Guest guest
I have not worked much since surgery. I have been on disability. However, I was relieved when I finally left my last job. I hated the job loved the pay. For me, I did not have the energy to find another job so I stuck with the one I had. I also took the first job that came along for fear I would never find another job. Who wants to hire a fat woman anyway? I realized that the last job I had was NOT good for my self esteem. I'll give you a good example. I worked in customer service. FCC regulations state that you must give a customer one warning of inappropriate conduct before you hang up. Our company policy was that no matter how abusive the customer got, we were not allowed to EVER hang up. We were required to accept the cussing, the criticism, the foul mouths, etc. I think that the more weight I loose the better I feel about me and the better I feel about me the more I expect to be treated with respect. So, yes I think we change after surgery. Guest guest
Lori, What an awful way to spend your day...listening to people that are unhappy all the time. All the jobs I have had were actually ok...most of the time I just didn't have enough to do and was bored. I've been really lucky that the people are wonderful to work with which makes it hard to leave the job...but for some reason I seem to be looking for more. Guest guest
Karla, I can relate to your situation. I left a job in 10/01 after 7 years. Granted, I wasn't ecstatically happy, especially since I was having to battle the company's insurance. I wanted wls and after 9/11, I decided life was too short to spend it not getting what you want. So, I left, took a pay cut at a job working for a call center with the local gas company. I got my surgery within 5 months and lasted at that job through last December. I coudln't take it anymore because it was too stressful, so when offered a job, I jumped at it. I stayed on there part-time through February then quit altogether. I liked the job I got after that because it was in my field, graphic design, but it was kind of a step down from the job I had had for seven years. And, I was still not making as much money. Then, boom, two people got fired and my old employer called me to offer me my old job back with more money than when I left. So, back I came. I am happy to be back because it is familiar, but I find myself wanting something more. I am not going to look for another job because I have obligations here. Were it not for these obligations, I would be moving to D/FW and going back to school. But, life doesn't go the way I plan or wish it to, other than getting wls. I think restlessness is a symptom of a deeper issue. What that means for you I can't say because I don't even know what it means for me. When I figure it out, I'll let you know!! I think you should try to figure out what's behind your restlessness. Maybe you need a hobby that brings you fulfillment. I love to read and listen to music. I think this why I stay sane. Guest guest
Ugh, the job I got to get this surgery was for a local gas company with their call center. It was awful. We serviced areas all over the US, so we had people from Colorado, Louisiana, Kentucky etc always calling. People were horrendous to me and I never let them get me on their level. I got to the point where I would warn them to stop cussing, calm down, etc. or I would release the line. And I did it! I never would've done that before. I know that is because I learned to stand up for myself and could handle any type of person. I am relieved not to have to work in that job anymore. I loved the company, the benefits, but the job was not for me. I like sitting in front of a Mac, designing my horse ads and editorials and listening to the radio or a cd and not worrying about dealing with people on any level. I'm > beginning to wonder if I ever will be again. I can't speak to your satisfaction level, but I do know that I'm having a hard time finding work, and one of the problems is that the resume has so many short jobs on it -- I've primarily worked as a construction secretary, and when you finish a construction job, you tend to get laid off and have to go looking for other work. So in every interview, I'm hearing " why do you change jobs so frequently? " and it sounds like that's one of the strikes against me on finding something permanent. Is it possible to ask your supervisor for more responsibility, something that will challenge you? In the current job market, if you left and found you didn't like the new job, you might be sorry you left in the first place. There's not enough good work out there (as I so well know!) The other thing I might suggest is, find out what you really WANT to do, and take classes towards that at night, and then move into a whole new field. If you're not enjoying what you do, maybe it's not the job itself, but the KIND of job, that you're tired of. My 2¢ ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
, I had actually thought about doing something WLS related after I had surgery. Did discuss doing something like what you are doing with a friend but never did it. I've also thought about becoming a Nutritionist but would be full time school and can't do that right now. Guest guest
Ugh...it's ALL related to WLS. If we are not happy we tend to eat. Life is too short. Find something pleasing to you. A job that you enjoy getting out of bed for, not one that depresses you and sends you to the refrigerator looking for comfort. Hugs and Godspeed! Guest guest
Lyn, I agree with your observation on the short jobs and it not looking so good on the resume. Depending on your field, I would have a hard time getting hired if my resume showed a series of short time frame jobs. The reason is that potential employers do not see the stability of a longer term employment period. They figure, why go thru hiring and training a new person if they will just leave us for the next best offer to come along....Be careful of that.... Guest guest
A job is mainly a means to getting what you want in life. The grass is usually never greener unless you know exactly what will make you happy...such as starting your own business or switching careers to something more fulfilling. Have you tried to talk to your boss to see if you can get an increase in your responsibilities? It is really rare to be at a job that has " wonderful " people and also Great pay. Geez especially at this day in age hehe. That is my only concern on why you'd look elsewhere..you could easily go into another frying pan and have some regrets. If you already talked to your boss about upping your responsibilities and nothing is done, then I can understand. I always think it's good to work things out with the boss if it's possible than to jump ship. I tend to be more conservative on these things tho. I've worked many places and it's hard to replace a workplace that has good ppl in it. Guest guest
I've been doing medical transcription from home for almost 12 years so I could be home with the kids. Prior to that I set up and managed medical practices. Loved the work, but have no desire to go back into that field. Found myself restless when the kids went to school full time and felt their had to be more than being Tim's wife and and Leah's mother. Though nice and enough for some people, just not cutting the mustard for me. So, went back to school and now in my second year and loving every minute of it (well with the exception for five minutes when I had an argument with one of my professor's last week), other than that, besides the wls and tummy tuck, its the best thing I've done for ME in my adult life. Just my 2 cents worth. Regina
Guest guest
I've had some wonderful replys concerning changing jobs....I went on my interview today. The position sounds like the same thing I am doing now...maybe a little busier. I think what I have decided is that I need to change the type of job I have...maybe go back to school if I can find a way to do that. I like helping people and get fulfillment from that...maybe I need to explore how I want to help people. Thanks you so much for your thoughts. It has given me different ways of looking at my situation and sometimes all we need is a different perspective to point us in the right direction. Guest guest
I have to respond as I am now going through an interesting time... 6 weeks after I returned to work from my surgery I was let go. Said after 3 1/2 year of employment I was " universally disliked " . I will always believe that they were afraid of my surgery (it was 4 years ago TOMORROW) and very new then in this area. Next job I was in and out of in 6 months - dud company. Next job - 1 month - weird company - the owner would walk in every morning and announce on the PA system " God is here " nice...I left these two on my own accord. Next job - two years - assistant to the executive director of a synagogue. She retired and I had to go - new director wanted his own staff. Six months after his start he too is gone. Next job - assistant to VP of cell phone repair company -six months - major layoff - 30% of staff. Current job - since March. Friend of family owns the business. I am making a 60 - 90 min commute each way everyday. The promised that I would move to their Lansdale store (5 mins from my house) in Sept, then Nov, then x-mas, now after the first of the year. I don't love the work - I am processing title work for spoiled people who buy expensive cars. Well - start looking in a tentative way. I have found a wonderful company who processes third level medical reviews for insurance companies. The are totally non-biased and hire docs to write the reviews. They are currently doing tons of WLS and post WLS plastics cases...They love me and I love them - the problem - let's start with the $5,000 per year pay cut. Their bennies are less expensive and better, more vacation, better 401K match oh and did I mention they are 1 mile from my home????? My family (husband and parents) think I have lost my cork. I totally understand where you are coming from Karla... I think we are now looking for passion and are not as easily satisfied (we figured we were fat and that we were doing the best we could). Marjie Job changes - WLS related? Since WLS Surgery I have changed jobs several times....bored, not satisfied with what I am doing. I guess my question to everyone is...since surgery are you as happy with your job as you were before surgery....are you restless like me? My husband says I should just stay where I am because the pay is great and the people are wonderful...but I'm just not satisfied. I'm beginning to wonder if I ever will be again. Now I do have to say that my jobs before surgery were all long term 4- 5 years at each company....so don't know if my attitude has just changed since surgery or what. So what do you think? Guest guest
>> .They love me and I love them - the problem - let's start with the $5,000 per year pay cut. Their bennies are less expensive and better, more vacation, better 401K match oh and did I mention they are 1 mile from my home????? I'd be willing to bet the $5000 will be more than made up for with the lack of commuting costs, and the huge relief of stress -- there's a great deal to be said for less stress, no matter what the money situation. Course there's a lot to be said for employment -- I had an interview today (haven't worked since I was laid off on Halloween), and it's looking good... fingers are crossed for both of us! ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
Marjie, I say go for the job that will make you happy....even if it is a pay cut. Isn't that $5,000 pay cut worth your happiness? I haven't quite decided what I am going to do. I went on the interview yesterday and it went GREAT...didn't know what to tell my boss about leaving early so bad me lied and said the school nurse had called and I needed to pick up my son...I left this on his voice mail because he is out of town. My boss called back about 7:00 pm...he had just got the message. He called to see how my son was and since I have used up all my sick/vacation time, he said not to worry about it and take all the time I need, that we would worry about the timesheet later and it would not effect any vacation time I requested for later. Needless to say I felt awful. He is such a wonderful boss and what did I do but go behind his back for a job interview. So, right now I am hoping that the I don't hear back about the interview...that way I don't have to make the decision. Guest guest
> Is there any way you can state that the jobs were TEMP jobs of a finite > duration? When I worked as a consultant, some of my assignments were > notoriously short, and I had gone through 4 or 5 job changes in a > 2-year period. On my resume, I stated that I was a consultant > throughout the 2 year period, and I would list the various job > responsibilities that I held, rather than list each individual job. That's pretty much what I have done -- for example, all the jobs under a single temp agency are listed as one piece of the whole, with individual responsibilities described, but it looks like one employer (sort of). It does help that I was a Navy wife and can blame most of the moves on that, and that it is construction. When I had my interview FOR a construction job a couple of days ago, the guy wasn't the least bit surprised at the changes -- 2 major construction jobs each were about a year and a half, just what they should be. He was impressed with the kind of work I had done. Where I run into problems is in the non-construction world, especially city jobs, where people get hired and never leave, and they have a hard time seeing the value in lots of jobs. I see lots of jobs as lots of new experiences, they see it as job-hopping. This job that I'm interviewing for tomorrow is construction, but it's for Sound Transit, the folks who run the light rail and such in Seattle. So this could turn into something bigger over time, and could mean a permanent job eventually. Also, the construction consultant (the folks I would be paid by) is a woman-owned company, and pretty small (less than 50 people), so I might make some good contacts there who won't think it's odd that a woman loves construction as much as I do! LOL! Hanging on -- but still testing for another job this afternoon, just in case. ~~ Lyn
