Guest guest
I was banded after my surgery 7/18, but able to take the bands off for 20 minutes 4 times a day in order to eat. Now I can have my bands off all day and sleep with them on. Every Dr. is different about the bands. I hope you can get something down and keep it down soon My thought go out to you. Since you are weak, have you tried any boost or ensure? After my palatal expander surgery in October of 03, I remember being in the shower 2 weeks after surgery and the shower was spinning around me. My husband went and bought me some ensure and it helped tremdously. I just had my upper jaw set back 3 1/2 weeks ago and I started with ensure and boost the very day I came home and it has really helped. Even though I have moved onto blended food, I still find myself drinking at least one boost or ensure a day. > I am about 16 days post op and have an issue with eating. Guest guest
Thank you, I will mention that to my doctor. I can't wait to eat again- even if its mashed potatoes. I hope he will work something out with me. Were you given an estimate of when you will be able to eat again? I see alot of people on here six months after surgery that still cant eat. - In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " (Dee) " <dpwilson2182@y...> wrote: > I was banded after my surgery 7/18, but able to take the bands off > for 20 minutes 4 times a day in order to eat. Guest guest
If you want some potatoes, try cooking some and then blending them with milk and butter to get them soupy so you could drink. I found that if I craved something it went down much better. I tried to listen to what my stomach wanted and then went from there. If you can stomach the boost or ensure (some people can't) at least it will give you some of the stuff your body requires. Those can be bought right over the counter. I found that I couldn't do the chocolate flavor (that really surprised me, because I was a choc-o- holic pre-surgery), but I could do the vanilla without a problem. I normally don't like strawberry, but was able to do strawberry drinks as well. My taste buds were all messed up with the medicine I was on. I'm not on as much now and my taste buds are going back to normal. I know I'm forbidden to chew until September 1 when my splint comes off. She really hasn't indicated what I will be able to do at that point, it will depend on my healing. I'm sure I won't leave the office and have steak....I will have to ease back into it. At every visit she says it is going good, so we are going in the right direction. I hope that helps. > > > I am about 16 days post op and have an issue with eating. Guest guest
Here are my two cents-- I agree that the thinner mashed potatoes are great because they fill you up--give your stomach something to chew on (even though your mouth can't). Put a lot of sour cream in there with the butter, too. You need more calories if you're weak. I was 5'2 " and 130 pounds when I had my surgery, and the dietician told me that I needed between 2200 and 2600 calories a day. It was hard to do that, but on the days I didn't get about 2000-2200, I definitely felt it. If they didn't give you a calorie goal, I'd call and ask what you should be getting per day based on your size. Also, you really, really need lots of protein to help your body heal. I bought some powdered soy protein from GNC and added it to milk shakes and smoothies. I was told to get 55 g (?) of protein a day. Not getting enough protein could be making you weak, too. I drank a lot of Boost (vanilla was the only kind I liked) and made sure I had one in a cooler bag whenever I went anywhere because the hungries came up FAST for me. This sounds gross, but I LOVED blended chili with shredded cheese, sour cream, and a little extra tomato sauce added. It tasted like chili soup, and I would eat it again now. It gives you protein, calories, and a great full feeling that lasts longer than a lot of foods. I hope this helps. I haven't been here in a year, so I don't know your history, but I felt your pain when I saw the subject line of your message. Hang in there! Pretty soon you'll be chomping on a burger (and it will be the best one you've ever tasted). Carleen
Guest guest
Hey there, I had upper and lower jaw surgery and I was completely banded shut for three weeks. My bands came off Friday and I've been able to eat quite a few things. It's difficult at first b/c my mouth won't open that far but gets easier. Tonight I had a really tender beef roast, mashed potatos, cornbread, and fresh garden tomatos and then cheesecake for dessert. All without chewing. I just cut everything into small pieces and most of what I ate would dissolve in my mouth. The roast just had to be extra small pieces so I wouldn't choke on it. I'm sure my OS will probably die when he hears what I had to eat until I assure him not chewing was invovled. I was technically not supposed to have my wires off for three more weeks. Anyway, hope that reassures you that eating non-blenderized food is possible even at 3 weeks post op...just have to be creative about how you go about it. --ashley > > > I am about 16 days post op and have an issue with eating. Guest guest
, thanks for the heads up- How did you get you OS to take your bands off this early? I am going to mention to my surgeon on Tuesday that it is hard for me to work like this. I work full time and I start my next college semester in 1 week. I thought I would have more time but my OS could not schedule me until July 28th for surgery. If he had been able to do it earlier it would have worked out better. I can not get of work and five and head straight to school and expect to find something liquid that I can eat before school. I am glad you can eat I have somet hign to look forward to. I am suprized that I have only lost 10 pounds being that I dont eat.Did you loose weight and get real weak? THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!! > > > > I am about 16 days post op and have an issue with eating. Guest guest
My surgery was originally scheduled for June 10 and when it had to be postponed because my impressions weren't matching up the way they should my mom just called my OS and just asked him if my bands could come off in 3 weeks...if it was logical and possible because i had to start school with them off and if the time frame wouldn't work we'd have to postpone another year...and he said that he'd work with us beacuse it would depend on how my healing was going but that it was not out of the question...and my healing has went exceptionally well...he said my swelling was about a 4 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being worst and i didn't bruise at all...so it all worked to my advantage...i think i have lost about 8 lbs but i've really tried to eat as many calories as possible...i think i'll probably lost about 10 more lbs in the next few weeks though when i do start school because i'll be walking a whole lot around campus and burning off most of what i can take in...and yes the first week i was in the shower getting ready to go see my OS for my second check up appt and i nearly blacked out...in fact i may have for a few minutes b/c i was feeling really bad and had already sat down in the tub just in case....anyway i got out of the shower and had to postpone my appt...needless to say i started drinking more boost and as many shakes and juices as i could...i found that welch's makes little six packs of juices that are really tasty and have about 160 calories each...i would drink two or three of those a day on top of my shakes and stuff...i started putting the vanilla boost in the milkshakes too to help with that...i haven't really felt weak since about the week and a half point...although if i go to wal mart or somewhere and do alot of walking i have to get a drink about halfway through.... --ashley > > > > > I am about 16 days post op and have an issue with eating. > The > > > day > > > > I am > > > > > home from surgery I ate some broth and threw up so after > that I > > > > was > > > > > not into soup.
