No wisdom from me yet. But my underbite is off by 6mm and I'll be wired

shut for 3 weeks + banded for 3 weeks. My surgery is Dec 7. I'm sure

I will let everyone know how I'm feeling during that 6 week period...

whether they want to know or not! :)

I'm sure someone will come along and enlighten us both.

Thanks Sue, I am glad to know there are others out there who are going through

something similar. When I tell people what I am doing, they think I am nuts.

Keep us posted.

- Welcome to this group! I, too, have an underbite - also known

as Mandibular Hyperplasia. Looks like you and I will be " surgery

buddies " , as my surgery will be sometime in May or June. I'm 47, BTW. I

will be having a BSSO (lower set back) and LeFort 1-piece (Lefort is

the upper surgery - I will be having my upper brought forward and down

in front). My OMS will be using a splint and bands; he doesn't wire

anyone shut. If he does only the lower, he will need to set back my jaw

7 mm. Do you have problems eating/chewing and talking? I do, and my jaw

hurts when I chew. At my last appointment with him, he was pretty

certain he would need to do both procedures. I trust him completely; he

is awesome! I feel this is the right time to do this surgery; I

could've done it years ago, but this time it feels so right. I feel

blessed to have my OMS and my OD taking care of me. Again, welcome to

the group. Ask any questions; hope we have the answers. And, Relax!! We

are all nervous - that's completely normal! ~~~ Diane (Idaho)

Diane, thanks for your email- I have been reading every ones posts and I am

amazed that there are so many of us out there. I do have problems eating,

especially biting into sandwiches or meat, I do have trouble with some words

when speaking, but I have just lived with it for so long I hardly notice it

anymore. I do get what I call " jaw aches " but nothing to terrible. I am 39 and

finally decided it is time to do something about this. When I was 22 I had

braces with the intention of getting the surgery, but my insurance would not

cover it so, I just thought I would live with this bite. Just recently I changed

to a new insurance that I thought would cover it and sure enough they did.

Which I am so thankful for. So, here I am in braces for the second time. It is

fun, I have 3 kids and they get such a kick out of me nibbling away and whining

because I can't have a carmel apple. Keep me posted on your progress. I am

wondering why you are having both upper and lower surgery and

why my doctor is only doing lower. Do you have any idea?

Hi there, - The reason why I am undergoing both lower and

upper surgeries is because I also have Maxillary Hypoplasia, which

is responsible for giving me a " midface deficit " ; basically, it

means that my maxilla didn't grow as far forward as it should have.

So my OMS will be advancing my upper forward and dropping it down

2mm in front. The latter is because my resting smile only shows my

lower teeth, instead of showing my uppers. (The resting smile is

when you open your mouth and part your lips.) I go back to my OMS on

Dec. 13th, so that he and I can finalize the procedures he will be

performing on me next year. At my last appointment with him in Aug.,

he was almost certain he would be performing both surgeries. I just

want it to be done right; he can't do the lower and then decide to

do the upper in a year or two. You mentioned insurance; my insurance

thru my employer (a large hospital) doesn't cover this surgery, so I

will be having my surgery at a small (9-bed) short-term hospital

that my OMS has privileges at. This hospital charges a quarter to a

third of what my employer would be charging me for the exact same

procedures, so I think it's a " no-brainer " . This, for me, is out-of-

pocket, but my insurance did pay $1K of the $5K braces total. The

only good thing about paying for this out-of-pocket is that I will

be able to declare it as such on my tax return in 2007. ~~~~ Diane
