Guest guest
Hi Everyone Have been reading some of the posts here for the last couple of weeks. I hope you all will bare wth me here hope i don't babble too much. My son will be 15 in a couple months have been taking him to local Dentist for the last 2 years for teeth cleaning the dentist doesn't talk to you but the nurses there had told me that dentist wanted me to take him to an ortho. I knew he had an underbite but the last year or so I could tell it was getting worse so August 16th I took him to an ortho I knew when the ortho said 3? and the nurse asked him to repeat I could see it in her face that he would need surgery. Well of course I broke down crying I know I should have tryed to be strong but my son told me he knew I would cry. I had heard horror story's about breaking jaws and wiring mouth shut. The Ortho explained to me that my son would have to have braces and that he would possibly have to have wisdom teeth out first. and that everything would have to be timed just right that the surgery could not be done to early in case my son had a growth spurt. I know if we do the braces there is no turning back. I have had anxiety attacks over this We had an appt. with surgeon today but was cancelled no Electricity because of the storm. I guess I Need just a little pep talk and reassurance. I am so glad to have found this web site. Teressa
Guest guest
, I am a product of underbite and it took me this long before I decided to go through ortho. It scared me before. Yes, it is a commitment but it will pay off after the ortho procedure and surgery is over. Now that I am fully an adult, I experience more problems with my jaw. I have alot of clicking, poping and locking in my jaw. Please consider your son to be treated early at this young age. My boss at work underwent a orthognathic surgery when she was 15. According to her, young people heal and/or recover faster than adult. Do not wait till he turns an adult. It will improve his looks and confidence. You are the mother, decide what is best for him. Everything will be fine. teressact wrote: Hi Everyone Have been reading some of the posts here for the last couple of weeks. I hope you all will bare wth me here hope i don't babble too much. Guest guest
Hi Teressa, I'm 21 and I just had my overbite fixed on July 23 by having my bottom jaw broken and moved forward. I was wired shut for 4 weeks and rubberbanded shut for 2 (I get them off this Friday). When I found out that I needed surgery in order to fix my much-hated overbite, I cried too. Right there in the orthodontist office. I thought that I'd only need braces. Having my mouth wired shut sounded like something out of a horror movie to me. BUT..I went through with it, just like a lot of people in this group, and with the support of my family (and my friends here), I've been able to push through the hard parts of recovery. The worst, in my opinion, is the liquid diet. But I keep telling myself this isn't forever. This surgery certainly requires patience, determination, and strength and you are certainly a very supportive mom so I know if your son does have the surgery, you'll be there for him. Guest guest
Yep you sure are replying correctly. Tell your son that the milkshakes *are* delicious. Know what I have basically lived off of? Milkshakes from Maggie Moo's and Coldstone Creamery. Not sure if you have either of those where you live, but you can take any of their ice cream flavors and make them into milkshakes...Cake Batter flavored, Oatmeal cookie flavored..you name it, they have it. I think the people working there probably know me by name now. -Ash
Guest guest
I am about to get my braces and start on this road to surgery. My son is 14 and has braces. At this point the ortho is hoping to correct w/ braces and says that we will see how things go as he grows. I have a class III malocclusion and he has a class II. I know what you mean. The thoughts of him having to go through this breaks my heart. On the other hand, I did not have treatment when I was younger and I would not want him to have the problems I am having now. A friend's 13yr old daughter had it done and did beautifully. Being a mother is the hardest job in the world. We feel all their pain and fears. Best of luck to you and together you will make the right decisions.
