Guest guest
Pip,I have adrenal issues. I also have thyroid issues, but I do not suffer from CD/UC/IBS. If you have adrenal fatigue, you are most likely suffering from hypothyroid symptoms as well. Cortisol is needed to get your thyroid hormones into your cells. If there isn't enough cortisol, then not enough thyroid hormones are getting into your cells and your metabolism is slowing down. To make matter worse, your body will detect the circulating, unused thyroid hormones and presume that you are making too much and down regulate your thyroid hormone production. Your mood swings and crying outbursts/emotional responses are a classic symptom. I would add more salt into your diet and eat things high in potassium (salt is needed in the cells and potassium is needed outside the cells to keep the sodium in the cells) like bananas if you can tolerate them. Since your doctor found the adrenal fatigue, see if he can recommend some vitamins that would help support it. There is a good book called 'Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome' which is really informative and gives ideas of how to help your adrenal glands. There is his site as well : http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/AmeliaFrom: pipparoni To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Tue, September 7, 2010 9:53:53 AMSubject: adrenals issues and nutrritonal yeast Hi I'm a newbie here. Am doing SCD because I have had horrible digestive issues all my life starting with colic and gastric enteritis when I was a small child And constant allergies espcially to wheat and milk. Although I don't have Colitis or anything quite so bad I do suffer from Fatigue and have had test to show that I have Adrenal Fatigue. I suffer from a lot of gas and bloating and have had these issues for around 14 years now since my gut flora was probably wiped out with antibiotics for acne which i was on for 6 years from 19-25. I am wondering if anyone else here is dealing with adrenal issues which also cause major mood swings and crying outbursts for me. I have problems with most foods, seem to be ok with meats, broths, a little fruit, honey, avocadoes egg yolks and a little sauerkraut but can't seem to digest most other veggies. Goats Cheese is ok in small amounts but I get a runny nose if I consume it too regularly. Guest guest
He may say that bananas are the worst thing to eat in the morning, but for thirty years I have been totally unable to eat anything but fruit before 11AM, and I truly must have banana as part of that as it's the most filling, long lasting fruit I've found. To me, (and I've read the book, too), the adrenal exhaustion, which leaves us as wiped out when we wake up as when we went to bed, or more, means the body just cannot handle that good protein breakfast we are " supposed " to have. A year or so on the diet and -- on a very good day --I am just getting to where I can handle maybe some chicken soup earlier. I don't eat salt with my fruit but I salt to taste on everything else. Some days I notice I want a lot more than others. Thanks Amelia, Yes I have read his book. How do you eat the bananas? with salt? I know he says fruit is one of the worst things to eat in the morning. thanks for your reply Pip
Guest guest
Pip,My body really needs that electrolyte boost in the afternoon/evening for some reason. You could put it in a smoothie. There are SCD electrolyte recipes that have been posted, so I would use that as a base for a chilled, cooked fruit smoothie in the afternoons, adding honey if you can tolerate it, to overcome some of the saltiness. Banana are good for making a thicker smoothie. I always add coconut oil or butter to make it richer as well. I think the book mentions taking the salt first thing in the morning is best, though. The other things that I remember from the book are to get some exercise, but not strenuous, to help relieve stress, to get plenty of rest, and to be in bed by 10:30 at the latest and asleep by 11pm -- cortisol gets a little blip at that time and you don't want to be awake and get a 'second wind' like I was doing. I couldn't sleep until after 1-2 am if I was up too late. You probably know this one, but make sure you eat at regular times as skipping a meal or delaying one will stress the adrenals too.If your situation is really bad, you can 'rest them' by taking dessicated glandulars. I would ask your doctor about it. The ones I use are Isocort. It gives a standardized amount of cortisol at physiologic doses, not high pharmacological doses, so that the adrenals have one less thing to make and your body gets what it needs. It doesn't require a prescription. I take 8 tablets a day: 3 first thing in the morning, 3 at about 11:30 a.m. and then 2 at 4 p.m. I am currently reducing now because I think my adrenals are recovering a bit. I think it best, though, to ask your doctor before trying them.AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, September 8, 2010 1:35:38 AMSubject: Re: adrenals issues and nutrritonal yeast Thanks Amelia, Yes I have read his book. Guest guest
I've had weak (now worse than that) adrenals nearly all my life. My understanding is that you don't just go from normal to fatigued, but rather than the whole cortisol " schedule " during the day gets wonky. In other words, you may make too little at one time of the day and too much at another, or you might just make too much (usually from stress, I think). Making too much, or a crazy schedule sets you up for further exhaustion down the line. I haven't read the book in some time so cannot quote that to you. But there's a test called the ASI test, which rather than being a one-shot blood test, tests saliva levels at four times during the day. You do it at home and it's the simplest test imaginable, and mail the little vials in to the lab. You get back (or rather, your doctor does) a chart showing both the levels at each testing time and a graph of the whole day. It can tell one quite a lot. Does anyone know anything about producing TOO MUCH cortisol? My adrenals aren't necessarily " fatigued " , as much as my body never ceases to produce cortisol (so I'm constantly stressed --- in " flight or fight " syndrome). Does this book talk about this as well? Rather than just " never producing cortisol " ?

Guest guest
Oh yea, wanted to add - when eating for adrenal fatigue it is recommended that you have a protein, a carb and a fat at each meal. Magnesium/Vits A, B, D, E/Evening Primrose, Fish, Olive, and Other Oils, Lecithin. 2 grown kids recovered from serious developmental problems which I believe were fungally-caused. > Hi I'm a newbie here. I suffer from a lot of gas and bloating and have had these issues for around 14 years now since my gut flora was probably wiped out withantibiotics for acne which i was on for 6 years from 19-25. I am wondering if anyone else here is dealing with adrenal issues which also cause major mood swings and crying outbursts for me. I have problemswith most foods, seem to be ok with meats, broths, a little fruit, honey, avocadoes egg yolks and a little sauerkraut but can't seem to digest mostother veggies. Goats Cheese is ok in small amounts but I get a runny nose if I consume it too regularly. Also do people know if Nutritional Yeast is SCD freindly I'm not seeing it in the list Thanks Pip. Guest guest
I took a lot of brewer's yeast back when they told us how marvelous it was for us, and I quite agree that it probably caused many of us a lot of problems. Or set us up for them later. I think the stuff is just a by-product of the beer industry or something so I suspect now it's one of those situations where they were trying to think of a way to sell something they'd otherwise toss in the garbage (and should, IMHO). I took scads of nutritional (aka brewer's) many yeast years ago before I caught on to the fact that it was actually CAUSING a huge amount of my - and as a result of taking it when I was pregnant and nursing -- my #2 kid's problems!! It may be full of nutrients but IMHO should NOT be consumed as food!!! Artful Carol
