Guest guest
Rani,The sulfasalazine is not a steriod or antibiotic. It is the first generation, so to speak, of the more current drug Asacol. You should have to worry about it affecting yeast -- it is an anti-inflammatory.There are several things you can be doing to fight the yeast. Fresh Garlic and Carrot juice, coconut oil, oil of oregano, olive leaf extract are just a few. I think the coconut oil is probably the easiest. Work her up to 3 tablespoons a day and give her plenty of epsom salt baths to help with the detox symptoms. Because coconut oil has a high smoke point, you won't 'ruin' it by heating it, but my kids love the richness that it adds when I mix it in with their yogurt. I add it to my tea and coffee too.I think your doctor is advocating a good medicine by trying the sulfasalazine for her inflammation. Just keep in mind, than when treating the yeast, it will get worse as it gets better. If you don't want to try the sulfasalazine, you might investigate using bromelain - a pineapple core extract that can be used as a digestive enzyme when taken with food/protein, or as an anti-inflammatory when taken away from food (1 hour before eating, or 2 hours after). Because she is so young, this might not be a good option for her, though. There is some research that shows it isn't necessary, and might even worsen the yeast, to reduce fruits and other foods that yeast likes. Definitely limit them to keep from encouraging the yeast, but not to eliminate it completely. It has to do with encouraging the yeast to mutate into a more aggressive form. And yes, yeast can make the colitis worse because the toxins it produces irritates and damages the gut lining just like other pathogenic bacteria does. I think someone put several documents together on the main SCD Yahoo Group page regarding yeast. You might look at that.AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Fri, September 24, 2010 12:50:14 PMSubject: Please Advice -Medication decison for my daughter (UC) My daughter (3.5 yr) has been on SCD for 5 months now. Showed a big improvement with BM by 2nd week on SCD. Was well for 3 weeks, when suddenly her darrihea started. She didn't have this kind of Diarrhea prior to SCD. WE did some mistakes in the beginning. Should have added probiotics earlier. Did intro 3 times. did see some improvement but as soon as i add little more food (still all stage 1 or 2 food),start to see blood in the stool. Currently, her bowl frequency has gone up, started to see more blood, stools are not formed, maybe mushy or loose and sometimes watery darrihea. I have a strong feeling she has YEAST overgrowth, esp with very limited food that she can take. She has this white coating on her tongue, thrush. She had thrush issues when she was baby - 2 months old and was on Nystain. Our GI doctor wants to put her on medicine (Sulfasalazine) based on her blood in the stool and every now and then watery darrihea. I am having a hard time deciding wheather to start on the medicine. I am pleading to you all if anyone has gone thru this, could you please advice what to do. Some of my concerns are: Can sulfasalazine worsen the yeast issues.?? I am reading about sulfasalzine- Is this antibiotic.?? I can't find an exact answer on this. If this is antibiotics, i am thinking all my hard work on SCd will be a waste in terms of yogurt and probiotics that we have been giving to her. If yeast overgrowth, and having colitis, can yeast cause bleeding and make the colitis worse. Maybe then I should concentrate getting yeast under control. Again this is hard, because she is not able to tolerate a lot of food. Zucchin, butternut, banana, carrot, are some of her main food that she is able to tolerate but then they are also liked by yeast. That makes it hard to control yeast with food. I really wanted to do SCd for her without medicine, as I know this diet did work for her when we started. Anyone out there think if its possible to get her better without medicine, please give me suggestions. If I decide to go with the medicine, what precautions should i be taking. Or any recommendation for another medicine based on your experience Greatly appreciate your advice Please help me. Thank you Rani
Guest guest
Rani, I have thankfully done well on sulfasalazine. It is an antiinflammory with weak antibacteria properties. Elaine actually thought it was a good medication. It can change the color of urine and stools to a bit orange, but it is generally well tolerated. One has to take folic acid with it. My only question with a 3 year old is that the tablets are big, so you will have to ask about getting them into her- don't know if it comes in a liquid, but you will probably have to crush them up in something for her to take them. Guest guest
Rani, I was diagnosed as " mild UC " and as far as I know, I have not had a problem with yeast. I tend to avoid carbs because, at age 54, I don't want to put on too much weight. PJ > > > > My daughter (3.5 yr) has been on SCD for 5 months now.
