My

experience has been that yes, you can develop a sensitivity to soup, or to one

or more of the ingredients in soup. I have developed a sensitivity to

soups and broths, after eating nothing but soups and broth for 8 months during

my diagnosis quest and early weeks on SCD. My body’s reaction isn’t

quite the same as yours (nausea followed by hives and respiratory distress).

I couldn’t believe it could be the soup/broth at first, but it became

clear it was the culprit. I experimented for months, taking out one

ingredient after another. My body still reacted even when using just meat

and water with no other ingredients! I tried chicken, turkey and fish and

vegetable (can’t do beef) – same reaction every time.

Finally

I gave up on soups and broths as a frequent item on my menu. My body will

tolerate soups and broths but only if I limit my consumption to once a week, or

better, once a month. So I still make soup/broth, and use several

ingredients to make it tasty, but after one serving I freeze it in individual

portions and have it just once in a while.

When

I’ve had to fall back to clear liquids for a day or two since developing

this soup/broth sensitivity, due to a severe upper GI symptom flare (my

disorders are functional), I just do without broth after one serving.

Rather frustrating, I agree.

Your

body might be reacting to the fat content in the soup, just as mine does.

Fat can trigger peristalsis, meaning the cramps and eventual bout of D. So

you might be successful with soups if you just have a cup/bowl once a week or

so.

I'm

stumped. I hate to toss a whole batch

of broth but I'm very hesitant to test this stuff again. I've never had this

problem with home-made chix soup before. Is it possible to develop an

intolerance to chix soup?? Maybe I left too much fat in the broth (though I did

skim it some)? Lawd knows, I eat a ton of chix and eggs (and I've been careful

to check the Lot #s on each carton to avoid the " bad " eggs that were

coming out

of Iowa). Hate to think I'm developing an intolerance to chix products in

general, though I have noticed an increase in cramping after eating eggs on and

off over the past several weeks, but with no negative impact on stool. Anyone

else ever have trouble with broth?

thanks,

tom
