Measuring their head?

My daughter has been wearing her DOC Band for 2 weeks now. I was excited to go

to her first appointment to find out how much her head had moved. Then when we

were there the PT told me that they will only measure her head at the first

appointment and at the last appointment. I was really bummed because I wanted to

know how much of an improvement she made so far. If your child has a DOC Band,

could you please tell me if this is how they do it at your clinic?

In Canada at our clinic we measure at every follow-up visit. We don't have

access to a scanner system which is what I believe Cranial Technologies uses to

produce their helmets so our measurements are all done using a caliper and tape

measure system. Its a very low tech system but functional.

We have 3 orthotists involved in our clinic and we all measure differently.

More importantly to obtain accurate measurements, our children are measured by

the same orthotist for every visit to reduce the risk of clinician measurement

error.

Measurements are very important in deciding what adjustments should be done to

the liner and at what time in the treatment process. We pass this information

along to our parents so that they have an understanding from our perspective as

orthotists as to why we are making the adjustments that we are to the helmets.

The other plus is that it is a great motivator for parents. If parents are able

to see how the correction is progressing then compliance is easier for them

knowing that there is a reasonable completion date in the immediate future.

As a parent I would want to know how they determine what adjustments are

necessary to the band if they don't measure every time at follow-up to see what

correction has occurred?

Perhaps other Doc Band parents will be able to help with your question.

Take care

I know the stretches are a major pain, but they are really important, and they

don't work unless you do them at least 5-6x a day. They get even harder if you

have a toddler and you're still doing them 6x a day because he still has

torticollis. They just get bigger and stronger! Trust me, do the stretches, no

matter how torturous!
