Guest guest
Hi Everyone Just a update on my son he will be 15 in a couple weeks I posted a few weeks ago [mamas Going Crazy] We met with surgeon last week My son has an underbite class three The surgeon DR Rothman did not sugar coat anything he had broke his jaw when he was younger. He said there could be permanent numbness and the hardwear sometimes had to be removed he had to have his removed. He told me some people would come in with a minor underbite or overbite and he would not do the surgery on them. He said if Jake was his son he would have the surgery done He also said he would not do the surgery until my son is at least 17 he asked what size shoe was Jake in size 13 he thinks he has a lot more growing to do [Please not the foot LOL ] He is already 5ft 10in. I told DR if we decided to go thru the surgery i wanted to have it scheduled during summer so Jake would not miss too much School he is in all advanced classes and I didn't want him to wear braces any longer than he had too. But that is up too the orthodonist. Dr Rothman told me he would rather him be ready for the surgery than it be time for the surgery and Jake's teeth not be ready. Because of Jake's age Dr does not know yet if he will have to have top and bottom jaw done he also said he could not tell me if he would be wired or not just seemed to me he was trying to prepare me for the worst that could happen he said surgery would be about 5 hours if he had to do both jaws. I asked could he knock me out too LOL he said he would takes care of my son someone else would have to take care of me. I asked dr Rothman should i let my son know what i have found out thru a lot of you guys he said be honest with my son he was the one that had to go thru the surgery he told my son he would have hard times the liquid diet and the swelling to show him the before and after pictues on this site just nothing bad like a video or anything that would show the surgery. Tommorow Jake is scheduled to have his wisdom teeth removed with DR Rothman I don't know if i will get a chance to ask any more Questions about the surgery.I am still very nervous i really like the Orthodonist and so far the ortho surgeon I even called our Dentist to see if he knew DR Rothman he didn't so he called the ortho that he sent us too and talked to him Dentist called me back and told me that surgeon was highly recommended that he did all of Orthodontists surgerys our dentist said he really thought Jake was in good hands. I still am nervous and know if the braces go on there is no turning back. Does anyone have any suggestions on any questions i should ask if i get a chance tomorrow? Sorry so long maybe I should have made 2 posts Thanks Teressa
Guest guest
Hi Tressa, I had my surgery May this year I had known that I needed the surgery for a number of years. But it wasn't until 2003 that my journey through orthognathic surgery began. I met my surgeon many times before the surgery. I had my braces put on June 2004 and was told that it would be another 18-24 months before I would have surgery, March 05 I was told that I was ready for surgery and surgery was scheduled for May. I was born with a cleft lip and palate and as a result my upper jaw stopped growing and my nose was very small and flat. It wasn't until the day before surgery that we all agreed on which option was best. Though the option we took was a lot more complicated and a lot longer in surgery. The months/weeks running up to the surgery I was very nervous and also exited after all I was going to look so different after the surgery. My surgeon and his team went through the surgery on detail and reassured me many times that I would be ok. That helped a lot and going into hospital the day before surgery i was looking forwards to getting the surgery over with. I saw my surgeon the day before surgery and I asked the last minute question I had, my mum on the other hand asked a ton of questions. The surgeon answered them all and that helped ease her mind a little. The morning of my surgery despite having a restless night I was feeling good, when my mum came to the hospital I could tell that she had been crying. We talked and laughed until it was time to go, my mum was allowed to come with my until I was alseep. She was a lot more nervous and scared than I was, but it was her that was left pacing the hospital floors all through surgery, her that would be aware of everything going on while I was sleeping. --------------------------------- Yahoo! Guest guest
Hi, I'm 20 years old. I had my surgery two weeks ago. I had a underbite and an underdeveloped top jaw. I definitely reccomend that your son have the surgery. I warn you though, it sucks. The first week of recovery is hell. Once you get through that, everyday gets better and better. I think the worst part of the experience is the liquid diet. I have to do it for 6 weeks. In the long run, 6 weeks is nothing. My mom was really nervous about my surgery, too. My aunts came and sat with her in the hospital during the surgery and she said that it helped to have them around to distract her a little. Hang in there. It's worth it in the end. I hope everything goes well for you. Good luck. . > > Hi Tressa, > > I had my surgery May this year I had known that I needed the surgery for a number of years.
