Guest guest
I don't understand why the doctors were upset with Becca's weight. My non RSS child who is 5 weights 45 pounds... I don't think she's over weight. No doctor has ever mentioned to me about putting her on a special diet. We do need to watch what she eats.. she will always ask for more, but we need to realize that after 2nds.. she has had enough. Strangely my RSS child will eat with no problems. Today I " m trying to feed her every hour. Not big things.. just snacks. I feel like I have let the ball drop with . I need to take advantage of her willingness to eat while I can. But no matter what I do.. she's still under weight. Hang in there Judith... keep us posted! Pickett Sidny27 wrote: > Hi all, > > While we saw Dr H on Friday, she also weighed/measured . Guest guest
Hey Judith...... great news for and as always, I suppose with twins, there will be two sides to every coin!! But at least you have a knowledge of what to expect if you are going to travel down THAT road once again! I don't know a thing about hyperlexia.....I am intrigued to learn more. I hope someone knows and they post it!! If you get any private ones, let me know the gist of it!! Have a good day and thanks for updating us!! Debby B. Update on - the non RSS twin Hi all, While we saw Dr H on Friday, she also weighed/measured . No surprise, she wasn't happy. Becca is currently 109.2 cm and 22.4 kg (43 inches and 49 1/2 pounds). That puts Becca in the 25% for height and 75% for weight. Needless to say, we got a lecture on what/how much we feed her. While I agree that we could push the healthier foods, I will NOT refuse my child food when she says she is hungry (which is ALWAYS)!!! She even hates our choice of vegetables - peas and corn are at the top of Becca's list. Dr H wants us to push the broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, green beans and wax beans. Thankfully, Becca seems to like all of these except cauliflower, so we will try. Dr H wants us to bring Becca back in 6 months for a bone age. She is very concerned about early puberty (which runs in my family for the girls). I have a feeling that we will be doing blood work on her soon as well. Additionally, she feels that Becca is hyperlexic. Becca does fit many characteristics. She started reading at age 3 and is obsessed by books. She is awkward socially and doesn't quite fit in. However, the school counselor says that Becca is very advance in her compassion and will go over to children who are alone and try to befriend them. I am trying to decide if this is an issue I should bring up when we have our IEP meeting or not. Becca currently receives PT, OT and counseling. Becca is currently on anti-anxiety medication. Does anyone know anything about hyperlexia? If so, please email me or post. Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 6 year old twins
Guest guest
Hi I think the issue here is the height vs weight. Your non RSS 5 year old may be much taller than Becca and that is the difference. You might check that out too! Debby B. Guest guest
Judith, I'm sorry to hear of your issues with . It must be difficult to manage feeding every calorie you can while watching what eats. Have you ever tried putting cauliflower through the food processor? We add some milk, butter and garlic and it tastes just like mashed potatoes. Colin (RSS) and Hayden - 5 years 2 mo. Grant - 26 mo.
Guest guest
Judith, My 6 year old nephew has been diagnosed with hyperlexia. He was reading at around 2 and when I say reading I mean words like wrench and screwdriver. He was also obsessed with numbers and always has to have stimulation in that area. I noticed when we went to Chilis one night for dinner he just sat and read things and stared at any numbers or letters, but he rarely interacts with people. He will not say hi, bye or really acknowledge anyone unless he doesn't get his way. He is easily angered and has difficulty handling anywhere that is loud, has music or someone crying. He may be an extreme case. Most people would think he was very immature, spoiled and/or autistic. My sister in law has done a ton of speak therapy as well as situational therapy trying to help him react better to the things that bother him. THerapy has helped him a ton and they say the earlier you can get it, the better. It doesn't sound like Becca is anywhere as extreme as my nephew. He would never notice someone else in the class unless they took his place in the front of the line! Just to reassure you also, I had two children that learned to read at around four and they were never taught to read. Some kids are very visual and they just pick it up. They say hyperlexia children are the ones that alphabetize everything when they are 2 years old. Letters and numbers are their whole world. I hope you find some answers, if you need any books let me know, I'll check with my sister in law. Pattie > > Hi all, > > While we saw Dr H on Friday, she also weighed/measured . Guest guest
After reading these posts I looked up this condition on the web and Isaac fits into many of the characteristics and is obsessed with doing. He counts everything and lines them up by threes. He has always loved books from the time he was about 9 months old. There are a couple of noises that send him into a panic one is the doorbell and my in'laws phone is the other. He goes ballistic when he hears them and so I have taped a note over my doorbell that says please knock. He has been crying at the phone for over a year. When he is counting or looking at a book he is in his own little world. I can call his name over and over and he doesn't look at me or seem to realize I have been talking to him. In the last month I have noticed that whenever his pants or shirt ride up and leave skin exposed (ankles, belly, etc.) he immediately pulls them down. Even when I change his diaper he is constantly tugging at his shirt to cover his belly. Tonight I put on short sleeved- pj's and he kept tugging at the sleeves and crying until I put on long sleeves. His speech therapist is coming tomorrow. Is she the appropriate person to ask about this? We see the pediatrician on Friday for a weight check (yikes..I am not looking forward to another one) should I ask him? I am so glad you shared this info... P.S.- Thank you to everyone who gave advice on potty training. It is very helpful!! Guest guest
Judith - When it rains, it pours, doesn't it.... I read some of the replies to your post. Did Dr. H explain where Becca's BMI is? I charted her (just entered it as a 6-year-old) and you are correct, 25% for height and 75% for weight, but that makes her BMI more than the 95th percentile. I just finished revising DR. Czernichow's chapter for our Guidebook, and had to do a lot of research. Dr. Harbison is worried, obviously. Her worry is dictated by her research on children born SGA. Was Becca born SGA as well as her brother? I remember they were born early, but can't recall if Becca was SGA and caught up normally or not. But either way, children in the highest BMI in childhood run significant risks of developing early puberty, insulin resistance and a host of other medical issues. This risk increases multifold if the child is also born small for gestational age. I am guessing she explained why peas and corns are not high on the list of ideal vegies, but thank goodness that Becca likes other vegies!!! My own son eats ONE vegetable.... carrots.... dipped in hummus, or ranch dressing, etc. It sounds like you will have two kids on the opposite spectrum. One has a strong appetite that will have to be monitored in terms of caloric intake, and the other has the weak appetite that will also have to be monitored in terms of caloric intake. I have NO idea how you balance that! I wish you the absolute best. I hope others can have some answers for you on the ...lexic question. Lots of love!!! > > Hi all, > > While we saw Dr H on Friday, she also weighed/measured . No > surprise, she wasn't happy. Becca is currently 109.2 cm and 22.4 kg > (43 inches and 49 1/2 pounds). Guest guest
Hi Pattie, Based on your information and what I have been finding online, I am just not sure this fits . She taught herself to read when she was 3, but she is very interactive. She is awkward socially, but not at all withdrawn (onless there is too much activity around her in which case she will read a book). Becca has read the first 3 Harry Potter books by herself. Thanks for the information, Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 6 year old twins
Guest guest
Hi , Dr H didn't say anything about Becca's BMI. Becca was not born SGA, she was born at 33 weeks 5 pounds 3 ounces and 17 inches. Dr H did explain that peas and corn are too starchy. Thankfully I located a stack of cans of green and wax beans in the cabinet and pulled some out for dinner tonight. There is also fresh broccoli that my nanny didn't cook because she didn't think Becca liked it! I also spoke with my nanny last night about feeding Becca healthier snacks etc. Part of the problem is that Becca is a grazer. She comes home from school and asks for snacks all afternoon. Then she doesn't want to eat dinner but is starving at 7:30 (bedtime is 8). Last night at 7:30 she ate 2 leftover dumplings, 1/2 banana (shared with ) and 1 slice of cheese. She then complained she was still hungry! Dr H wants to do a bone age on Becca in August and will start following her more closely now as well. Thankfully the weather will warm up soon. We start soccer again in April and tball as well. Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 6 year old twins
