Guest guest
I didn't hear that, but I have a friend who is convinced, utterly convinced, that since the guvment hasn't been checking for mad cow, that there's been more to get through, and that some of the alzheimers is actually a lighter form of whatever form we can get from eating bad beef. Not that I believe it, but it's his theory. That would be enough to make a person want to focus on protein drinks <LOL>. (My response was to order grass-fed organic beef <G>) Pam in Niceville depression & Alzheimer's Heard a blurb on the news last night something about a relationship between depression and Alzheimer's. I didn't get the whole story (if there was one), but did anyone else hear that? in NJ *************************** > > > Poor baby. That is so true and so sad. Guest guest
My husband's grandparents on his father's side both had Alzheimer's Disease, as did his aunt (his father's sister). My father in-law has never been diagnosed, however, we have all felt that he suffers from manic depression and recently the early onset of Alzehimer's too. Hhowever, I recall a few years ago reading an article how they've associated Alzheimer's with high doses of aluminum in people's systems. What the theory behind this was that 30,40,50 or more years ago, all the pots that our parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on cooked with were alumininum and that with each use, traces of aluminum would wind up in the food that they/we were eating and with the gradual build up, may be one of the causes of Alzheimer's. Any concrete proof? I don't know, but have to say I got rid of all our aluminum pots and pans and use stainless steel now. Thought this might be of interest to some of you. Here's something from the Alzheimer's Association web site: " 4. Myth: Drinking out of aluminum cans or cooking in aluminum pots and pans can lead to Alzheimer's disease. Reality: Based on current research, getting rid of aluminum cans, pots, and pans will not protect you from Alzheimer's disease. The exact role (if any) of aluminum in Alzheimer's disease is still being researched and debated. However, most researchers believe that not enough evidence exists to consider aluminum a risk factor for Alzheimer's or a cause of dementia. " Depression is certainly common in the disease, both for the patient and the caregiver, and medications to treat depression are often used. The Alzheimer's Association can provide education and support to families dealing with this awful disease. Celia

After reading your post, I did a search for " Alzheimer's aluminum " on Yahoo. Found the following link, which is very interesting, linking Alzheimer's to our use of phosphate fertilizers *as well as* aluminum and fluoridated water. No study cites are given, so take it for what it may be worth... http://www.commondreams.org/views02/0819-06.htm Another site does list cites and concludes that there is a strong preponderance of evidence that aluminum (including that used in antiperspirants) is at the root of the epidemic of Alzheimer's. According to this, and other sites, absorption of aluminum through the digestive tract is minimal, though. It seems that other sources of aluminum are more suspect. http://www.healthwell.com/hnbreakthroughs/mar98/aluminum.cfm I'm sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of other, equally interesting, sites. These are two of the first few that came up. All agree that there is no universally accepted scientifically proven link, and aluminum cans and aluminum cookware (except for highly acidic foods) is probably pretty safe. The sources of most of our aluminum exposure are beyond our ability to control. --- 365/194/160 Lap RnY, Distal - Dr. s Vanderbilt University Hospital Surgery date June 3, 2002

I heard the same exact thing, and the part of the buzz regarding aluminum I remember is the aluminum-whatever that used to be the main ingredient in underarm deodorants. I have also heard that Alzheimer's is associated with those who are very intelligent, that the highly intelligent are more prone to developing it... I think I tend to agree with the aluminum theory a whole lot more!
