Guest guest
I think you TOTALLY need a second opinion. Your doc sounds like he/she doesn't know what they are talking about to be honest. The reason you have pain is bc of your misaligned jaws, and one of the main reasons that people have Orthognathic Surgery is bc of pain due to misaligned jaws. tweetabud117 wrote:I have an open bite and malialignment and have been wanting to get corrective surgery for a long time. My Dr. has been searching for some other reason for my chronic pain, like soft tissue damage, a major joint deformity, etc. I'm wondering if anyone out there has experienced pain from a similar condition to mine? I believe that the pressure my right side puts on my left jaw joint by trying to continue to close even though only my rear-most molars touch when I bite down, is the cause of my pain...I mean, if I bite really hard I can get my jaw to " bend " and get more teeth to touch, which REALLY hurts! Also, he wants to do orthoscopic surgery on both sides of my jaw to look for the so-called mysterious cause of my pain. Has anyone had an orthoscopic/exploratory jaw surgery? Did it help? And for those who have had surgical correction for a problem similar to mine, did it relieve chronic pain? I was told that chances were that it would make my pain worse. I would greatly appreciate any response! Thanks for taking the time to read my long-winded message! -
Guest guest
, I'm sorry to hear of your jaw pain. I am pre-op, so can't offer a lot of advice. Did you wear any dental appliances, such as those used for night-time grinding? Hope you find the answers you're looking for very soon. Guest guest
Hi Tweetabud117, I completely agree that a second and perhaps even third consult would be warrented. For this kind of pain and before surgical treatment is initiated, I would want to know what other professional opinions are. For any surgery, but particularly for one that is causing that kind of pain. Good luck, and let us know what you find out! Guest guest
Hi ! I have almost exactly the same problem... The good news is, it is getting better... Do you have a splint? Are you wearing braces? My x-rays showed that much of the cartilage in my left jaw was gone. I now have arthritis which is helped by taking glucosamine and chondroitin. If your doctor suggests any type of muscle relaxers, or any other of these approaches, try to stay away as these mask the pain and may cause muscle contractions which exacerbate the pain. I am wearing braces and will be undergoing surgery... I have tried to stay away from it for years now and am at a point where I am really looking forward to it.. > > I have an open bite and malialignment and have been wanting to get > corrective surgery for a long time. Guest guest
I'm from Oregon too! What surgeon are you seeing? Mine is like the top guy in the state and isn't the nicest to me! I'm probably going to have to go out of state because he's trained like everyone in OR! I had 3 yrs of braces, reverse head gear, multiple retainers, removable and permanent, and so on. I've never had problems with grinding though...I really can't because only my very last molars on my left touch when I bite. I have a good 1/2 centimeter separation on the other side that progressively gets smaller as you look to the left. Do you also have a malaligned jaw? It's nice to know I'm not the only one out there with problems like mine, because my Dr.s sure made me feel like I was! Thanks, > > , > > > > I'm sorry to hear of your jaw pain. Guest guest
, Where in Oregon are you? I'm in Salem. Say, the Beavers and the Ducks did a great job this weekend! I really would like a good OS close by, but my OD says the best in the Northwest is Dr. Roger West in Seattle. Fran and Beth on this board also are seeing Dr. West. Luna, from Montana, had her lower jaw operated in July. Someone was looking at these boards a couple of months ago and noted I was seeing Dr. West. He emailed me to say Dr. West did his jaw surgery 15 years ago and was very pleased with the results. He said even back then, people were coming from all over the world to see him. He is very nice, patient and knowledgeable. I'm very comfortable with him. My insurance approved my surgery, but won't pay much because I'm going out of network with my OS. This is the only reason I tried finding another OS a couple of months ago. I scheduled an appointment with someone in Portland, but when my OD heard about this he said I really need to be seeing someone with more experience and who is a specialist in the field. I cancelled that appointment. I'm getting my surgical wires on Oct. 25, pre-op on Oct. 26 and my surgery Nov. 17. I will know the first of Nov. if I need the upper jaw, or just lower. I have had an open bite for a little over a year as a result of wearing a nighttime device to help alleviate my morning headaches. I regret ever using this device as my headaches were never bad at all. I've now found a couple more people who are in the same situation I am. This is why I asked if you wore a mouth guard. When are you having your surgery? If you're not happy with your OS, I would definitely visit Dr. West. It is a long distance, but I think you would be very happy with him. If this is something you would like to pursue, you can search on the support site for his name. I have given it to another member. If you can't find it, please let me know. Please keep in touch. Guest guest
- Hello, you are definitely not alone; we each have our own interesting jaw problems! I have an underbite, and have been in braces for just ten weeks. I will be having a BSSO for mandibular set-back and a LeFort 1-piece to advance my maxilla and drop it down in front. I have had my underbite for nearly four decades and have had three work-ups in the past twenty-five years, but I wasn't ready to undergo all this until now. You've mentioned that your surgeon isn't very nice to you, and that you will probably need to go out-of- state. Well, My OMS is the sweetest, nicest, most compassionate and understanding doctor I have ever met, and I've known LOTS of doctors! (I've worked at a large hospital here in Boise, Idaho for 25+ years.) My OMS is Dr. , MD, DDS. Here's his address and phone #: 403 S. 11th Street - Suite 300, Boise, ID 83702 /(208)344-9115 / Fax # - (208)344-9113. His website address is: www.michaelbaileymd.com . He is not only a board-certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, but is also a board-certified Cosmetic Surgeon. He has surgical privileges at three large hospitals and at a small short-term hospital here, which charges one-fourth to one- third of what my employer charges for the exact same procedures [my hosp. charges $10K for a BSSO, this other hosp. charges $2.5K]. I trust him completely and I know he will take excellent care of me. If you plan to go out of OR, why not come to ID? Just a thought. Take care! ~~~~~~ Diane (Idaho) > > > > , > > > > > > > > I'm sorry to hear of your jaw pain.
