Hi Everyone,

I haven't posted in a awhile. Been dealing with a lot of issues with my son

Jordan - 5 yrs RSS - behavioral problems in school. Will talk about that in

another post. Just yesterday I smelled under Jordan's arms and it was

definitely body odor. Now he was very active yesterday - running, jumping, and

sweaty. Also we did not bathe him the night before and we all woke up late

yesterday

morning. My husband gave him a quickie shower/wipe down. Could the odor be

related to the fact that he wasn't properly bathed or is the a sign of

possible early puberty (adrenarche). This is the first time his underarms

smelled

like that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

My son is 5 1/2 and has had body odor for two years. His endo and also

Dr. H. have no idea why. His blood tests are fine.

I would get this checked out to make sure it's not adrenarche though.

My daughter Alyssa started displaying underarm odor about 2 yrs ago (she was

2). Now at 4 her bone age has advanced 3yrs past her chronological age and

her blood tests clearly indicated Adrenarche. Underarm odor is one of the

first outward signs of adrenarche and I got Alyssa immediately checked out.

Dr. H has been monitoring her hormone levels and bone age carefully since I

first noticed the odor. She is now on Arimidex to stop the advancing bone

age.

This is something Dr. H likes to monitor carefully. Adrenarche begins

conversion of hormones which causes the bones to advance. This is not good

for our kids! We want to delay the bone age to buy extra growing time. If

you do not already have an appt. scheduled with an endo I would make one.

With the appearance of signs of adrenarche at the very least they should

check Jordan's bone age. If it has advanced past his chronological age,

they should check his hormones. Anyway this is what Dr. H does! :-)

Don't panic, as Dr. H just told me a month ago " it's not the greatest news,

but we can fix this " .

my son has that also, but all the other signs are not there and out dr told us

not to worry about it with the bone age tests being ok. we buy a natural

deodarant to help with the smell and he likes copying his daddy inthe morning

when he gets ready for school by putting his own deopdarant on!!!!!

Hi Cindy,

Thanks for your help. We actually had an appt. with Dr. H today and we told

her about the odor. She just mentioned that she noticed it and my son had

bloodwork done today. So we'll see.

Hi Dayna,

Thanks for the information. Actually we had an appt with Dr. H today and she

did some bloodwork on Jordan. He had a bone age done back in Nov when he was

4yrs 11 months and according to the radiologist report, the bone age was 4yrs

6 months so it's pretty close to his actual age. How is the Arimidex given?

Is it a med taken by mouth?

Hi Dayna,

As far as I know, Dr. H did not read the bone age. Jordan's previous bone

ages were no where near his chronological age. That's why I am a bit worried.

What if any are the side effects of the Arimidex?

Thanks

That's great! You are in good hands. Did Dr. H read the report as well??

I know whenever we have the bone ages done she likes to read them as well.

Undoubtedly when our local radiologist gives us a range, Dr. H plots it at

the high end. This last time our radiologist plotted it at 5yrs 2m and Dr.

H did it at 6yr9mo. She was 4yr 1 mo at the time of the x-ray. Was his

bone age farther delayed previously?? Dr. H will take a look at his blood

work and be able to tell what's going on. Alyssa started Arimidex 18mo

after the odor first started.

Arimidex is a VERY small pill taken orally. I was very concerned Alyssa

would not be able to swallow it with her VERY sensitive gag reflex, but

Katy's son showed her how he does it (his appt was the same day as

ours) and she has NEVER had any trouble! Unbelievable!!

We have not seen any side effects. You can go to

http://www.astrazeneca-us.com/pi/arimidex.pdf to see a full listing by the

maker of the drug. If his bone age is starting to advance faster than his

chronological age, you will want to keep on top of it. Obviously if you are

seeing Dr. H you are in good hands! She waited until Alyssa's blood tests

and bone ages confirmed adrenarche and then prescribed the Arimidex. As I

said before that was about 18mo-2yrs from the first sniff of body odor.

If you are a member of MAGIC they have MANY articles regarding adrenarche

that might be helpful. You can email pam@... and ask for

the RSS Library Listing, then email her with the articles you would like and

she will mail them right out to you for FREE! Dr. H is also going to speak

at the convention this year on Aromatase Inhibitors and Adrenarche.
