Cori - Your pictures are absolutely wonderful! You have virtually NO

swelling at all - you are so lucky! I really enjoyed all your

pictures, the captions, and all the information you provided. I will

be having my surgery next summer, and seeing the before and after

pictures really helped me. Thank you! I have an underbite and will

definitely be having a BSSO for mandibular set-back, but my OMS isn't

sure if he will also be doing a LeFort (to advance and drop down my

maxilla) as well. It depends on the movement of my teeth, and he will

know more six months before surgery, which will be Dec. or Jan. I

just got my brackets on last Tues., and my spacers on this Tues. The

rest of my hardware gets installed next Tues.: bands, archwires, and

ligatures/o-rings. The spacers will be removed at the same time. Take

care and hope your recovery is going smoothly. ~~ Diane

I had my lower jaw pushed forward about 6-7 mm. Thank you for the

compliment you made my day. I cried all night last night because

some rude ladies at work told me I looked funny and worse. This

really hits the spot after you went through all that trauma.

THANKS AGAIN!

I certainly had a laugh over your inquiry!

I am sure your ortho and your surgeon have the required skill to let you know

what is going on with your teeth.........the cosmetic benefit is

ancillary..........

Thank you! I am glad you think I look okay. I hope my teeth fall

into place and everything works out. It's just hard when people tell

you rude things after all the trauma you go through.

Dear Lacey,

I am guessing that this is your name. My name is Lori and my 17

year old daughter will be having this same surgery. We have our consult

with the dentist later this month. My daughter is very much opposed to

even talking about the surgery much less having it. I was just

wondering how you went about choosing your surgeon. What hospital. How

long surgery was, how long you were wired and unable to eat and if you

have any regrets. I really appreciate your answers and your time. We

live in Cleveland. What hospital were you in?

Thank you...Lori Baraga

Lori,

I live in New Mexico so I went to a hospital in Albuquerque. I

actually got braces in December of 2003 and my orthodontist basically

knew that the surgery was needed. He recommended my surgeon to me as

they have done many cases together. For me this was a bit of a shock.

I knew I had a large overbite but I also had a decent chin so it was

not really noticeable. I tossed the option up in the air. My family

members didn't really agree with it as they didn't want me to mess

with my face. I talked to my orthodontist and I really didn't have

another option. He could try and pull teeth and shift my bite back but

I would look as if my face caved it. I finally decided to do it and I

have no regrets. The healing time and eating habits are not that great

but they are for a short amount of time compared to the rest of my

life. I am 20 and am glad I had the surgery when I did. I will try and

update my album for her and see if I can find some more before

pictures. My mouth is closed shut by rubber bands not exactly wires. I

can talk but eating is difficult. I can eat malt-o-meal or soup. All

surgeons are different but I am sure she will only be able to eat what

she can drink through her teeth. I am almost two weeks post op and my

surgeon is supposed to open my mouth a little more next week.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask. The thought of

surgery is scary. It seems to be cake compared to a lot of people who

have to do upper and lower. I fell really sorry for them. I think that

sounds pretty bad.

Lacey - Your pictures look wonderful! I hope I look as good as you

when I have my mandibular set-back surgery next summer; I'm Diane by

the way. I have an underbite and am 47 and I just got all my braces

hardware on today. Ignore those stupid people at work; I'm sorry that

you have to put up with such idiots. Take care and keep on healing as

well as you are doing. ~~~~ Diane

Lori - Sorry to barge into your conversation with Lacey, but I feel

compelled to write about your daughter's surgery. I live in Idaho and

I am a 47 year-old woman with an underbite that I have had for at

least the last 38 years of my life. My parents dragged me " kicking

and screaming " to an oral surgeon when I was a teenager and I, like

your daughter, was very much opposed to having any surgery. The

surgeon told my parents that the decision was MINE, not theirs, to

make. I am so grateful that the surgery wasn't done then (the

techniques have improved so much since then). That surgeon was

absolutely correct: the decision to have this life-changing and

serious surgery rests solely with the patient. Every parent wants

what's best for their children, but to make them undergo a surgery

that they are opposed to is wrong. In my case, I have started my

Orthognathic Journey and will be having my surgery next summer. I

want this surgery and I'm ready for this surgery - it's a personal

choice I've made for and by myself. I have the BEST OMS I could've

ever wished for; he's technically superb with an awesome bedside

manner. What I'm saying is this: it's your daughter's life and mouth,

and it's HER decision. I'm sorry if this is an unwelcome opinion.

DITTO!

I had the same experience. Went to an OS at age 19 with my parents,

cried my way out the door and didn't want to talk about it. I

didn't really want this surgery until now (at age 35). I had

upper/lower/genio and I am confident that my outcome is much better

than I would have had then and I was more prepared for the grueling

recovery. My life would have been different had I gotten it

then . . . I wouldn't have met my husband, etc.

I agree with her opinion. I have the opposite problem. I am 20 years old but

very independent. I have my own house, car and job. My family was against it and

I had to make the hard decision of choosing wither to do it or not. It's really

hard when your whole family is against it. You are scared that if something goes

wrong everyone will say " I told you not to do it " I already have a boyfriend

that I have been with for a long time and we are engaged. I completely felt that

I was good to go. It should be her choice though as if something went not as

planned she would be upset at you and always have this chip on her shoulder

because someone made her do it. She can e-mail me anytime if she has any

questions. This site is great. It has a great group of people that really help

you out. Alot of the time this is what you need before surgery you can ask all

the questions you want and people are willing to answer. If you still feels

opposed to the whole thing then she can do it when she is

ready. Hope this helps!
