Guest guest
Hi Diane, I hope your appointment went well for you today, and that you are not too worse for the wear! I had an adjustment today, so am sitting here after having taken some advil. And I think there is a wire edge on the back of my left upper bracket!! OUCH! Anyone know how to fix that?? My OD office is closed tomorrow for Veterans Day! Did you have to have the xray taken? I have the same problem as you in that they are moving the upper and lower forward and my tongue is too large for my mouth. I am so excited for you!!! I can't wait to hear what your OMS decides to do. Good luck! Hugs, Fran > > Hello, Tomorrow I am getting the spacers removed from between my 1st > and 2nd molars and my 2nd molars banded. Guest guest
Fran - Hello there! Well, I survived my Ortho appointment. They put the bands on the 2nd molars (ouch!), took a Cephalometric xray, and a set of molds (yuck- almost gagged!) were done. They will be brought over to Dr. by the beginning of next week, for his viewing pleasure. I also got new wires - this time I have #18's - " NiTi's " (nickel-titanium)- on both the top and bottom. My OD and his assistant asked me if I wanted to drop down a wire # or if I wanted to continue at my current pace and get a higher wire #; I said I wanted to progress to the next #'s - " No pain, no gain " . My OD is very happy with my enthusiasm and with my progress. My mouth is a little bit sore right now, but I plan to go home and have some wine for " medicinal purposes " , and get some TLC from my little Sweetie- pie, who is my pet cat. She always seems to know when her Mommy needs to be comforted.// So, how was your adjustment? What did your OD do - change your wire for another higher #? Do you have powerchains yet?// I have powerchains on both the top and bottom; they are great at closing up any gaps, and they add more pressure to the continuous force wires. The " crowns " problem still exists, but I think that my OD is hoping that Dr. will intervene once he sees the molds, and ask my dentist to trim down the porcelain on the lingual side near the gumline. There are bumps on the bottom of the crowns that are interfering with my front upper teeth moving into alignment, but my dentist doesn't want to touch the crowns until after my braces come off. Ah, the joys of having this underbite; it will be so-o nice to have all this fixed. Hopefully Dr. will be doing both the lower set-back and the upper advancement on me; my appointment with him is Dec. 13th to finalize the procedures he will be performing on me next year. I hope he will be as pleased with my progress as my OD and I am; my OD says he should be thrilled, so we'll see.// Let me know how it's going with you, okay? Take care - the pain will fade away! ~~~~~ Diane (Idaho) > > > > Hello, Tomorrow I am getting the spacers removed from between my > 1st > > and 2nd molars and my 2nd molars banded. Guest guest
Hi Diane, I hope your medicinal wine worked well for you last night:)!! I took some Advil but was pretty miserable last night anyway. There is a wire at the back that is too long, but is in an area that is right next to the most mobile part of my back inner cheek, so that I have to keep reapplying brace wax that is rubbed off. I am sure it can be fixed with a simple snip at the OD office, but they are closed until Monday. So I will just have to keep wax on there this weekend. They moved me up from a 14/25 wire to a 19/40 (does that sound right? I know I have the first number correct, but am not sure about the second number on each set. lol The new wire is much thicker and is rectangular rather than round. It is putting a LOT of pressure on my teeth. I had a difficult time sleeping last night. But it will get better soon I am sure. Soft food for now. I don't have the powerchains on at this point. That sounds pretty intense!! They did mention bands yesterday, but I have another level to go with just wires at my January 3rd visit. They are going to do Pan xrays and molds then. I am hoping I am moving more rapidly than expected, but they didn't say that yesterday. I did get a gold star for keeping the braces clean though! Yeah!! I am pretty compulsive about it actually. I wish I could say it was due to diligence on my part, but it is really due to an inability to tolerate the feeling of anything touching the braces! lol Oh well.... I am looking forward to hearing what you find out on your Dec 13 OMS visit. I know you are anxiously awaiting that appointment too! I know I would be!! Will watch for your posts about it! Guest guest
Hi Fran- I have a question about your response. Does your ortho tell you those numbers for your wire? I am kind of confused-- are they for the size of the wire? I just let them do what they need to do and hope for the best! I don't ask too many questions. But I have an appointment next week with my OD and now that I have been on this site for a week, I have so much to ask him! I hope you can explain this better to me! Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Nikki, Yes they did tell me the numbers of the wires. They are the gauge, and the new one is thicker and is rectangular in shape rather than round like my last one. If they didn't tell me though, I would have asked, because it definately feels wayyyyyyyyyyyyy different with the new wires. The best part is that when they changed the wire out, I was able to use REAL FLOSS and it took like 25 seconds to do my whole mouth!!! Now I am really looking forward to being through the process! lol That was so amazing. Hugs, Fran > > > > Hi Diane, > > I hope your medicinal wine worked well for you last night:)!! Guest guest
I see, I guess that would be nice!! I don't have anything like that (although I REALLY wish I could floss easier than I do now, and yes, it takes FOREVER!!) Just the same old same old. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was a bit confused, as this is the second time I have had braces. Nikki > > > > > > Hi Diane, > > > I hope your medicinal wine worked well for you last night:)!! Guest guest
Hi Fran, I've been off and on this website for about a year now. I've had braces for a little over a year. I'm scheduled to have upper & lower jaw and chin surgery on Dec. 14th. Unfortunately, I don't get a chance to come to this website too often. Anyway, my ortho told me that if a wire was ever poking my gums that I could use finger nail clippers to snip it off. I haven't had to try it but I think it might work. I know, it's a small area to work with. Also,I'm not sure about the size of the wires. Is it possible to try to bend the wire a little bit? I'm actually in my sugery wire right now, which is really thick and I doubt it would bend. Good luck. Hope your mouth feels better soon. > > > > Hi Diane, > > I hope your medicinal wine worked well for you last night:)!! I > > took some Advil but was pretty miserable last night anyway. Guest guest
Fran - Yes, the medicinal wine did the trick, but its effects wore off by the morning, and oh boy, was the back of my mouth throbbing! Sounds like you need to snip off that excess length of wire. I can sympathesize about the pain you are feeling back there; the bands on my 2nd molars have little hooks that will be used at my surgery to attach my splint to, I think, and they are poking into my cheeks something fierce. I tried to apply wax on the worst offender, my right upper band hook, but the stuff refused to adhere. The wax I put on the right lower band's hook stayed for about an hour, then fell off and I swallowed it by mistake. So, I dabbed some oral pain meds on it, and so far it's doing the trick. The bands themselves don't bother me at all - it's those stupid hooks! Eating lunch at work today was a real joke; the food kept getting stuck in the hooks, and it hurt to chew back there, so I found myself taking a few feeble chews and then swallowing the food partially chewed. I hope it gets better soon, or I might have to eat soups and soft foods (sounds like a post-surgery diet?).// Wow, they really moved you up in wire #'s! I think the " 40 " should be " 25 " , but that's quite a jump in wires - 14's to 19's - I'm impressed! The #17 I had last time was one of those rectangular ones, but other than that, mine I all round. You know, now I'm wondering about something: are all the odd-numbered wires rectangular, and round ones even-numbered? (Could it really be that simple?) Oh, and Fran, you ARE moving faster than they expected, and if your OD is like mine, probably won't tell you because he hasn't gotten " clearance " from your OMS to devulge that info to you yet. I think my OD must think that I'm a pain in the ---, because I am always trying to get him to tell me something, anything really, about my progress. The fact that my wires are changed to a higher # every time I go for an adjustment, and that my Cephalometric xray and molds were moved up a month tells me that my OMS (Dr. ) is very curious about my progress. The only thing my OD told me was that IF my teeth continue to move at the pace that they have, I might get my surgery moved up, but by how much, he couldn't speculate. And he made me promise not to tell Dr. that he had told me that. I think that they don't want to get our hopes up.// Well, have a nice weekend, and hang in there - the pain should be better by Monday! ~~~ Diane (Idaho) > > > > > > > > Hello, Tomorrow I am getting the spacers removed from between > my > > > 1st > > > > and 2nd molars and my 2nd molars banded. Guest guest
Hi Diane, Did you have hooks on your braces before they put those surgical hooks on? I have had sets of fairly long hooks on my braces from the start. They collect EVERYTHING! Ugh! And they jab into my cheeks, and took a long time to get used to. Even now, if I talk a certain way or chew something wrong, they catch my cheeks and smart. They had to put a certain kind in because I am allergic to latex, and so they have to use vinyl bands instead. If they are like other vinly substites for latex, they are not as stretchy and have to be thicker to do the same job. I don't know, because I haven't had bands used yet. But you saying that you think I am moving quicker than they were expecting is music to my ears!! I know what you mean about trying to extract any kind of hint about how the progress is. I feel the same way you do about them not wanting to discuss the progress outright. You may be right about them not wanting to get our expectations up too early. That is great news that you think I am moving quicker than expected. I am going to hold on to that! lol And in the upper left corner for me, I am having the same problem with the wax adhering too. I got some Extra chewing gum for the daytime, and just keep it kind of pocketed there. I was worried that it would stick to my braces, but so far, so good. It makes cleaning them out a bit of a problem, sort of like cheese getting caught there, but it doesn't stick like I was afraid it would. I just get the sugar free kind of gum. My cheek is pretty raw back there. I would clip the wire, but it is the end of the wire that sticks through the last bracket. I don't have a tool that would clip the wire end in that location. I am going to pop in at the OD office on Monday to get it clipped. I can't wait! I hope you have a great weekend. You are getting so close Diane. I am feeling the excitement of it too! Guest guest
Hello, Fran - Well, my cheeks are really raw right now, and I have a splitting headache too. The only hooks I have had are the ones that are a part of the brackets, and they are on the bicuspids ? I think. These hooks that I now have on the bands (ones on the 2nd molars) are a part of the band itself, and I don't think that they are the actual surgical hooks that are put on the surgical wires prior to surgery. I'm not that close to my surgery yet! No, these are part of the bands; in fact, they cut the hooks off the bands they put on my 1st molars as they weren't necessary. But, I guess these hooks are a necessary part of the surgical process. It sounds like I'm the only patient who ever asks any questions at my OD's office, because they don't seem to know how to answer my questions. It seems that the more I ask, the less they actually tell me. They talk alot about my teeth needing to be " leveled " - does that mean they all need to be the same height? How do they tell if your teeth's roots are aligned in the arches, besides by xray? I sometimes feel like a pest because I ask so many questions, but they tell me to feel free to ask questions. They put those bands on the 2nd molars and told me that they needed to get into alignment with the rest of my teeth, but when I look into my mouth all my teeth look pretty well lined up. I don't get it; all I do know is that my chewing has become a real joke. I guess this is a good time to lose weight, because eating is getting just too hard to do. And, just what I suspected: the OD's office would be bringing my Ceph xrays and the new set of molds to my OMS by the beginning of this week. I knew they didn't want ME to transport them as my OMS knows that I can read xrays very well [as a Cytotechnologist, I have 25+ years experience assisting Radiologists w/FNA(FineNeedleAspirate) Biopsies and know how to read all kinds of xrays] and, if given the chance, doesn't want me to look at my Ceph's and draw my own conclusions. The chewing gum seems like a great idea, but the odds of it sticking for good and my not being able to get it off, and then getting busted by my OD for using it in the first place seems more likely. If my cheeks continue to be as tender and raw as they are right now, I will be calling my OD's office for suggestions, as they are responsible for putting these retched things on me in the first place. Yes, I so-o want to believe that I am getting close to my surgery, and will be completely shocked if Dr. moves up my surgery month any earlier than April, but I doubt he will. My OD told me last month that I have quite a ways to go, which really depressed me, as I was expecting him to tell me just the opposite. I guess all you and I can really do is be there for each other and help each other to just hang in there. Thank you, Fran, for being there! Hope you had a nice weekend! Write back when you can. ~~~~ Diane > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello, Tomorrow I am getting the spacers removed from > between > > > my > > > > > 1st > > > > > > and 2nd molars and my 2nd molars banded. Guest guest
Hi Diane, Those are the same hooks that I have had since day one! I totally feel for you! I have 5 sets of the darn things on each side. That is 20 of the little hummers all together! I have gotten used to them, but they did take an extreme amount of getting used to, and I had to go in to have some wires trimmed too. The only brackets I don't have the hooks on are the very front ones. Food gets caught in there with every bite, and I mean chunks that sometimes I have to clear before I can take another bite. I can't imagine how fun they are going to be when they do some of the vinyl banding with them also. Maybe that is why I have become such a compulsive brusher/flosser now. lol I am glad you are going to call today. For me, some of the worst irritation was from small bits of wire that I couldn't even see in the mirror myself, but that were tearing my cheeks up. That is why I am calling today about the wires on the right side that were just put in Thursday. I can't see the wires, but I don't want to put up with them to see if my cheeks just toughen up. I lost some weight early on, but when they were so sore I couldn't eat anything that required any chewing (still have a tough time, as the bite plate prevents my teeth from touching on any surface but the front two upper and lower teeth), but I am now able to eat soft foods, such as spagetti, spanish rice, mashed potatoes, ice cream, and pudding. DH was being so attentive, he started bringing me milkshakes! lol I finally had to tell him that not only did I have nearly two more years in the braces, that I didn't want the added limitiation of being unable to hoist myself off the couch! lol Seriously. I have had to start limiting my calorie intake severely. Many of the softer foods are also higher in carbs and calories. So I am getting more creative with my selections. I am getting a baby food grinder like I had for the kids when they were toddlers. Then I can order/make pasta/meat dishes with chicken and not just ground beef. I haven't been able to chew chicken unless it is in 1/4 " bites, and then I basically just flatten them and swallow them more or less unchewed. Sorry for the graphics here, but I hope this might be giving you some ideas you can use. Hope you have a great day today too! I am calling my OD at 7:30AM on the dot. Hugs, Fran > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello, Tomorrow I am getting the spacers removed from > > between > > > > my > > > > > > 1st > > > > > > > and 2nd molars and my 2nd molars banded.
