Guest guest
I made a tzatziki dip which is kind of along the lines of what you're describing.1 cup dripped yogurt 1/2 cup grated cucumber, water squeezed out2-4 cloves garlic, minced1 tbsp olive oil2 tsp lemon juiceI have done it without the cucumber and it was still good. So I can imagine having just yogurt + lemon juice would be decent too. Even with just 2 tsp of lemon juice it is very flavorful, so if you need an even stronger lemon taste, just make sure to start with dripped yogurt so when you add more lemon it doesn't get too runny. I don't know about using oils though. Kathttp://scdkat.com
Guest guest
Hi, This was such an intriguing idea, adding essential oils to yogurt to flavor it, that I just mixed myself up some freshly made yogurt with a couple of drops of lemon essential oil. It tastes good, but I think it would be better with a little honey (which I'm not currently using owing to my yeast issues). I've gotten into essential oils over the past six months, and I purchase mine through Mountain Rose Herbs and Ananda Apothecary. They're both great. The essential oils you mention, lemon and lime, are both reasonably inexpensive. I know that it's always posted on the bottles and sometimes the websites, " Not for internal use, " but I think that is more a legal disclaimer than anything else. You should research any essential oil before you use it internally with a trusted source, particularly because there is a lot of stuff that passes for information on the web that is actually someone's opinion and nothing more. And some of they are powerful things, and some should not be used internally (and some not even externally). The Anada site posts whether an essential oil is GRAS, Generally Regarded as Safe, although I don't know if they mention for internal use. I've gotten into cooking with lemon (wonderful when roasting asparagus), oregano, thyme and rosemary essential oils, and it adds a huge amount of flavor to the foods. They key is to not add to much...usually a drop of two will do you. I got the idea from Ann Worwood's book, The Complete Book of Essential Oils. She's got a whole section on it, with a bunch of recipes. Ellen > > i was interested in trying this, but not sure how much to add to the yogurt .... and also if it would work or just taste weird. i'm looking for a lemon custard and/or key lime pie flavored yogurt. > > i found several sites that sell the oils, but some of them state 'not to be used internally'. if anyone could recommend an affordable site that has an oil for baking/cooking that they've used i would appreciate it. >

She's got a whole section on it, with a bunch of recipes. I would ask people to be VERY VERY VERY careful with this idea of using essential oils. Unless they are certified for internal consumption, DO NOT USE THEM! Things like pure lemon oil or pure orange oil intended for internal consumption may be OK. You have to be careful with things like oil of oregano because it can be a potent anti-fungal, and you could make yourself derned all sick with die off. Essential oils are VERY strong. Even if something is listed as GRAS, Generally Recognized As Safe, you have to know that it's safe for internal consumption, not just safe for, say, topical use. For instance, oil of pennyroyal can be great externally. Internally it can cause bleeding and can end a pregnancy. But some people think it's sdafe because it smells minty. It's a different family from the mints we can make our tea from, but some people think it smells similar. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

Guest guest
CHEESE CHIPS!!! My name is Joanna and I am a professed tortilla chip junkie. Or at least I *WAS* until I started SCD and couldn't eat them anymore! You've got to try cheese chips (that is, if you are eating dairy?). You can mound shredded cheese or put small squares of sliced cheese on parchment paper and bake in oven at 350 for about 18-20 minutes (watch to see when it is bubbling and golden brown- all cheeses and ovens are slightly different). I make as many as I can stand and just freeze the extras. They are perfect for dips or just on their own when you need a crunch! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 20mg prednisone > > When you make these delicious DIPS ... what do you dip in them?? I just always > went for chips... so I am terrified to make a dip and start craving my long lost > chips...LOL > 41 > UC sept. 09 > SCD July

Refrig for a while to blend the flavors. You can also shred parmesan cheese into little piles and bake those. They actually sell those at stores (usually w/other crap in them though) They are really good. Whenever I make cheese crackers I usually add some herbs - italian, rosemary, or anything you'd like.
