Guest guest
im four days post op now, I really havent experienced any pain until now. My right side is throbbing and hurts quite a bit close to my ear. I ran out of pain medicine, I cant get any till tomorrow and that is not good...I dont know why the surgeon didnt give me any refils. im not sure I can handle this much longer, its only been four days, i consider myself a tough person but this is rough. I am banded shut so tight, I dont know if it should be this tight, I cant open my mouth at all. I have to go back to my surgeon tuesday so I need to survive tonight and tomorrow, hopefully tomorrow wont be to bad as i will will be able to get some pain medicine. tuesday he is going to take everything off and examine my bite, which he didnt think looked right, god I hope things are better, I just want things to be good, I dont wanna have to get operated on again. Swelling doesnt seem to be getting better at all, Ive been using ice off and on but it doesnt seem to help. I feel like clipping these bands off they are way too tight it seems, hard to handle but I guess I will bear with it. I havent been eating much, normally just like 4 ensures a day and some ice cream, just dont have an appetite. This was not what I expected, mabye im an exception or not I dont know. As long as my bite turns out good it will be worth it but Im not even sure about that.
Guest guest
Hi nky_guy, Do you have any extra strength tylenol at home? You can crush them up and mix with water, then use a syringe to swallow. This will help until you can get whatever other pain medicine you're on tomorrow. Being banded tight so you can't open your mouth is o.k. and not uncommon - your surgeon probably does not want you to be able to open your mouth at all. There are alot of people on this site that are banded tightly shut or wired shut. Your swelling will take a long time.....ice won't really help at 4 days - you need to apply heat. Use a heating pad or a hot wash cloth. Supposedly, if you do this every hour it will help with the swelling. It does go down very, very slowly.... You will make it through this....it's a very slow recovery, don't panic - you are only 4 days. Each day will get a little bit easier.......I had pain near my ears as well, it is finally gone at 5 weeks now, but it last a long time. Maybe talk to your surgeon about getting a prescription for Ativan - it's an anti-anxiety that will help you calm down...I am still taking at night to help sleep and not clench my teeth, it really does help relax you and will help you get through this tough recovery. Take care and keep posting on your progress. > > im four days post op now, I really havent experienced any pain until > now. My right side is throbbing and hurts quite a bit close to my > ear. Guest guest
Hello, I think you should call your Surgeon immediately. Your surgeon needs to get you some more pain meds NOW; just call his office or exchange - if he's not on-call, someone has to be taking emergencies for him. I'm not a doctor but the symptoms you are having (swelling not getting better, right side throbbing, PAIN) suggests the possibility of an infection. Please don't wait until Tuesday - call your surgeon's office soon! ~~~ Diane (Idaho) > > im four days post op now, I really havent experienced any pain until > now. Guest guest
Hang in there. I am pre-op, but from what I have read on this board, days 3-5 (depending upon the person) seem to be the worst. I always tell myself with anything, " It can only get better! " Stay strong, you can do it. All the best, Sandy, PA > > im four days post op now, I really havent experienced any pain until > now. Guest guest
Hi Brad The pain your having right above your ear is what I had too for about the first 10 days post-op. I was taking codeine and penicillin which really did a number on my dreams (I had really weird dreams) but it helped with the pain. I only took the codeine at night before going to sleep. During the day I used to walk around with a frozen bag of peas and alternate putting it on each joint that was hurting me. I would also really try to relax because I had a feeling that my stressing so much over the pain was only making it worse. I would lie down and listen to some relaxing music on my iPod and that helped somehwat. I also had no appetite whatsoever post-op and I hated the ensure. The thought of ice cream made me want to vomit. I found salty chicken broth much more comforting and even though I couldn't get much of it down it helped make me feel better. Right now the pain is probably due to the fact that your jaw is asking " what the hell is going on? why am i banded shut and in this new position? " I promise it will get better. I know it seems impossible right now but try to do things that make you relax and distract you a bit from the pain. Hold on tight. It does get better and it's worth it for the final result. Guest guest
Also, the swelling is probably peaking right at this moment so it's normal that it's not getting any less. My swelling peaked between day 4 and 6 and only at day 10 did I begin to see a difference in my swelling i.e. it started to go down. Guest guest
Hi Nky_guy77, I agree with Diane, you should call your OMS. They can call in a prescription for you. There is no reason for you to be without some medical assistance at day 4. Please let us know what you find out.
