Guest guest
There is a SIBO breath test. My doctor ordered this for me this Spring and it was positive. A different thing than yeast, though both conditions should improve on SCD.I read about the SCD several months before trying it. I was also concerned that my food choices would be severely limited. My body cannot do dairy, eggs and many recipes seemed to include these foods. But when the SIBO test came back positive (and I have also had problems with yeast the past couple of years), I thought changing my diet to starve these nasties would be a good idea. I also had experimented with a GF diet that included rice, potatoes, etc. and found that I was still struggling with bloating and constipation. So I knew I didn't want to repeat that. Even though I can easily fill a large sheet of paper with foods my body doesn't tolerate, I am eating very well on the SCD. I also must limit the honey and fruit in order to feel well. But I am enjoying my food, feeling very satisfied and feeling MUCH better than I have in a decade. I also notice there are many, many people in that same boat with long lists of foods they don't tolerate well at first. Some find that they are able to tolerate more foods as they go and I hope to be one of those people. Best wishes,KelleyCeliac 4/10SCD 5/10 Hi everyone, I am relatively new to this group but have been reading the posts for the past few weeks and learning about SCD. My naturopath thinks I have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and recommended looking into SCD. She warned me that it was very restrictive though so she gave me some berberine to try along with whatever dietary changes I could manage to make towards SCD. I am reading the BVC book and also just started reading The Body Ecology Diet (BED) book. Both books claim to heal the gut. I am getting confused as to which diet to follow. Maybe this is out of the scope of this forum, but I thought that if anyone would know the answer or had the same struggle, it would be someone in this group. The problem is that I do not tolerate a lot of the SCD legal foods such as dairy or lots of protein in the form of meat and eggs. Also, I sometimes have right sided pain when I eat anything sugar-y including honey and fruits and then go downhill from there. When I started reading the BED book, I noticed it listed a lot more of the foods I can tolerate and also does not advocate sugar in any form including fruit or honey. BED does allow for gluten free grains in small quantities but no nuts. So, my questions, what is the difference between bacterial overgrowth and yeast overgrowth or are they just two ways of saying the same thing? If not, how do you know when you have one versus the other? What are differentiating symptoms? If not, does SCD treat yeast overgrowth? Has anyone tried BED? If so, did it work? TIA for your inputs! Yes, SCD does. I have a personal prejudice against BED for reasons which don't bear going into, sicne this list has nothing to do with BED and everything to do with SCD. You don't HAVE to do nuts. You don't HAVE to do dairy, and there's nothing which says you can't eat lots of veggies and go low on meat. The thing I like best about SCD is that the only thing you have to buy is a copy of BTVC. And your food. Most of these diets have all sorts of supplements and this food and that drink and the other thing which can only get from the person promulgating the diet. Gets real expensive, real fast. I tried a whole whack of diets in the 25 years before I found SCD. Some with remarkable similarity to some others. Nothing worked except SCD. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Yash, A lot of us can't do dairy, honey, too much fruit, and/or much in the way of nuts... including myself. And it's not unusual for docs to lump microflora together and call them " bacteria " . Yeast, of course, AREN'T bacteria but I guess they're trying to speak simply for many patients who ain't got a clue. I think they're generally meaning the same thing as we do. Guest guest
All, Thank you all for your insights so far. I see my naturopath tomorrow and will also ask her what she thinks about Bacterial Overgrowth vs. Yeast. I guess part of me was just wondering if I was in the right place. I don't have (or at least don't think I have) UC or Crohn's. I had some digestive issues before giving birth but had a botched c-section followed by 3 additional surgeries which of course came with infections and anti-biotics and LOTS of stress. Now, my guts are pretty messed up and overly sensitive to lots of foods. I don't get diarrhea very often. I do get bloated and constipated and do often have loose stools, and I never feel like I'm eliminating nearly as much as I'm eating. I feel funny talking about my BMs to a bunch of strangers (and potential non-strangers), but I suppose I'll get more comfortable with it as most on this list seem to be? I also get super irritable when my guts feel out of whack, and as I'd mentioned, I get pain to the right of my belly button when I eat sugar-y things. Does anyone else get this or know what it is? I am not following SCD 100% yet but am working towards eliminating things slowly and have been feeling better, especially in the last few days when I've cut back on the fruits and honey. I am also taking oregano oil the last few days so maybe that's helping. Are there people who were once unable to tolerate many of the SCD legal foods who are now able to tolerate them? I would love to hear that by being strict for a while, I will one day be able to eat a little more of a variety again, not in excess, of course, but some moderation would be nice. Thanks again for your support and insights! Yash
