This may be a dumb question - how is the splint placed (only on the outer,

or inside too)? My OS said that he placed splint on the upper part, and I do

feel that my upper mouth to be " full " , but, i can't seem to " find " the

" guard " . I am banded shut (done with 2, 4 more weeks to go).

Thanks,

Hey, I just got my splint out too (a couple days ago) it was in for

4 weeks too and I have no feeling in my top teeth because i haven't

used them in so long! My diet has gone up from mushy food to a full

diet chewing is really weird and it took me a while to get used to

it but now the only thing i can't eat is salad!

And for your question about whether or not you will need a splint.

If you are only having lower jaw surgery no. The splint is to hold

the jaw in place if you are having your upper jaw widened so you

shouldn't need one.

But I am sure glad I don't have the splint anymore because i can

talk normally now!

Hi Pam,

I just couldn't find it :-) Maybe, it is not there. The doc did say that i

had splints for upper. I couldn't see anything in the mirror. the insides of

my mouth is still numb, but, I have this feeling of a something " plastic "

under the roof (closer to my back teeth) of my mouth from inside.

Guess, I will have to wait until my next appt with my OS to ask :-)

Thanks,

Sriram

Hi Sriram, it sort of fits around your top teeth like a hockey

mouth guard, only alot smaller - there are indents in the splint

that are in the shape of your upper teeth, so it fits just under

your braces. And there are indents for your bottom teeth to fit as

you close your jaw, which guides your bite to the right spot,

although being banded your jaw isn't opening yet. My splint was

wired into my braces, so I couldn't remove it.

It's clear, so maybe it's hard for you to see - can you see it when

you look in the mirror - a plastic piece sitting just below your

braces?
