Guest guest
Is making raw milk yogurt legal, following all of the SCD yogurt protocals, but only heating the milk to 110? I am planning to have my CD son start this diet soon and we have always used raw milk and raw milk products. Thank you, AShley
Guest guest
Making it from raw milk is legal- but it is usually advised to heat the milk to 180 (therefore killing any harmful bacteria). However, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what 110 would do... I would imagine there is a reason why we heat to 180. What qualities are you trying to preserve in the milk by not heating it up all the way? I hope Marilyn can come up with a more scientific answer than me- she usually does! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 20mg Prednisone > > Is making raw milk yogurt legal, following all of the SCD yogurt protocals, but only heating the milk to 110? In general, because of the length of fermentation on SCD yogurt, it is better to go ahead an pasteurize the milk for yogurt in the early stages of the diet. We want to be sure we're not inadvertently fermenting additional bacteria in there. If you choose to do raw yogurt per SCD parameters except only heating to 110F, and you do not see the improvement you hope for from SCD, consider doing things EXACTLY the way Elaine's instructions say. Later, after healing has taken place, you can potentially return to doing SCD yogurt as raw milk yogurt. I would certainly continue using all the other raw milk products you are using, if they are not otherwise SCD legal. If I had a reasonable source for them, I would love to use them, myself. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
