Guest guest
We found a new cookbook at the Sunnyvale Library today: >>The Best Ever Wheat and Gluten-Free Baking Book<< by Ann Wenniger, 2005. For us do-it-yourselfers, this is a well-explained and pretty complete book. The book is also quite systematic and doesn't jump from recipe to recipe or technique to technique. Everything is in sections, and the use of ingredients are well explained. Some might say the book is overly scientific, but that is not the case. We haven't tried the recipes yet, but they are varied - way more than the average recipe book. The author has more than 20 years experience with her celiac mate. The book looked so good that I ordered it. Overstock has a good price - just $11.94 with a $1.40 delivery charge. If you've been buying package mixes, you could be in for a pleasant surprise - more variety and lower cost. Piazza's Fine Foods at ton and Middlefield in Palo Alto (and Lakewood Shopping Center in San Mateo) carries a number of gluten- free and wheat-free foods. They have attempted to label the shelves with little signs. Generally the signs are correct, but not always. Check your ingredients. So far the chicken-apple sausages in the meat market seem ok - I read the ingredients on the spice pack they use in the mix. And when you are in Santa Barbara, go to Lazy Acres on the Mesa. It is the store that Whole Foods Market would like to be.
