I'm nowhere near Los Angeles, so I can't help you much with that part

of it.

I did have lower advancement (and a bit of sideways movement) in

2002. The braces cost about $5600, best I can remember, and the

insurance paid somewhere between $1,000 and $1,250 of that, a

lifetime cap.

The hospital bill, best I remember, was in the neighborhood of $10K,

and the surgeon and his partner (who assisted) were about $6,000,

which my medical insurance paid.

Any time you have a procedure which requires general anesthesia,

there is some risk. Not much, but some. You should discuss this with

a surgeon and/or an anesthesiologist.

There is also a possibility of numbness, either a lot or a little,

either temporarily or permanently. I was fortunate enough not to have

any, ever.

Breathing is not usually a problem for those who have surgery on the

lower jaw only. If the upper's involved, there's more likely

congestion.

You will want to know whether your surgeon wires, bands and/or

splints his or her patients after whatever surgery you're having.

that also can make a difference in the experience.

I stayed out of work for a month, but I was twice your age. It may

not take you that long to recover. I was still eating gingerly at

that point, but within a year I was fine.

Jaw surgery can also either help or hinder problems with the tmjs.

For many people, it relieves headaches and pains in the jaws. For

others, things get worse. I do believe, honestly, that most people

get helpful results and are quite pleased. That won't help, though,

if you're one of the few who have more trouble after than you had

before. This is, again, a topic to discuss with your caregivers.

Best,

C.
