My mom, who has a number of health issues including Rheut. Arth,. began having D and blood back early summer. Lasted a while, had times of feeling kind of sick. The doc never tested for anything but put her on Questrian (which is a medicine that binds you). During that time she had a trip to the ER w/what she thought was heart pain. Turned out her heart was fine and they thought it might be stomach related. Eventually her D and blood cleared up. Yesterday she was perfectly fine, this morning she woke up with a fever of 101.7 and has pain in her lower right stomach and is somewhat nauseated. She feels pretty awful. Does this sound like appendix or another stomach issue - ie Crohns?? I was pretty mad that the docs never tested her for anything and possibly just masked the symptoms? I guess it could be a bug she has but w/her history I think it's something else?? I don't know what CD or UC feels like so I just wondered if anyone else thought this could be something more?

Marla- I don't want to be an alarmist, but this sounds like appendicitis! The

symptoms you described are all classic ones- fever, nausea and pain on the right

side. Does she feel pain on her right side when she presses on the left side of

her abdomen? That's another indication. I had appendicitis 4 years ago. I

ignored it for about 2 days until I nearly passed out from pain- not smart!!! If

she still has a fever (and given her age) I would take her to the ER...

Marla,

If you haven't already done it I think you should take your mom to ER to

check for appendicitis. I had acute appendicitis several times and

chronic in between for about two years before I finally got the lower

right pain as indicative of it to get checked. At which point my appendiz

was letting loose. The symptoms just seemed like what I went

through frequently before that, only somewhat more so. But

appendicitis is nothing to fool around with because you don't want it to

burst. That lower right pain and the fever are indicative. I know

it can be other things, but it's better to get this one checked out,

believe me. I had a pretty long recovery because of not being smart

enough and not having quite the right symptoms for a long time.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't have a computer to answer them! Took my mom to the ER because, I too, thought it sounded like appendix. The only thing that was found was a UTI (which she is already on low-dose antibiotics for). I have never seen her so out of it and not being able to function. But, after a day and a half on the strong antibiotic she is starting to feel better.

A little tidbit about UTI's. Her neighbor unknowingly had a UTI once and her daughter came in the house to find her naked, sitting in a chair, with chairs and couch cushions all over the place - like she had gone crazy. Turns out it was all from the UTI. SO....I guess UTI's can be pretty serious stuff!

Wow- that's scary! I am so glad she is more herself. I think you did the right

thing taking her to the ER!
