Guest guest
So... it looks like I've got thyroid cancer. They think it's the " good " kind that is very curable. But I need to have my thyroid out probably sometime in September, and then do radio active iodine and be isolated for a week. Ain't life fun? Does anyone know how this *might* affect my progress on SCD? I've read that the thyroid controls the housekeeper wave in the intestines, so a sluggish thyroid can cause more bad bacteria to build up. My endo says she can optimize my thyroid hormones after the thyroidectomy, but will it seem the same as if I had a thyroid in regards to my intestines? So I'm wondering if there are any SCDers in our group who've had thyroidectomies who would share their experience with me. I'm concerned about losing all the progress I've made on SCD these last 6 months. SCD has been SO helpful to me! Thanks, Tamra in Gilroy

Tamra, Been there with the cancer diagnosis. It's not fun. I strongly recommend that you prepare your foods so that you can bring in food for the surgery, and also for your period of isolation. Don't count on hospitals to provide something SCD legal. Their food service contracts don't allow it. Guest guest
Tamra I haven’t experienced a thyroidectomy, but have done enough research into digestion because of my functional GI disorders to know that thyroid plays an important role in digestion. I am sure that you will be put on thyroid supplements after the surgery that will take care of things. However you probably should plan on a period of adjustment after the surgery, so you might need to experiment with your foods in case there are some that aren’t as well-tolerated as they have been. At the very least you will need some time to adjust the thyroid supplement dosages (and types) so that things work right for you, and in the meantime I think you can expect your digestion won’t be working as well as usual. It may take you a few weeks to recover from the surgery, so it will help to cook and freeze many meals ahead of time. I’ve found, after my surgeries, that my digestion takes a while to recover from the anesthetics and general stress and trauma, so I eat my “safe” foods for a month or two or three. And, just in case, although I hope you don’t have to learn this lesson – we do adapt to our digestions not working normally. There are always options. I have poor digestive motility due to my developing Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction and continuing to deal with a deteriorating nervous system. I manage the symptoms very well, thanks to being on SCD and doing some other things that help. Yes, it is frustrating and worrying at times, but as long as I can figure out ways to cope I don’t let it stop me from doing things. I can’t eat as many of the SCD foods as I’d like, but I do eat well and I’ve learned to keep symptoms minimal. I know lots of people who have done the same sort of thing – we figure out what works and what doesn’t. Let us know how things go for you. I’m sure you will do fine. Kim M.
