Guest guest
Hi a - I don't have pictures posted yet, but your profile looks similar to what mine looked like. I'm 9-1/2 weeks post-op from a 5mm advancement for an overbite. It wasn't an easy decision for me because it was optional (I could have visually straight teeth after braces, or I could get the surgery and have proper function too). My family and friends didn't think I needed to do it. I finally decided to do it because I wanted to give my teeth the best fit after the braces (this is my second time in braces, I want it done right) and because I wanted to have a profile that looked " normal " without always having to thrust my chin forward to get it. Obviously you have to decide for yourself and weigh the risks vs. the benefits, but from what I've read this is a surgery with a very low failure rate. Permanent numbness is the biggest risk, and I've read that by the end of one year something like 98% have recovered feeling. I do have numbness still in one area of my right lower lip and down my chin, but it's always tingly so I'm confident the feeling will return over time. Most of the time I don't really notice it anymore. The recovery can be hard emotionally at times so you'll need a daily dose of patience while your mind and body adjust to the new position, and there were several times when I questioned my decision - but now I'm very glad I did it. I love my " revised " profile, and my bite looks great. Good luck to you this Friday, think positive! Guest guest
Hi a - I'm a self-employed graphic designer so I was able to start back part time by day 5, full time by day 9 or so because I was able to work flexible hours. I napped every day during that first week back. You have a more physical job - I would guess by 2 weeks you'd be ready but expect to get worn out more easily, and get lots of rest! I had a lot of swelling and a fair amount of bruising but by 2 weeks most people couldn't tell and I was ready to face the world without feeling like I looked hideous ) I still have residual swelling, but nobody else can really tell but me. The toughest part in those first few weeks is getting proper nutrition so you don't lose weight too fast and feel really weak and worn out. I ate every 3 hours and did lots of protein drinks and soups. I still lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks, but maintained the weight well after that. Keep reading through all the other posts, there are lots of folks in the same situation as you and me - I got tons of useful info from this site! Guest guest
Hi la, I just had this same surgery 15 days ago (lower jaw advanced 7mm). I am back to work now with no problems. I still have a splint in and talk a little funny but the swelling is not noticeable now. My swelling peaked at day 6 and then went gradually down. However I have an office job, I would think you might want at least another week if you do massage. I still get tired about mid afternoon. I had no bruising at all. I looked at your pictures, they looked fairly similar to how I looked pre-surgery. I am very happy with my results. You will have to decide for yourself if you want to go for it. > > > > Hello everyone! > > I am so glad I discovered this web site 2 days ago, i have read a > lot > > of positive, but also some negative about the surgery. > > I have overbite and I am having my lower jaw advancement this > Friday > > and I am really worried that something will go wrong. Guest guest
a, My old side profile looked kind of like yours espec the chin. A year ago I have lefort 1 (upper moved back) and genioplasty (chin cut and moved out)..due to complication I have had 3 more upper and 1 lower chin..this last upper and lower was done with bone graft from hip 4 weeks ago..he broke the lower jaw so that the lower and upper would heal together because I was grinding my teeth and breaking the plates that held the bone together to heal..so far so good this time..from what I experienced and heard the lower jaw surgery is easier to heal and less painful than the upper, and it was to me..I really couldnt tell the lower was even done..I have been wired shut for 4 weeks and will prob get unwired in 1 more week YEAH!!! then wear bands for 4 more weeks, but at least I can eat.. good luck to you..it doesnt appear that your surgery will be as major as some others..do you have braces? Jill (in Atlanta) Penketh wrote: a, I'm five months post op from upper jaw surgery, major nose reconstruction, cheek bone and bone graft surgery. I had knows for years that I needed the surgery but I was still nervous when it was time for surgery. I'm glad that I did go through with the surgery! durkovicova wrote: Hello everyone! Many people tells me that I don't need the surgery, that I look fine, but my orthodontist and my OS tell me that it the best way to fix my smile. I would like to get your opinion, of whoever reads this post. I am going to post my pictures, they will we under name a. Thank you all in advance for all your replays. a
