Guest guest
I sure hope I have such a recovery, keep us posted. I'm having the same thing but also lower jaw brought forward. Guest guest
Hello milk_girl10 - I also had my BSSO with a midline on 8/26. I've had a very similar recovery to yours so far, off pain meds since the end of day 3 and the swelling has gone down quite a bit compared to the beginning (Advil is my buddy now). I agree, the first 2-3 days are the worst! Quite a difference by day 4. The biggest problem I'm having now is feeling like I'm carrying around a weight on my neck from the residual swelling and fatigue. I get to start alternating with heat tomorrow, I'm sure that will loosen things up some. I'm assuming that by this time next week it'll all be much improved. I'm learning to adjust to my new bite, looking forward to a beautiful new smile! To try and get in a balanced diet, I'm also doing protein drinks and using my juicer for natural juices, plus thinned down oatmeal, yogurt, mashed beans, etc. (a little texture, but still no chewing). Good luck to you on your recovery.... Libby > Hello. > On Friday (8/26) I had Bilateral Sagittal Spilt Osteotomy with > mandible rotation. Guest guest
How do you take your Advil? I can't really open my mouth (I am banded but only have 2 bands on the side)I bought Childrens Tylenol (someone on a fourm recomended it)in liquid form. I haven't talked to my doctor since Friday, the day of the surgery, and when I left on Saturday I had talked to a different doctor (she was there though when they preformed the surgery) and she said that I couldn't ice it enough, then I was looking online and people were saying that their doctors said only to ice the first 24-48 hours then for like 2 days don't put anything on your face then start with heat. I see my doctor tomorrow so I will see what is up with that. I lost way to much weight also, I weighed in at 152 the day of surgery and now I am 145 lbs. so I need to eat stuff with way more calories. I have been eating as much as I can and I eat alot, so I don't understand why I am losing so much weight. I will also tell my doctor about that. I also i have that same feeling around my neck, it is annoying. My nose is also acting up. Do you brush your teeth yet? The doctors didn't tell me not to so I do with a childrens tootbrush and I also use the prescribed mouth wash the gave me after I brush (I brush after every meal and rinse). I know I cant wait also to see my beautiful new smile. Thanks for the help and info. milkgirl10 > > Hello. > > On Friday (8/26) I had Bilateral Sagittal Spilt Osteotomy with > > mandible rotation. Guest guest
I know the question wasn't directed towards me, but I have been taking liquid Advil for a while now (I'm banded shut). You can get it from the store..it's Children's Advil, or you can get a prescription for a higher dose. I have an 800mg Advil prescription due to some ear pain I've been having, but you just take the little dropper thing and put it in the side of your cheek. Good luck. -Ash
Guest guest
Last night I bought some Children's Tylenol. I hope that helps but the dosage is for children so I am not sure if I just double it by the weight..hmmm..if anyone know let me know! Thanks milkgirl10 > I know the question wasn't directed towards me, but I have been taking > liquid Advil for a while now (I'm banded shut). Guest guest
Hi milk_girl10 I have two bands on the side as well. I tried taking Children's Tylenol initally (plus crushing adult strength, yuck!) but couldn't handle the taste. I was told to brush with a baby toothbrush after every meal as soon as I was able (I can open my mouth enough - about an inch I think). So to take the Advil, I pour water in my mouth and hold it, tip back a bit and ease a tablet onto the top of my tongue, then lift my tongue so the tablet falls to the back of my throat with the water. Then it's easy to swallow, and I haven't felt I would choke or anything. I do one tablet at a time until I get a full dose. Advil are coated and small, so once I tried it it's been my method of choice. As for icing, I did ice nonstop for the first 72 hours (I was told it wouldn't be of much benefit beyond that). I was told to wait for heat until today, so I'll start with some alternating heat throughout the day. I'm ready for it, my neck and jaw are sooo stiff. I was also up last night with a pretty bad earache throughout the night, I think it has to do with " retraining " the jaw muscles. I'm going to call the nurse today and ask. Have you had ear or temple pain? My nose & ears constantly feel clogged. On the weight, I've lost about 6 lbs I think. I feel like I eat all the time too, but I know my portions are way smaller than normal, so I think it's just hard to get the calories in. Plus, your body is burning alot of energy trying to heal. The nurse told me to eat every three hours. I'm doing protein drinks and adding ground flax seed to my (thinned) oatmeal and stuff to get more bulk & vitamins in, trying to avoid " empty " calories. I can do no-chew foods (applesauce consistency), so I have a few more choices now. I'll be doing that for at least another couple weeks, so I'm looking for variety! This board has some excellent resources for meal ideas. Anyway, sorry to get so long on my reply. It sounds like we're traveling a very similar path! ) Good luck at the docs today, write back if you want to. Guest guest
Hi Libby, I went to my doctors today and he said all was well and switched out my bands that I had on for the last 5 days for ones that give a bit more so now I can open my mouth more. Yay! I took some advil today since I can open my mouth now a bit more. I also brush and rinse after every meal..they prescribed me Peri Dex rinse. He also told me that I could ice my jaw but it really wouldn't do much and that by the middle of next week my swelling should go down some what. I have also been experiencing an earache in my left ear and read that it might be due to the jaw joints since the jaw has been moved..all I know is I want it to go away and I forgot to metion it to my doctor so when I see him again next week I will ask him about it. Well take care and the best to you. milkgirl10 > > > > Hello. > > > > On Friday (8/26) I had Bilateral Sagittal Spilt Osteotomy > with > > > > mandible rotation. Guest guest
I had the EXACT same earache..in my left ear! That Advil 800mg prescription I mentioned to you before worked really, really well for that. I know how annoying and painful it can be though. I hope it gets better for you soon! -Ash

Guest guest
Hi milkgirl10 - I'm glad to hear you're feeling better! I had a bad day yesterday with the ear pain so I called the nurse - you're right, it's all about the joint's new position and the muscles spasming. She said to keep doing the heat and things would start to relax more, it's a very common symptom. I also massage my head and neck alot. I'm feeling better today, and the swelling seems to be decreasing more noticably (to me anyway) every day now. I'm sure part of my problem is I try to talk too much and then I pay the price at night! I've been using a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and water to rinse, but it's starting to irritate my mouth, I'm looking for a better solution. Maybe I'll check into that. Anyway, speedy recovery to you too - I'm off to eat my gourmet breakfast of thin oatmeal and ground flax seed...yumm!
