Guest guest
Hi Grace – I also had issues with acorn squash and completely understand how intimidating a new food (or supplement!) can be! I am about 2 ½ months into the diet and still have limited food choices since dairy, eggs, and fruit to not agree with me – or winter squashes (butternut wasn’t as bad, but wasn’t great for me, either). I just added avocado which is a God –send since it helps to extend my time between meals and helps with dehydration since it is high in potassium. I also eat raw almond butter by the spoonful to help get some fats/carbs/fiber in since all my other foods at this point are vegetable or meat. Do you know anyone in your area who does Applied Kinesiology (muscle testing) who can help you to determine which foods will/won’t agree with you? Many chiropractors can test this way for food issues. I find it helpful with determining what to add next but still tread with trepidation! Guest guest
Hi Grace, Sounds like you are fully on the right track! I only started the diet about 4.5 months ago, and I did great at first introducing lots of new foods, but after hitting the 3 month mark, I got a set back, and am now on a lot of " baby foods " again. Here is what has helped me a lot lately - pureeing foods - into soups, smoothies, or things like pumpkin pie (might not be good idea if squash was bad to start out). Anyhow, I find that if I really cook the heck out of new foods and puree them - its so much easier on my system to digest them. Might be a good way to slowly introduce new things. I also just recently cut out dairy - for me I suspect it was causing some of my recent inflammation. But we are all so different! Also, I was using the Nuvaring since December, when my symptoms started getting worse again, so I stopped using it about 2 months ago. Can't say for sure if it has helped, but I do prefer to be off it. It's a tough area - no perfect solution! My favorite way to eat green beans like this: Dry Salted String Beans A few large handfuls of fresh green beans (the skinnier, the better) A couple tablespoons olive oil Salt & Pepper to Taste Optional: Crushed Garlic Toss ingredients together. Layout on cookie/baking sheet. Bake at 400*F for 30 minutes. (Be sure to check on them at 20 minutes). Serve as a side dish, or just eat whole plate of them, like I do! -That said, you might want to boil the string beans, then puree them up in to a creamy green bean soup to start. Just a thought, but by no means the only way to go about trying them. I am also a huge fan of coconut oil - seems to help the inflammation for me, and for a lot of others I have read about. Guest guest
Janine, I'm relieved to know someone else can't tolerate the " easy to digest " squash!! It must be tough without eggs or dairy... though it sounds like you've found other ways to get calories and nutrition. Avocado is something I loved when I wasn't eating meat for awhile, but I didn't even think of trying it with the SCD. High in calories, and dairy-free. I might pick one up next time I go to the grocery store. Also, I love almond butter. I might wait a week or two to try it, but I really hope I tolerate it when I do. I started getting acupuncture this past Friday. At my next appointment, I'll ask my acupuncturist if she knows someone who does Applied Kinesiology. There are also a few other people in my town who might be tuned into that. I'll have to read more about it...thank you for the suggestions. Guest guest
Hi , All great suggestions, thank you. I think I will try boiling the beans and then pureeing them in my food processor. The roasted beans sound terrific, so I'll save that method for later. At least I'll get something green with the pureed beans, and I may have a better chance of not reacting. The birth control issue is something I've flip-flopped on for years. In the past, the pill definitely seemed to contribute to imbalances. I'm hoping the Nuvaring's lower hormone dose will make a positive difference. Remains to be seen...and you're totally right, it's so hard to isolate what might be making you feel icky. Does the coconut oil replace butter for you or is it something you add to smoothies? Sorry to hear about the flare...I remember reading that it's common to have one at 2 or 3 months. Ugh! Good for you for sticking with the baby foods. Just the acorn squash thing felt so discouraging for me, but the knowledge that I can discuss problems with this group and that other people have had " bumpy roads " on the diet helps me stay optimistic about long-term healing. I'm going to try to gather some good soup and smoothie recipes...thanks! Grace > > Hi Grace, > > Sounds like you are fully on the right track! Guest guest
As far as the coconut oil - I try to eat a couple tablespoons of raw coconut oil each day - especially when I am feeling burning/bloating pain. I think it has really helped. Somtimes I mash it into a ripe banana, toss it in a smoothie, or just eat it right off the spoon. I still use a little butter - but NO other dairy at the moment. I am trying to perfect coconut yogurt. My favorite way to have almond butter & coconut oil is kinda of an experiment in progress, measurements are just estimated: Almond Butter Candy: 1/2 cup almond butter 2-3 tbsp honey dash of sea salt 3 tbsp coconut oil Gently melt the coconut oil over low heat. Mix the almond butter & honey together in a bowl, then stick it in the fridge for a little bit to firm up. Roll little balls of the almond butter/honey and roll them in the melted coconut oil. Place on a lined cookie sheet, and freeze for a couple hours. DELISH!! At this very moment I have a new concoction in the freezer, based on a suggestion from Joanna. I have a layer of melted coaco butter, then chilled, then a layer of almond butter & honey (with a dash of sea salt), then a layer of melted coconut oil. Should be similar to a reese peanut butter cup! - SCD 4 Months > > > > Hi Grace, > > > > Sounds like you are fully on the right track! Guest guest
Welcome! Glad you found SCD so fast! Everyone has differing opinions about using the stages from pecanbread, but I think they might really benefit you: http://www.pecanbread.com/p/how/stages.html Keep in mind that this does not include dairy. However, it could be an excellent guide for you to get ideas of what to try to introduce next. I used it and it was so helpful because I felt lost and didn't know where to start. And, by the way, you are not on the intro so don't worry about doing it for too long! The intro is only Dry curd cottage cheese, small amounts of homemade yogurt, eggs, watered down apple cider and grape juice, chicken soup, broiled meats, gelatin and cheesecake. You have already successfully added hard cheeses, banana, honey, and pureed carrots Just a few things to think about... You said you are on an iron supplement- is this oral? Oral iron is not part of SCD- it feeds the bad bacteria. Also, I suspect your multivitamin has some " illegal " ingredients in it. Do you have a list? Does it list iron? What are the " inactive " ingredients? Can you let us know so we can help? There are a few great multi's out there that are perfectly okay (including a pre-natal vitamin) if you are interested. Guest guest
Hi and welcome, From reading your story, you were quite sick and at 14 days, things are still pretty raw, but it is good you are making progress. Sometimes an inflammed gut reacts to everything, but it won't forever. Try expanding in categories- for example if you tolerate fish- try different fish. Vegetables and fruits are best tolerated cooked ,peeled, de-seeded, and pureed. Do not try them raw. Keep a food diary and advance very slowly. Pureed zucchini with basil as seasoning is a delicious soup. You can add salt and SCD yogurt in the bowl before eating it which makes it creamy. Pecanbread.com is a good guide but you don't have to be non dairy (legal) if you tolerate it. This is a website for kids with ASD who use SCD. For some reason- many of them react to casein, which many adults with gut issues tolerate. Sometimes adding foods is trial and error. Many people here have also noticed a hormone effect as well, but the birth control is adding to your quality of life and you will adjust to it. I noticed symptoms at menopause. I would try to find a legal vitamin, and also, with all you have been through, you are likely to be vitamin D deficient and you may want to have your doctor check that as well because you would need much more vit D to repair that than what is in a multivitamin pill. Best wishes for a quick recovery, PJ > > > > Hi there! > > Glad to be joining the group. > > My background: 26 yo, Day 14 on SCD, diagnosed with CD 5 weeks ago, > > currently on 4.8 g/day asacol, 6 mg/day entocort, 850 mg/day iron, and > > my regular multivitamin (Women's Symmetry). Guest guest
Hi PJ, Thanks a lot. I think 'raw' is a good way to describe my insides right now. When the surgeon explained that the 'intestines of people with CD in the midst of a flare look like they've been put in a blender', all that pain from before seemed to make more sense. That zucchini soup sounds amazing! Basil, yum! I have a basil plant growing right by my stove. I tolerate a bit of applesauce each day, so I will try to make a new batch soon. Yay for fall and wonderful apples straight from the farm. I think my mom is planning on doing an applesauce making and canning day just for me, which is amazing. I agree that the bc is adding to my quality of life... stress about possibly getting pregnant is never fun. So far, I think the nuvaring's lower hormone dose isn't causing the same issues that the pill did, so that's a good sign! About the vitamins... I've visited the GIprohealth and the Freeda site but still feel a bit too confused to place an order. Do you prefer one company over the other? Also, do you have a favorite SCD-legal probiotic? I purchased the Align probiotic before I started SCD and learned that bifidus can get too crazy in the gut. I immediately stopped taking Align but haven't found a replacement. Thanks for reading my long posts!! Guest guest
I made so many mistakes when I first started SCD, I decided to only order from digestive wellness online at first, so I would not mess up getting the wrong product. I ordered the Freeda Vitamins on their site. I use the GI prostart legal yogurt starter and their SCD- dophilus probiotic. Lucy's kitchen shop also carries legal items as well. There are other sources as well, but until I got better at reading labels and figuring out legal/illegal, I relied on these resources. Guest guest
Hi Joanna, Thank you! Interesting... the pecanbread stages list green beans as stage 2, while the spinach/zucchini are stage 1. The pecanbread site is full of info. I'm happy to learn that I'm not on the strict intro. I made a lot of the classic mistakes at the very beginning, like getting something labeled 'amish farmer cheese' at the grocery store, which was actually a hard cheese, then having worsened D/pain. Also, I didn't dilute the apple cider and grape juice in the first few days. Oops! The iron supplement is prescription oral, yikes. I mistakenly said 850 mg/day-- it's actually 650 mg/day. Now that I think of it, I ran out of the iron supplement this past Thursday, and Saturday is when my diarrhea started to improve. I'm not sure if the improvement was precipitated by the elimination of the yogurt or the iron, but it was probably one or the other (or both). While in the hospital and in the weeks after, I avoided blood transfusions by a hair. As of last week, my hemoglobin was up to 11.9 from a low of around 7 (yay). I did a google search and found a few articles that said parenteral iron is bad news (allergic reactions, lack of absorption, etc.). They should make an iron " patch " like the nicotine patch! Haha. Have you heard of other people getting their iron levels up without oral supplements? There is no iron in the Women's Symmetry multi by Vitanica. The bottle label seems promising: " This product contains no preservatives, binders, artificial colorings or flavorings, sucrose, glucose, starch, lactose, salt, corn, wheat, gluten or milk derivatives. Other ingredients: vegetable cellulose and water. Vitamin E is from soy. " Full list of ingredients: http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/Womens-Symmetry-by-Vitanica_p_1639.html I'm getting toward the end of the bottle and would like to switch to a fully SCD-legal multi if my current vitamin has illegal ingredients, but the vitamin info out there is confusing. It also sounds like I should add in D, B complex and calcium. I noticed the Freeda B complex vitamin has added zinc, so if I double that up with the multi (which also has zinc), that makes me wonder if I need so much zinc. I'm also on the hunt for a legal probiotic, and would love brand suggestions. I was about to refill my oral iron prescription today, but I'm rethinking it now that I see the diarrhea-iron connection. Thanks for catching that. Guest guest
I didn't realize that Digestive Wellness was a fully SCD-legal site. Lovely. I'm going to order the SCD-dophilus and the GI prostart. The GI prostart is quite a deal! Ordering the yogourmet starter on amazon would be $2.10/quart vs. 38 cents/quart from the GI prostart. Wonderful! By the way, is it better for me to reply to the whole group or just to the member that responds to me? Seeing pure turmeric on the Digestive Wellness site makes me think that I need to look at all my spices, even if they aren't mixes. Guest guest
Wow, that all sounds amazing! Especially the almond butter candy... I checked out your blog, yum! I am putting coconut oil on my list of things to try with the SCD. I've used coconut oil in place of butter when making empanadas in the past. The smell of the heated coconut oil is intoxicating. I saw cocoa butter on the Digestive Wellness site just now. Do you tolerate cocoa butter pretty well? Interesting, because cocoa powder is definitely illegal but perhaps cocoa butter is not.... These " white chocolate " candies made with coconut butter look scrumptious: http://www.comfytummy.com/2010/02/15/scd-white-chocolate-candy/ How is the coconut yogurt experimentation going? Do you also use coconut flour instead of almond flour? (Baked goods might be a long ways away, but hey - a gal can dream!) BTW, that honey hut you featured on your blog is SO cute! The moment I saw it, I thought... wait, is this blog based in Oregon? Haha. I lived in Portland for 4 months last summer. My sister lived in Portland for 3 years. Guest guest
Hi Grace- you are very welcome! Another great part of the pecanbread website it how they have recipes broken out by stages. I loved getting ideas- who knew you could make a " bread " out of chicken and eggs? Don't get too down about your mistakes- if these are the only ones you make, you are in good shape! If you talk to anyone who's been on the diet for a year, I bet you'll find that we've all made mistakes the whole time. Sometimes I'll find out a month later that I did something wrong! It's so frustrating, but it's just the learning curve. Luckily, we an all make progress despite these small transgressions... Anemia is a really tricky thing- we talk about it a lot in this group. I think the main consensus seems to be that the number one priority should be to try to eat foods high in iron instead of taking oral supplements (beets, liver, etc.). I think the main argument for not taking the oral iron (aside from the obvious that it feeds the bad bacteria) is that if you can let the diet work and heal your gut, then you will begin to absorb it again and keep your levels healthy naturally. However, some of us (me included!) just get too low on our levels and have to turn to iron transfusions, shots and blood transfusions. I know how frustrating it is for you to hear that there isn't any good answer In the end, we have to make decisions that best keep us healthy so maybe you could try eating iron rich foods (and not take the supplement) and just see where that goes... If your levels start dropping you may have to start thinking of alternative ways to keep them up. (LOVE the iron patch idea by the way- I want one!) Your multivitamin looks good! I can't approve it, mind you, but there is nothing that looks sketchy in it. Marilyn would say that it's up to you if you decide to use it, but if you stop seeing progress you may want to switch to an " approved " vitamin. Many of us get our probiotics, s boulardii and yogurt starters from this site: http://www.giprohealth.com/ You can also find the Freeda approved vitamins at: http://www.digestivewellness.com/ (although you can google Freeda and find them on many other sites as well). Keep asking questions- it'll only make this overwhelming process a little easier -Joanna > > Hi Joanna, > > Thank you! Haha. It also sounds like I should add in D, B complex and calcium. Guest guest
Still don't eat winter squash but I did fine with yellow and zucchini squash. Maybe it is younger so easier to tolerate. Guest guest
Wow - thanks for sending that SCD White Chocolate link my way - YUMMY - YUMMY! I will totally try that one next. I may have given up dairy - but still sneak in a lil' butter. I just started using the coaco butter too, and heard others talking about using it on this list - so I am pretty sure it's legal, but no other coaco/chocolate products are. I actually eat a lot of almond flour pastries, not too big on coconut flour yet - did make a loaf of coconut bread this past weekend, but it's so fiberous and absorbent, it like drys my mouth out just eating a slice If you eventually go the almond flour route, and if you own a good food processor or (spice/nut dedicated) coffee grinder, then I highly suggest grinding your own from slivered or even whole almonds. I find this to be a lot cheaper, closer to $3.50/pound, and better tasting! But alas, it's all personal opinion. Glad you got a chance to stay in Portland - really is a neat city, we are in the process of buying a house near the Oregon Coast - should be closing on it this week - right in the heart of wine country & all the farms. I am very excited about it! It's on some acerage with a fruit tree orchard, blueberry bushes, & grapes. We just tried some yummy local grapes off the vine yesterday - and I have my boyfriend planning to make a fruit press for apple cider, grape juice, wine & such - can't wait! This will make the SCD diet even easier to stick too! I wish you the best with SCD! My advice is to just totally pamper yourself when you can, take the espon salt baths, drink lots of broths & soups, drink lucious smoothies, get lots of rest, and help let your body heal! - > > Wow, that all sounds amazing! Guest guest
I don't think I'll be trying winter squash again for awhile! I bought a few zucchinis yesterday. My courage returned after receiving all the good tips and hearing the group's experiences, so yesterday I sauteed some spinach with garlic and ate a few bites. I don't seem to have had any reaction, though things are still a little " off " from eating too many banana-egg pancakes two nights ago. Nevertheless, it was exciting to eat my first few bites of a green veggie! I have read a lot of the pecanbread site: it's wonderful. The page on motivation really helped develop my initial resolve to start the diet. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi Grace – > > > > > > > > I also had issues with acorn squash and completely understand > > how intimidating a new food (or supplement!) can be! Guest guest
3.50/pound would be lovely. A few more questions about the almond flour-making process. Do you blanch the almonds and squeeze off the skins? I have a cuisinart food processor- would a few short pulses prevent the flour from turning to butter? Lastly, where do you source slivered and/or whole almonds at such a great price? The lowest I can find is 6.99/lb at my local health food store. I know Costco's Kirkland brand is really well-priced, but unfortunately there isn't a Costco store anywhere near me. =) I really do love making my own stuff, but I can also totally see myself with too little time to do all the steps. That said, I used to bake my own sourdough bread- and that is pretty time consuming, but beyond worth it! Wow, Oregon Coast! What a beautiful place to buy your home. I'm excited for you and your hubby. The fruit seasons of the NW were amazing. I always put 'pampering' on the lower end of my list (don't we all sometimes?), so thanks for the reminder. The acupuncture treatments I've started have felt very healing! The acupuncturist is pretty amazing. ty! Grace > > > > Wow, that all sounds amazing! Especially the almond butter candy... Guest guest
Thanks for the clarification. I'm still going to switch to the GI Prohealth SCD multi. I'm also hoping that my other Vitanica vitamin is SCD-legal, but can you check the ingredient's list? It has done *wonders* for various PMS symptoms. I take it only on Days 14-28 of my cycle. They also make Women's Phase II for menopause. (I know there are a lot of dudes on the forum too, so you can probably just skip this post!) This was sold to me direct from a naturopath, and it was probably the best thing she gave me! " Women's Phase I Supplement Facts: Serving size 2 capsules; Ingredients per serving: Vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopheryl succinate) 200 IU; Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal-5-phosphate) 25 mg; Calcium (as citrate-malate) 50 mg; Iodine (from kelp) 75 mcg; Magnesium (as citrate-malate) 100 mg; Chromium (as picolinate) 100 mcg; Borage seed oil extract 150 mg; Wild yam root 100 mg; Dandelion leaf 100 mg; Dong quai root 100 mg; Passion flower extract 100 mg; St. 's wort tops 100 mg; Chaste Tree berry 50 mg; Chaste Tree berry extract 25 mg; Ginkgo extract 15 mg. Other ingredients: Vegetable cellulose and water. Women's Phase I is suitable for vegetarians. This product contains no preservatives, binders, artificial colorings or flavorings, sucrose, glucose, starch, lactose, salt, corn, wheat, or milk derivatives.
