Joyce R (IPF 3/06) IFA 5/09 Pennsylvania Donate Life Listed 1/09 Inactive 4/09 www.transplantfund.org--- Subject: Re: Re: Hey Terre.... - To: Breathe-Support Date: Sunday, January 10, 2010, 10:29 PM Beth - When I heard that term come out of my mouth, it stunned me.
