Guest guest
Now, you all know that I am not a protein shake fan. You can't be a fan of something you've never tried. But, recently (Christmas Eve) I made a purchase from one of those TV infomercials (HORRORS!). I bought an Ultimate Chopper, and got the blender attachment as well. I LOVE IT. And here is what I have been doing, once a day: 1 cup unsweetened plain low fat yogurt. 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup unsweetened orange juice and 1/2 cup unsweetened frozen fruit (peach slices, cherries, raspberries, etc) NO SUGAR ADDED. It's like a fruit shake, or frozen yogurt, after I stick it in the freezer. I don't know how healthy it is, but my pea brain tells me it is. I don't know how many calories it is. I don't care. It can't be outrageous. I'm not putting any sugar or substitute in, and buying frozen fruit with no sugar added. It makes about 2-3 servings for me. When I think I need something sweet, this does the trick. But I don't want sweet all that much. I have to admit, my eating habits have not been stellar since Fred has been gone (Sept), but I try to stay away from carbs in excess, but you can eat only so much chicken with broccoli in the side before you go, " BLEHHHHHH!!!! " Cooking for one is a pain in the patootie. Fast foods don't do it. I'm not a fast food fan, anyway. Don't do hamburgers or pizza. Don't like canned soup. Don't like much of anything right now. Sharp cheddar and triscuits crackers are losing their appeal. I've never been an egg fan, particularly, but I've been eating them once a day, with diced low fat ham and cheese in them. It's wearing off. Someone tell me how to cook for one. I just don't know how. I've been trying to eat, and eat healthy, but I feel like I'm starving to death. I'm not. I haven't lost a single pound lately. But nothing tastes good, I'm hungry all the time, and I feel like I'm just going thru the motions, except for my yogurt concoctions, and my pickles. Guest guest
Jac, I KNOW how you feel about finding food that appeals. I get bored very easily and since I eat so little I want food that has some real flavor and satisfaction. This week I made the Heroin Wings (Dana Carpenter's Low Carbs Cookbook) and they are fantastic! Three wings are a meal for me and so tasty and satisfying. Also made CarbSense's Corn Muffins . . . 1 muffin is 2g carbs and so delicious warmed and topped with butter! YUM! Also rediscovered Uncle Sam Cereal. The carbs are higher (28g net per cup) but it is a nice change of pace and packs 10g fiber. Add a slpash of Soy Slender and I've got a fantastic and filling meal! When NOTHING appeals I just resort to cheese and a couple wheat thins, a scrambled egg, a meat and cheese roll-up or a salad. It's strange (but nice) that food doesn't have that appeal and impact it used to. Rev. Pam Open RNY 12/11/02 318.5/180.5 RE: I'm hungry > Now, you all know that I am not a protein shake fan. Guest guest
Hi Jac, Boy, I know where you are coming from . . . . except I've got a little more time experience cooking for one . . . but then again I'm only 17 or so months post op, so I don't know that I can count my old pre WLS days as cooking for one . . . if you get my jist! LOL I cook one or two days a week and eat what I make for most of the week. Today I cooked beef stroganoff. 2 small tenderloin steaks, chopped up and cooked with garlic and minced onion, brown it and then put in a can of cream of mushroom soup and let it simmer for about an hour. Just before you are ready to eat add cream cheese or sour cream to the stroganoff mixture. Once you add that turn off the heat. At some point cook up a spaghetti squash and put the stroganoff over the spaghetti squash. (If you are real ambitious, you can add bamboo shoots and mushrooms in addition to the regular stuff). I use spaghetti squash as a base for most anything, I'll do a ricotta cheese mixture (ricotta + parmesan cheese + an egg + spag sauce) spread over a layer of spaghetti squash, then a layer of spaghetti sauce, then cheese and cook it for a little while. This is really yummy, pouchie has never yucked it back up. Get the low carb tortilla's and try this, melt a piece of string cheese on one, then add cut up tomato and avocado, sprinkle with italian dressing and it's a real yummy lunch. Use the low carb tortillas to make a ham sandwich too, that's not too bad. If you want more thoughts, just let me know. I get in a rut from time to time and can't think of anything that I want to eat, nothing sounds good. Hope this helps some! Guest guest
I appreciate all the suggestions. Boy, do I! But, I'm almost 22 years post op. I thought I had all of this figured out. NOT. I know I don't want pot roast for a week. I don't eat that much meat in a month. Maybe I'm just sick of me, as much as food, right now. Guest guest
Those low Carb tortilla's are WONDERFUL! A little mustard...some turkey and some pepper jack cheese...in the microwave....roll up....nuke a little more (I like my cheese melted) and OH WOW OH WOW! Very yummy! Also, the tuna in the packages now comes with a smoked version...add onions, and mayo, mix in some sharp shredded cheddar...and then some pepper jack cheese....roll and nuke (I usually wrap them in paper towel to keep things from drying out). BOY don't even get me started with these tortilla's. Scrambled eggs...with onion and bell peppers, cheddar cheese...pepper jack cheese...roll and nuke. Hummmm I am seeing a pattern here...Something about pepper jack cheese? Guest guest
Again, I can't say I don't like protein drinks. I can't not like something I've never tried. The thought doesn't appeal to me, but that doesn't mean anything. I'm not a milkshake fan either. I've been lactose intolerant for over 20 years, and am just, in the last 6 months, not. It doesn't mean I eat a lot of ice cream. I don't even have any in my freezer, and haven't since Fred left, 4 months ago. I like my yogurt/banana/fruit blend, but I only eat about 4 ounces a day, at most. Usually less. I know my whole problem is depression, and the meds aren't fixing it. They aren't bringing Fred home one day sooner, and I don't like trying to cook for one. I don't want a weeks worth of chicken or pot roast. I have head hunger, but not stomach hunger. I'm not CRAVING pickles. There is nothing wrong with my liver, but I am stressed I eat pickles, because they keep me from eating bad things. I guess I'm just whining. Plain and simple. I'm just whining. Guest guest
Here's a big hug for you ((((((((((((((((((((((((jac))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Sometimes, this all just sucks----I've been depressed too and using chocolate as a crutch--I've gained 7 pounds. Eat your pickles and don't worry about it----if you need them (whether your liver does or not) or not, at least it's something that gives you satisfaction---and there are certainly MUCH worse things you could be eating. I am under SO much stress right now, that I keep looking to food for comfort, and the old things that used to work I can't really eat anymore. I'm not totally torn up about this----but it does leave me feeling quite lost. I'm really not sure what to do with myself---even though intellectually, I know many things I could be doing to avoid eating. Ah well, what you can do is to make a meal---freeze some of it and eat what you want---that way you have some for another time when you don't feel like cooking. I know it's a pain to cook for one---not that I have that problem, I have to cook for 7! But when it is one of those rare occasions that it is just me at home, I don't bother cooking---why go through all the work? BUT, you need to eat and you need to eat healthy. Try out allrecipes.com----there are SO many awesome recipes there and you can adjust them to any number of servings you need. That might be just the ticket to help you cook yourself good meals! Good luck! :-) (the one in Cleveland) I'm hungry > > > > Jacque, > > > > My acupuncturist said something about pickles that seemed very > > interesting to me... Guest guest
Unfortunately there are not... " many people who do very well without protein drinks " . During the first 18 months or so, your body may well still be working on the protein stores you had before surgery. You also may be breaking down your own muscles in order to get the protein that your body requires. Eventually, though, unless you are a very short proximal, it will catch up with you. It is even questionable if a very short proximal can get away with not supplementing with protein drinks, but I suppose it may be possible. Malabsorption is what we paid for. It's how we lost weight. To pretend it doesn't exist is just denial. You don't " like " protein shakes, so you don't want to believe that you may need them. Many people with high bloodpressure or diabetes think the same way, until they are in trouble for not taking their meds to control the condition. Denial only works for so long. Are you saying that you don't absorb vitamins and minerals, but you do absorb protein? This doesn't make much sense to me -- after all, protein must be broken down into the amino acids -- that's what the body is absorbing -- not big old protein blobs. I have another question about all of this -- if there isn't going to be any malabsorbtion (specifically of CALORIES) then why chose the RNY over a purely restrictive surgery (AGB or VBG)? Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting superiority of one over the other -- but rather, why get your digestive system " disarmed " only enough to jeopardize " micronutrient " absorption but NOT get the benefit of malabsorbing the fat and calories? Yes, I can see one benefit would be to get dumping as a deterrent to eating sugar but that seems to be almost a hit or miss proposition for post ops. I would be pretty ticked off if I after my surgery I had issues associated with malabsorbtion of nutrients, but still sucked every calorie out of the food I ate. Guest guest
it depends on the surgery the alvarado rny surgery by dr wittgrove is mal absorptive only to the extent it cuts into the intestine at the microlevel, not the food macro level. what this means is that that particluar surgery does malaborb at the micronutrient level, but not the macro level. each surgery is different, know your surgery. a great friend of mine also recommended getting a copy of your surgeon's medical file to keep at home in case of emergency. sound advice janice Re: I'm hungry Unfortunately there are not... Guest guest
I'm afraid you are going to have to explain that one to me. To cut and bypass part of the intestine, is to cut and bypass part of the intestine. You can't just cut through part of it. The part that is bypassed will never absorb food again because it will never see food again. If you no longer have the mechanics to properly digest protein, then how do you suppose you do it anyway? Digestion is done in the small intestine. Bypass a large part of the small intestine....well, isn't it logical that you won't digest in the same way? It amazes me how many people don't realize what they asked and paid for with gastric bypass surgery (RNY, in particular). If you had some different kind of gastric bypass surgery, I would appreciate your explaining it to me. Maybe yours would be a better surgery for me to advise for future patients. Guest guest
And what does that mean, in terms of real-time? You malabsorb nutrients, but not foods? Well, yes, I mean, the food goes through. But it's selected nutrients (based on our surgeries, and what has been bypassed) that we we malabsorb, therefore we supplement. Now, if you don't have an RNY, but have one of the banding surgeries, then it's a whole 'nother ballgame. I'll be 48 next month. I'm a retired inner city street cop, and I run a 20-horse farm, by myself. I challenge you to keep up with me, for even one day. My food issues right now are not nutrition related. They are depression related, and I know it. But, I resent the hell out of a newbie (less than 10 years) telling me that I am a nutritional failure. You don't know me. You don't know what I do or don't eat. What you DO know is only what I tell you. And I tell you this. I weighed 315 pounds when I had surgery in May, 1982. I weigh 145 now, and have for almost all of the last 22 years. And I can dead lift almost 200 pounds. I'm seriously thinking of getting off of this list, because I'm sick of people who are 18 months out telling me how I should be eating. I joined because I thought I could learn something. I have. I have learned that people are know it alls, regardless of what they weigh. That support is only a convenience when the person offering it thinks they have THE ANSWER. I guess I don't have anything to contribute, and comments like above, don't add a thing to my lifestyle. Guest guest
it means that rny patients done by wittgrove at alvarado still get most--but not all -- of their protein thru food does this mean you should not do shakes? no of course not shakes still can give you essential amino acids in a form more easily digestible by your body this is important for each human being to a greater or lesser extent it can also be an important hunger control, craving control tool as well for some, it can even keep the sweet tooth satisfied calorie for calorie protein packs more nutrients and hunger satisfaction than any other form but for some, it is too much like the liquid " diet " which they previously failed at or which does not help them ultimately to develop a healthy relationship with " real " food--whatever that is it is important to remember that each person and each surgery is different each amount of absorption is different each amount of non absorption is different everyone has to take in all the info on this board, and from all sources, like a sponge and then experiment and learn to do what works for them. it may end up being the same hard lessons learned and shared by others here or it may end up being a different experience i personally am finding protein drinks to be a useful tool in my maintenance regime. i am glad i learned it, among other things, from this board i am happy to include it in my bag of tricks or weight maintenance/health maintenance strategies but i also recognize that others may adopt other strategies which work for them i would never want anyone on this board to ever feel as though they must be pro-protein drinks or that they cannot voice a different perspective. i guess my point is : as we have learned from our own life experience, there is never " one size fits all? " janice RE: I'm hungry And what does that mean, in terms of real-time? You malabsorb nutrients, but not foods? Well, yes, I mean, the food goes through. Guest guest
If I remember correctly, you were recently revised to an RNY. So, do you think that.....just possibly....now that you have a malabsorptive surgery(I don't know what you had before), that just maybe you may need protein supplementation now, even if you had some other type of surgery for the past 20 some years? It is only the malabsorptive type surgeries that need the extra protein supplementation. And very short proximals may or may not be able to eat enough food protein to get by. Lapbands don't need it either, as they have no malabsorption. I understand depression, and hope you can find a way to pull out of it quickly. I know what it feels like to be in that pit and not know how to get out. Just consider......maybe there is a connection between obesity/weight loss/nutrition/gastric bypass and depression. What we eat or don't eat changes our levels of neurotransmitters as do hormones and many other things. The lack of sunshine can also effect us at this time of year, as can any stressful situation. Whatever the reasoning, there definitely seems to be a correlation between gastric bypass patients and depression......so, maybe, just maybe.......nutrition might be a part of that too. Just consider it. No one " has " to do anything. If you don't want protein shakes, don't drink them. But from talking to thousands of gastric bypass patients on numerous lists and locally, I have found protein supplementation to be important for anyone with a malabsorptive procedure to remain healthy. Please......also consider...how many 10-20 yr RNY postops do you hear of? Where did they go? Almost every one that I have heard of that had a weight loss surgery from way back then, has had major complications or has gained all their weight back. I'm thrilled that you haven't. Besides, the surgery done 10-20 yrs ago was not the same surgery that is being done now. Many of the surgeries done that long ago caused cirrhosis and other problems. The docs didn't know that would happen until people experienced it. Docs didn't know about protein supplementation until recently either. Some still don't agree with it. But, just look at the people who do and do not supplement(those with malabsorptive surgeries). Look at them over time, 1-2 yrs or more. I'm not telling you you " have " to drink protein shakes. You can do anything you want. Just think about it. And I really do hope you are feeling better soon. Chrissie RE: I'm hungry <<Unfortunately there are not... Re: I'm hungry Unfortunately there are not... Guest guest
Actually, it's not just that I don't " like " protein drinks, I am not able to get them down, I always throw them up. My surgeon and the nutritionist both told me that it IS possible to stay healthy without having to supplement with protein drinks, I think I'll stick to his assessment---it has nothing to do with denial. :-) (the one in Cleveland) I'm hungry > > > > Jacque, > > > > My acupuncturist said something about pickles that seemed very > > interesting to me... I've been pretty successful, and knock on wood, will be four years post op in a couple of months and I got to goal weight and have stayed there. I hear over and over that I am one of the " few " success stories. I have often wondered, and in fact, believe more and more as time goes by, if the fact that I use protein supplements has anything to do with this. No, I don't malabsorb any of the food protein sources I eat -- and I AM able to eat meat pretty well compared to many people post op -- but I believe that for very few people is it possible to get " enough " real food to satisfy their physical needs. I lead a support group that includes several VBG postops as well as RNYers. I tout the virtues of protein shakes pretty regularly and what I see over and over again, is when people stop the routine of using protein shakes things fall apart. Perhaps this is not the cause -- perhaps the protein shakes stop as part of a downward spiral that begins of its own accord -- this may not be a causal relationship, but there does seem to be a correlation. I'm not sure WHY things have worked so well for me up to this point (don't get me wrong.. this has been FAR from " easy " ) but I'm pretty convinced that the fact that I have supplemented (protein and vitamins) " as if " I were a short proximal RNY has played a big role in it. So, my take on this is, no -- purely restrictive surgeries do not NEED protein shakes -- but they just MIGHT have a higher chance of succeeding if they use them. Also, I think that you should keep doing what works if it is, in fact, working -- that is, if you are collecting the right data to make that assessment -- but you should be prepared to refine what you are doing if stops working. And from what I've seen on the list, things do change for a lot of people.
