Guest guest
Myrlene I don't know why you are suggesting interferon as it isn't approved or recommended for pulmonary fibrosis. Perhaps he's thinking of the old interferon gamma-1b which was evaluated but pulled from trials after negative responses. Or maybe another interferon, but I don't know. Interferon gamma-1b, also known as Actimmune, had serious complications with no benefit in trials. I can't fathom any pulmonologist suggesting it at this point. There are many other Interferons but none that I've heard of being used for PF. > > Hello all - I need some input on the use of Interferon with NAC vs Prednisone/Imuran/NAC. > > I was diagnosed with IPF in Sept. I also have been diagnosed with GERD after an endoscopy this month. I have a primary pulmo dr, Gurjeet Kalkat, and have been seen by the pulmo IPF specialist, Dr Shigemitsu, at USC Med Ctr. USC dr recommends the Prednisone/Imuran/NAC but wanted to wait for the results of the endoscopy. When I saw my primary pulmo dr I had the preliminary results from the endoscopy. I asked him about the Prednisone/Imuran/NAC treatment and he stated categorically that " it won't help you " . I believe this is due to the fact that I have no inflammation. He told me to ask the USC dr when I see him again about Interferon. I saw my gastro dr, Mourani, after Dr Kalkat. Dr Mourani believes I should have surgery for my GERD and is requesting a referral to a USC gastro dr for a 2nd opinion. > > Thoughts from anyone - please? Guest guest
Hello, Just to let folks know, one of our Medical Advisory Board Doctors, Rany Condos is actually doing a study using inhaled interferon....here's the link: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00563212?term=pulmonary+fibrosis & rank=\ 20 If the link doesn't come through, go to www.clinicaltrials.gov and type in pulmonary fibrosis. Scroll down until you find the inhaled interferon study. She's in NY and they are actually still enrolling patients I think. Guest guest
Leanne I guess I did interpret her email to read as if she was to ask him about prescribing it, but I guess he could have been asking about a clinical trial, although to my knowledge the only trial, the one you reference, is being done in New York and is a Phase I trial. Perhaps that is what he was referencing however. > > > > > > Hello all - I need some input on the use of Interferon with NAC vs > > Prednisone/Imuran/NAC. > > > > > > I was diagnosed with IPF in Sept. Guest guest
To clarify - I was asking about the dr prescribing Interferon. My primary pulmo dr stated that the prednisone/imuran/NAC would not help me as I have no inflammation. Even the USC pulmo dr sounded " iffy " at best in wanting to prescribe the prednisone/imuran/NAC combo. My primary pulmo dr said to ask the USC pulmo dr about Interferon. I don't know why and couldn't ask since I did not know anything about Interferon at the time of my appt. I also read where the trial of the gamma 1b was shut down early. > > > > > > > > Hello all - I need some input on the use of Interferon with NAC vs > > > Prednisone/Imuran/NAC. > > > > > > > > I was diagnosed with IPF in Sept.
