Guest guest
Hi , Based on your lab results and such, I'd suggest going with that style of diet that worked for you. For grains/non-SCD starches I would suggest sweet potato, potato, rice, and buckwheat to make up the bulk. Juicing vegetables with herbs can help get some nutrients without irritating the gut. Raw egg yolks might be a good addition with lots of nutrients and only a small amount of protein. If you're doing yogurt, make it with high fat milk (less protein). Focus on trying new fats like coconut oil, lard, tallow, butter, ghee from good sources. Also broth is very healing without being high in protein. I do think it's possible for some people to have healing without being heavy on meats. Just focus on what you can eat and monitor your kidney function with the help of your doctors. By the way, have you researched baking soda for kidney health? Your doctor might actually know about that too.Kathttp://scdkat.com I wrote in way back in January about my kidneys failing while on Remicade and SCD. I stopped the Remicade immediately, but continued with SCd for a while until my kidney function dropped to the point of beginning dialysis. I did a bunch of reading and though the doctors said diet didn't have a part (don't we hear this all the time?!) in the very high concentration of protein being found in my urine, I found that when I cut WAY back on protein, to basically nothing, that my kidney function increased steadily. This was near impossible for me to maintain legal SCD (I had been eating good quality meats, cheeses, yard eggs, organics all around) because I do not tolerate many fruits and veggies, especially raw ones, and I was so hungry all the time and so tired. With the advice of many and for my own sanity I began to eat some rice based/gluten free items here and there with the plan to return to SCd when my kidneys were back in a normal range of function. I was doing fine and the kidney function went from 30 to 66 (August tests), so about a month ago I went back to SCd because I DO think it is a better way to eat. I thought I was doing ok, but today, when I went to the nephrologist, my protein numbers are really high again and my kidney function has fallen 12 points, down to 54. I am so discouraged and just don't know what to do. If I eat for one organ it hurts the other. I feel like throwing my hands in the air and giving up on all fronts...I can't win. Now, I did have a small flare with B and M in my BMs starting 2 weeks ago, and though that seems to be under control right now, I wonder if they are connected? I have been on the intro diet for a LONGGGGG time trying to get everything back to normal and have just started adding more foods. Not sure if anyone can really help here, but I just needed to get it out with people who also struggle with multiple health issues and how to balance it all. Guest guest
I haven’t had to deal with kidney disorders, but I do have to deal with multiple health issues where diet does play a role. I have found that through a combination of research and experimentation I have been able to find the right amount and combination of SCD foods that work for my various body system issues. That is what I find so wonderful about SCD, is that we can usually fine-tune the food choices to suit our various health issues. Obviously your body doesn’t handle protein. Have you tried a digestive enzyme? The enzyme, in combination with eating tiny amounts of protein, might help. There might even be a single-enzyme supplement available that can help you target protein digestion (protease). You’ll probably have to experiment a bit to find the right digestive enzyme for you, and how much protein you can safely consume in a day’s time. I wouldn’t try eating any raw vegetables for a while, but you should be able to find the right mix of cooked veggies and fats, if you can process fats OK, that will keep you full and not tax your kidneys. And give your digestion a chance to recover. Vegetable broth and soup can be very tasty. The early months of healing will be difficult and frustrating, but eventually, as your digestion heals, you’ll be able to expand your food selection even if you can’t add a lot of proteins because of your kidney disorders. I know from experience how tricky it can be getting the right balance of foods that cause the least impact to multiple body systems. It takes some time, and patience is required. I used nutritional charts in combination with researching my health issues, to figure out what foods might work best for me, but then I still had to test and experiment a bit since my body does better with certain foods at different times of day, and how I prepared the foods, and in what combination I ate them…. So lots of fine-tuning. And as my body continues to deteriorate, and new health issues develop, I continue to fine-tune SCD for me. But given that I don’t have any alternatives (grains and starches make me severely symptomatic), I am willing to spend the time and energy into making SCD work for me. Kim M. Guest guest
Hi , I honestly have no real experience with what you are dealing with - just wanted to second some of the things other folks said - like maybe trying a good veggie broth and coconut oil. I have had a rough month, and am now really enjoying a simple veggie broth/puree made with onion, celery, and carrots, cooked for a long time, then pureed in the cooking water, and then I heat and serve in smaller batches. At this moment in time I perfect it sans chicken. Think I am just burnt out on chicken I also just fell in love with coconut oil. I starting taking a few tablespoons of it a day, and my poops firmed right up for the first time in months. I have been reading all this wonderful stuff about coconut oil, and it's anti-inflamatory properties http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/ and I just bought virgin coconut oil from http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/about.htm This advice might be totally useless, but I just wanted to chime in, as this is what getting me through this week. Also, my doc is having me go for ultrasound tomorrow as he thinks part of my problem/pain might be my kidneys as well. Oh - to dream of a day in life without pain!!! I wish you all the best in finding the diet that works best for you!!! - SCD 4 Months > > > > > > > I wrote in way back in January about my kidneys failing while on Remicade > > and SCD.
