Guest guest
Not Marilyn, but I'll try to help ;-). If I recall, my GI office says not to eat vegetables or any high fiber foods for 2 days before the colonoscopy. So the day before prep day, I eat my yogurt, nut butter brownies, cheese, meat, and gelatin. Basically, I only skip the fruit and veggies. The day before your colonoscopy (prep day), you can't eat any solid foods. I usually just have some gelatin, strained apple cider, and tea with a little honey in it. It's fairly easy for me to get by without eating much, so I don't usually go to the trouble of making broth. Personally, I've always been squeaky clean for the scope, so I've never felt the need to be any more strict than this. Oh, and my GI also says to stop all anti-inflammatory supplements (including vitamin E), 7 - 10 days before the scope. Same goes for any iron supplements. My colonoscopy is coming up soon too. Hope both of us have glowing reports :-). Guest guest
Thanks Holly. If I understand your reply correctly, then, I could bake pecan-butter and pureed baked squash into brownies tonight without risking any problems with my colonoscopy. Oddly enough, the clinic said nothing about avoiding fibre, just seeds, nuts, and certain medications, in advance of the prep day. I have been eating a lot of pineapple and mango this week, along with our usual cooked vegetables, such as broccoli, squash, spinach, and zucchini (but not the seed portion). I had already stopped taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pills and cream, but I wasn't aware that I had to stop taking vitamin E as well. I suspect that also applies to EPA/DHA fish oil capsules, which I take as natural anti-inflammatories. I don't take any iron supplements, so I won't have to worry about stopping them. Thanks again. I am planning to make zucchini pasta, using only the parts of each zucchini that don't contain seeds, which I assume avoids the seed issue. I think it would be safer just to avoid the zucchini altogether... you don't want to go through the dratted clean-out only to find you missed a seed or seeds and that it " obscured the view. " I've known people who ended up going through the clean-out four times before they got a proper colonoscopy. That's fer SHURE not my cup of tea! I asked the clinic whether I could use smooth nut butter, such as peanut butter or almond butter, only to be told that these are not allowed. I am curious whether you were allowed to consume smooth nut butters during the days before your colonoscopy. Nope, no nuts or nut butters. For one thing, my doc said nothing with fats because it causes your system to put out the digestive enzymes, and the enzymes turn dark as they transit the system, and (you guessed it), they " obscure the view. " I had planned to bake a small batch of pecan-squash brownies, without sprinkling pecan pieces on top, but I haven't done so because of the clinic instructions. Tonight, I will try to bake an SCD bread using coconut flour, because it is made from a fruit (coconut) rather than nuts. They took away everything I use to handle muscle spasm and I very nearly ended up in the emergency room because of it. What I got was bromelain, and took 2-3 capsules on an empty stomach (which isn't hard when you're doing clear liquids) and it acts as an anti-inflammatory. Be sure you aren't allergic to pineapple before using bromelain. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
My last colonoscopy was a couple of years ago, and they had me have a pre-prep for three days before hte strict prep day. The pre-prep days I had to have everything cooked well except bananas which they said are practically pre-digested anyhow. Prep day I could have non-cloudy juices, and I used apple juice and grape. Some people say you can't have red or purple juices but that means stuff like Jello, at least my nurse explained real grape juice was OK. I got white and purple (sugar free) grape juices. Apparently the real stuff doesn't dye your gut insides. I made my own chicken broth and strained it well, and also had tea.
Guest guest
I've heard that bit about no vitamin E before surgery but they didn't make me drop it before the colonoscopy or even before gum surgery! I haven't bled to death yet. If you can manage without it it's probably better but that's one of my arsenal against hot flashes so I was glad I could keep it. They let me take my essential pills like thyroid the morning of prep day. I had already stopped taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pills and cream, but I wasn't aware that I had to stop taking vitamin E as well. Guest guest
Marilyn, how many days before your colonoscopy did you have to stop all of your natural anti-inflammatories? My doctor didn't say anything about fat. How many days before your colonoscopy were you told to cut back? I've always eaten yogurt, cheese, and nut butter the day before the prep. I didn't know it could cause any issues. It seems like every stinkin' clinic has different prep instructions! It would be nice if they came up with a standard that everyone followed. Guest guest
Hi again Holly and Marilyn.I am adding to Holly's comments and questions to Marilyn. " spookyhurst " wrote in <BTVC-SCD > Wednesday, October 06, 2010 3:05 AM >Marilyn, how many days before your colonoscopy did you have to stop all of >your natural anti-inflammatories? Ellen: The clinic I am going to didn't say anything about stopping natural anti-inflammatories. They only mentioned aspirin, plavix, and NSAIDS. After reading Holly's reply about Vitamin E, I stopped taking it, but possibly not in time, if this really matters. >My doctor didn't say anything about fat. Ellen: I was told that I could not have any gelatin or chicken broth on the prep day (day before colonoscopy) because protein might interfere with the results. However, I was not instructed to remove any foods other than seeds, nuts, and fruits high in seeds, such as berries and kiwifruits. As far as I can tell, I can still eat fats, seedless produce, meats and yogurt today, and tomorrow before 8 am. I have stopped taking Vitamin E and EPA/DHA fish oil capsules, but only 2 days in advance. I don't have any bromelain here, unfortunately, and I don't think I will be able to get to a store that sells such items. I had a delayed allergy to pineapple some years ago, but stopping eating pineapple for a few years seems to have solved that allergy, so that I can eat it in rotation.I have been eating pineapple this week and plan to have some in my final breakfast early Thursday. The reason for the elimination of the fat, I was told by the very nice gastro nurse who helped me calm down after I went through the roof over being given cookie-cutter intructions (jerks ruined my last Christmas and New Years with my mom!) is that (a) fat is the slowest to digest, and ( fat triggers the production of various gastric juices which turn dark in the gut and can obscure the view if they are there. I can state that the system cuts off making the gastric juices pretty quick (at least, MY system did: our perpetual caveat!) and took awhile to cope with the oils after a little over 36 hours without. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
I googled colonoscopy prep instructions, and came up with a ton a whole bunch of contradicting info from various GI clinics. I'll start out with the 2 craziest instructions I found: Crazy prep instruction #1: BREAKFAST: You may have a normal breakfast if it is consumed by 8:00 am. After 8:00AM, begin a full liquid diet, which includes the following: Carbonated drinks, Fruit drinks, Skim Milk, Sustacal, Ensure, Boost, Slim Fast (canned), Custard/Pudding, Broth, Protein shakes, Coffee/Tea, Milkshakes and ice cream, Sherbet, Water, Jell-O, & Gatorade. Crazy prep instruction #2: Have a light breakfast, such as one large or two medium eggs, or a small portion of skinless chicken, turkey or & #64257;sh with 1 slice of white toast, pulp-free orange juice, and creamless coffee or tea. Approximately 10 AM: To minimize hunger and maintain your energy, have One 8 oz bottle of chilled Boost Plus or Ensure Plus and four (4) Animal Crackers or Vanilla Wafers. Follow with 8 oz of any clear liquid. Approximately Noon: To minimize hunger and maintain your energy, have another One 8 oz bottle of chilled Boost Plus or Ensure Plus and four (4) Animal Crackers or Vanilla Wafers. Follow with 8 oz of any clear liquid. Can you imagine eating all that stuff on prep day? I remember my grandma's prep instructions were to eat a normal diet all day, and then drink the prep after supper. Now onto some more reasonable prep day instructions (there is some contradiction between clinics here): Drink 100% cranberry or pomegranate juice (even though it's red, there's no dye in it). To clear your palate of the prep taste, try sucking a lemon or lime wedge before and after each glass. Stop taking iron, Vitamin E, ginko, ginger, aspirin and garlic 7 days prior to colonoscopy. Do these things 2 DAYS BEFORE the procedure: Drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day, Stop taking all anti-inflammatory medicines, including: Nuprin, Bufferin, Anacin, Advil, Motrin, Indocin Voltran, Aleve, Ecotrin, Relafen, Alka Seltzer, Naprosyn, Voltaren (Tylenol is okay to take), Stop eating seeds, popcorn, nuts and whole grains, Do not eat any solid food after midnight. Please stay on a low roughage diet AVOIDING fresh fruits, vegetables, and seeds for 3 days before your procedure. Please avoid Metamucil, vitamins containing iron, raw vegetables, corn, and foods with small seeds such as tomatoes, sesame seeds, kiwi, and cucumbers for a few days before your exam. One other thing that confuses me. I've never been told to stop taking Pentasa before a scope. However, the little beads obviously obstruct the view (see my colon at http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/spookyhurst/colon2.jpg ). Someone once told me they have a little vaccuum to suck out anything that the prep didn't clear. I wonder if that's true, and if they just sucked those little beads out after the picture was taken? Guest guest
Hi Holly I have had 2 colonoscopies and the instructions on what to eat during the preparation was similar to the one's you labelled as " crazy " . Of course they seem crazy to us on SCD but they are designed to be very low residue, in other words very little comes out the other end so that after you drink the real prep you won't have to visit the toilet so much. I followed the instructions they gave as I wasn't on SCD at the time and everything was perfect. Anyway, you need to eat things that are very low in fibre such as eggs and yoghurt. Good luck. Guest guest
The reason I consider them crazy is because the majority of GI's want you on a clear liquid diet on prep day. Why eat all that food when you're just going to have to poop it out in a few hours? It seems like it would be a lot easier on the body to just stick to juice and gelatin. Plus, Marilyn was just talking about how the enzymes that digest fat can " obstruct the view " during a colonoscopy.
