is it a docband?  Not sure on othres as they have a wean on period and are slightly bulkier/heavier.  But for the docband we did nothing, my sensitive skin, hates hats, just getting used to th ecar and only an OK sleeper to begin with did absolutely fine.  They put it on, he immediately reached for it and we distracted him with a toy, a minute later he pulled at it but again was distracted by a toy but never went back to it after that which I found so interesting since he will persist for 30 mins to get a hat off.  after that he also never even paid much attn when we took it off to wipe the sweat (he received his on th ehottest day of the year in august in southern nc) or when they took it off to check it 2 hrs later.  he did take a little longer to fall asleeo in the van on the way home but still fell asleep shortly after hitting the interstate (and he is a car fusser to begin with so cant say the helmet was the reason why he took a few minutes) but at home he slept fine and the rest of the car trips.  within days if he saw it he tried to put it back on.  the bigger adjustment was for me, remembering we couldnt necesarily spend the entire day at the beach b/c I had to be careful abuot the sand and didnt want it off too long.  or me finding a position that was comfy for me to nurse him (he wasnt bothered by any position), etc  and actually, after graduating he turned into a hat lover lol

what I did instead to prepare was buy some mod podge, stickers, paint, found the 91% alcohol instead of the 70% and bought some of the suave kids shampoo (which we only used once a week b/c of his sensitive skin, the rest of th etime we used his usual burts bees)

oh and oddly enough, even though he never bothered with his band, once he was standing age (he got his at 9 mo and walked at 10 mo) he did bother th eother boy in our playgroup who had the band too.  he would toddle over and pull on his, the other boy had had his band a good 9 mo already so was baffled by why my son would mess with it so would give him strange looks lol

You are not alone - we have all been there. We have all had the nerves before the band. Like everyone has said, most babies do so much better than we expect them to. My hated hats before her band, but now she loves them.

also adjusted very well to her band, with the exception of a few bumps over sleep. And, had been a colicky baby and she is very stubborn. In fact, she had screamed so much during all of her doctors and scanning visits that we were warned that we might have trouble with adjustment and should consider that (along with her advanced age of 14 months) when deciding to band. To everyone's surprise, she did great and even became very attached to it - not wanting it off during bath time and insisting upon wearing it out of the office on graduation day.

However, not all babies have done as well so if you do have trouble, be sure and post and maybe some of those moms can give you more specifics with what you are dealing with. More than likely, though, things will be fine. Good luck today.

Wow! Just so you all know - the transition has been AMAZING! I just knew it was going to be a struggle with Cameron b/c she was always pulling hats and barrettes off, etc. and can throw a royal fit if she is not happy with something.

She only tried to pull the helmet off at the office when we got it and we distracted her each time as recommended by the orthotist. It has been no big deal to her at all. In fact, at the end of the second day I was showing her helmet to a friend and she smiled and tried to take it and put it on!

She does get pretty sweaty but it doesn't seem to bother her and they say that subsides after a couple weeks. We are on day four wearing it up to 8 hours 2x today. She is even taking naps in it no problem so tonight I am going to let her sleep in it most of the night for her second 8 hour session! Whew - I am SO relieved! Thanks for all your helpful tips and support! The only thing I haven't done is ride in the car so I am going to try that in the next day - worried about the heat but I do have a van with a vent back there so that should help. One more month and she can forward face in her car seat which I think will also help.

Hi ,

We are getting a STAR band for my daughter next week. She is on B.F and am thinking of introducing solids the week after we get the band. Did you or your LO feel any thing uncomfortable b.feeding after getting helmet? Some times when my DD spits I see milk touching her hair when she is lying on her back. What do you do in that case? Do you take helmet off and clean it and put it back? Sorry for all the questions. I just want to get prepared myself.

Sammy
