Guest guest
, I don't think it is legal.Natural sweeteners can mean anything.Even a little bit of illegal can feed a lot of bacteria. For those concerned about carbs- you can dilute the grape juice. I would want to know exactly what the " natural sweeteners " are. Guest guest
PJ, Thanks for the response. The sweetener in the drink is crystalline fructose. Crystalline fructose is nearly 100% fructose but also about 20 to 30 times sweeter than High Fructose Corn Syrup. In Grape Juice, the main sugars are both glucose and fructose and they are present in LARGE quantities. 29+ grams. Even though glucose is easily absorbed, 29 grams is still a lot and will still feed bacteria. Vitamin Water Zero has 0 calories. and less than 1 gram of sugar. I cant see how LESS THAN 1 gram of sugar can be worse than 29g even if those 29 grams were pure glucose(which they're not). - > , > I don't think it is legal.Natural sweeteners can mean anything.Even a > little bit of illegal can feed a lot of bacteria. Guest guest
Hi , I see your point. One of the issues is that Elaine Gottschall is no longer alive and can not decide if new products are compatible with the diet she developed. I don't know what the solution to this is. I know that I am not one of the moderators or experts on SCD, so I could not address this. In general- we stick to the original plans. Vitamin Water is a relatively new product. Perhaps there will be a comittee one day that will speak to this issue. Until then, we stay with foods that have been certified as legal to get the best results possible. Guest guest
PJ, I appreciate the response. I guess it's essentially up to our body's to determine if something questionable is legal or illegal. I guess if an added food is tolerated over the longterm then its probably, ok. The main idea of this diet from what i understand is to drastically reduce carb intake and eat natural non processed foods, thus promoting the healing process. Ill look into it more but the logic of the situation has me in favor of using this drink in small doses. Just like honey which I recently found contains 9% Sucrose/Maltsoe. Maybe thats why some people fail on this diet. They over indulge on " legal " things because they cant kick the habit of their old addictions. - SCD day 9 > Hi , > I see your point. Guest guest
Yes, there are people who adapt things to the diet. What the moderators here adk is that if any time things are not working for you, please don't say " SCD does not work " if you have not been strictly adhering to it, because using anything not legal is not the original SCD.. If at any time you do not improve, it is best to eliminate any non legal SCD foods. Guest guest
oh, and also not to discuss your personal use of illegals on this board in order not to mislead people new to SCD. It may work for you but not for others. The moderators can not recommend using it. This board is dedicated to following the original SCD. It's not that we are not open to thinking for ourselves- quite the contrary here- but that we want the results of the diet as originally created and are here to help others do the same. Hope you make good progress, PJ > > >> >> > > >> >> It says it has less than 1 gram of sugar and all natural sweeteners. > > >> I > > >> >> can't believe its worse than grape juice which has 29 grams of sugar. > > >> >> > > >> >> - > > >> >> SCD 8 days > > >> >> Diagnosed 5/10 colitis > > >> >> > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > >

I'll be blunt: It's your body, if you want to drink the stuff, it's your game. I don't trust processed expensive junk. If, however, you choose to use it and you are not seeing progress with SCD the way you would like, then I would suggest yanking the Vitamin Water. Personally, I wouldn't touch it. I'd rather have diluted grape juice. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

No. SCD is not a low carbohydrate diet. It is the SPECIFIC carbohydrate diet. We ingest primarily monosaccharides. We eliminate as many of the non-legal carbs as possible. We do not necessarily eliminate them all, particularly if they are in a whole food, which the crystalline fructose in Vitamin Water is not. If you choose to use this product, please do not say that " SCD doesn't work, " if you have issues. This board is dedicated to SCD the way Elaine Gottschall wrote about it. I happen to have a supplement which is not SCD legal. I discussed it with Elaine, and we concluded that the benefits outweighed the problems, though she cautioned me that my healing would take longer with it. She was right. I don't, however, mention the supplement by name on the board. The fact is, you don't NEED Vitamin Water. You WANT it. Elaine used to throw up her hands when people kept coming up with reasons why this or that commercial product was great. BTW, Larabars will no longer be sold on Digestive Wellness. And, in a discussion with Lucy, of Lucy's Kitchen Shop, she said that whenever she talks to someone who is having issues, the first thing she asks is if the person has been eating Larabars. If they have, she tells them to stop. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
But also remember that extracted elements are always more problematic than whole food sources. Extracting one element/ingredient means not getting all the surrounding enzymes and biochemicals from the plant/fruit that work synergistically. Problematic meaning triggering intolerances, potentially damaging over the long term, perhaps even causing a toxic overload on body systems. In general, chemically speaking, it is usually better to stick to whole food sources for various biochemicals. Since Elaine isn’t here to give us her opinion on this drink, it is a “use at your own risk.” As a moderator I recommend not using it, as it is not SCD-legal. If you aren’t healing, or begin to suffer new or worse symptoms, then stop using this drink. Kim M.
