Guest guest
Samara - I'm pre-op too, and this subject has been on my mind too. I am having both upper advancement and lower set-back surgery next year. I discussed this with my OMS, who is also a board-certified Cosmetic Surgeon. He says the changes are usually swelling-related, and once the swelling resolves itself, the nose returns to normal, but there are always exceptions. He is not very concerned that my nose will be altered permanently from the upper surgery, but if the swelling goes away and my pug nose remains a " Miss Piggy " nose, he says he will fix it. Actually, I hate my nose anyway, and told him a Rhinoplasty might be in my future; he told me that he likes my nose and really doesn't want to alter it, unless the upper surgery causes it to change. I trust my OMS and his judjment concerning this; he told me not to worry about it and I'm trying hard not to. Hope this helps ease your mind, even just a little bit. ~~ Diane (Idaho) > > I've heard about this happening a lot, and I am very worried about it. > I don't want to go have rhinoplasty after this whole thing is over, but > if I end up hating my nose, then I will. Guest guest
Hi Samara, I am thinking it is something that is more common with upper surgery. I was told from the outset that I will require a rhinoplasty for breathing following the jaw surgery recovery period. They will be doing a lower septoplasty with the upper and lower surgery, then a second surgery will be performed later to open the upper passage. It will be covered by insurance. Since it is a covered procedure, it can also be a cosmetic reconstruction as well. I am going to request this when I go in for my consults about it. What I am getting at, is that it is an important question to bring up with your OMS. They will be aware of how much must be moved, and if that movement will adversely impact your nose appearance in a more major way. I would want to know too. Please let us know what you find out! Guest guest
Hi Samara, my nose slightly widened after I had my jaw widened - so slight that I didn't really notice it until I looked at pictures about a year after my surgery. My nose is slightly turned up since my upper/lower jaw surgery - although I'm still swollen in my nose area, so I'm hoping once the swelling is gone completely my nose will go back to normal. Anyway....I think you should talk to your surgeon about it - maybe he has some good before & after shots of other patients he can show you. > > > > I've heard about this happening a lot, and I am very worried about > it. > > I don't want to go have rhinoplasty after this whole thing is > over, but > > if I end up hating my nose, then I will. Guest guest
Hi Samara, I had double jaw surgery- my upper was moved up, the cant was corrected, the midline was rotated, and it was expanded. I did not observe any change in my nose. My surgeon said that it might look different/wider post op due to swelling, but even then I observed no difference. I am presently 8 months post op. My nose is the same as ever.
