Guest guest
> Thanks for your comments. I have joined the group to get additional support. I feel like I am the only one with these symptoms so it helps to hear these stories. I am trying to follow diet but it is tricky as I have been a vegetarian for many years. My blood work was positive for gluten antibodies so I have been avoiding gluten for some time. This diet is really hard with a family,so I have been cooking for them and just trying to get by with boiled eggs and vegetables. Sure takes the joy out of eating. I wouldn't mind if I started to feel better but I still feel lousy all the time. I think I will incorporate fish just to have another option. I do feel like I am losing my insides. Im wondering if all the nuts I am eating is maybe making it worse right now? Yep. It is not a good idea to eat nuts as a beginner because as you digest them, their ragged texture can exacerbate any internal injury you have in your intestines as they are trying to heal. For a visual image, i's like rescaping the scab off a knee that is scratched up and trying to heal. It would be beneficial for you to add at least fish to your diet - and some former vegetarians have also added back chicken and meat. The reason being that when you make bone broth from fish/chicken/meat -- the gelatin in the bones contains nutrients that help to heal the lining of the intestines. This is why gelatin is also recommended at the beginning of the diet - also because it is a very soft food. Once you get used to it and have been on for a while, the food on SCD can be delicious. > I go to restroom every 20 mins or so, not so much diarrhea (thats only like 6 to 8 times a day) but plenty of urgency with mucus and blood clots. I really dont think I will go back to that gastro and have the colono! > scopy & endoscopy. Im just going to try the diet and see if there is any improvement. Thanks again and If you have any suggestions to make this any better, I'd be grateful. If you are really sick, drugs can help a lot. Can you find a better doctor? I would also consider doing a vitamin E enema (the kind that you retain): http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=67345 http://www.whale.to/a/ulc.html Mara
Guest guest
Hi Donna- Stop those nuts for now. It takes some time to learn the diet. There is an intro part and stage 1 foods. A great reference is pecanbread.com- but note that the site is for kids with ASD and they avoid caseine- we can have legal SCD cow's milk. I know it is hard to cook SCD and for a family.I do the same. But your family needs you to be well, so start cooking for you. I usually make a legal main course, vegetables, and a side of (illegal)rice/potatoes/pasta for the non SCD family members. The first thing I would do is make a big pot of soup with fish bones as a base. If you have a local fish market they can get you the bones. Make it like the chicken soup recipe from BTVC and be sure to strain it well. I would do the intro diet for a few days and let your system settle. It would help to cook, peel, deseed and puree fruits and vegetables for a while. I thought my family would find this strange, but they now love SCD food and DH has started a low carb diet and now I can't keep them out of MY food. Hang in there and your family will adjust. Guest guest
Hi, Donna, Welcome to the group! We're glad you and your sister found us, though sorry you needed to. SCD can be a bit tricky for a vegetarian, although there are a few people on the list who are. Elaine Gottschall strongly recommended eggs and SCD yogurt. If you're not sure you can handle cow or goat milk SCD yogurt, there's always coconut yogurt which folks on this list have had success with. There's also almond-milk yogurt, made from homemade almond milk. Eating a bunch of nuts can be a problem, especially whole nuts, when you are first starting. I never had the blood clots, but I did have, at one point, the " every twenty minutes mucus " thing, along with lots of gas. I fortunately, had the one episode that lasted a couple of months, and then I returned to my (hah!) " normal " diarrhea. But those months were ROUGH! <grin> You may think SCD is tough. Personally, I'd have a tougher time being a vegetarian. (Among other things, I have an anaphylactic reaction to soy, and so vegetarian stuff never appealed to me, since I like breathing.) Cooking for family -- luckily for me, my husband is willing to eat SCD at home. My folks, though, weren't, so I ended up balancing holiday meals. I made the turkey (or whatever) and all the vegetables SCD-legal. I also put out bread and potatoes for the non-SCDers. As I told your sister, the lady who was my mentor in the diet nine years ago was told, when she was diagnosed with Crohn's, that her gut looked like bloody lace. 14 months of fanatical adherence to SCD later, her doctor said that if he had not diagnosed her himself, he would not have believed she was the same patient. Because her gut was healed. She, too, had a tough time because she was a vegetarian for ethical reasons -- she was a practicing Buddhist. Her teacher finally sat her down and pointed out that by trying to be a vegetarian for ethical reasons when her body would not tolerate it, she was actually being UNethical. She was abusing herself by not eating what she knew she needed to eat in order to get well. Fish is generally pretty good to add in. If you're willing to consider cheeses at some point, they can also add significant variety to your diet. Some people do prefer to go dairy free at the beginning of the diet, especially if they haven't had it for a while. Guest guest
Thank you so much for your time and interest. I will definitely work on my diet. I would be very happy just to have my plain diarrhea back. I'm not even asking for great health, just a little improvement. I will have to seriously consider adding other proteins to my diet. Right now its the fish or me, is what I'm thinking. Thank you for all your suggestions and the time you have put into writing to me and my sister. I hope to someday give you some positive news. Guest guest
hi Donna Maybe this will help you if you are having lots of blood in your BM. My own experience with my daughter- I wasn't cooking her vegetables long enough, I think she was able to tolerate in the begining but later became problem. Now I am cooking her vegetables for hr and more. Also I think it will be a good idea to read the book BTVC. Reading about die off is very important esp in the early stage of the Diet. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Welcome to the group. You have definitely come to the right place. I've been here a little over a year, and in that time I've heard amazing stories of improvement and healing from various people. I think you will heal more than you can even imagine right now, but it is slow so be prepared for that. My gut has never been as bad as yours (I have IBS, leaky gut, etc) but I've had it running my life for almost 30 years. During that period I had 20 years when I was an enforced vegan, actually eventually something of a subset of vegan. It wasn't philosophical, just a matter of the few foods I could handle. I have never felt worse in my life. So I would urge you to at least consider adding back more proteins than you have been used to, but probably go slowly on that. When I finally was able to try protein again (after a course to help leaky gut) I literally had to start with one baby bite and work up from there. This even with HCl. But I think anything you feel you can and are willing to try would help you. The meat/fish broths are particularly healing. Good luck getting started and please ask any and all questions. Thank you so much for your time and interest. I will definitely work on my diet. I would be very happy just to have my plain diarrhea back. Guest guest
Hi Donna, I've been a vegetarian most of my life too. I did end up adding fish and eggs to increase my protein intake. Before that, my main protein source was lentils. However fish is much much much easier to digest than lentils. In the beginning of the diet, I actually cut out lentils. It wasn't till about 5 to 6 months into the diet, after I had more or less stabilized, that I started having lentils regularly. I think you'll see a lot of benefits from eating fish. It actually helped with easing my diarrhea. Also, for some reason eating an actual fish is much more beneficial for me than just having fish oil. I found salmon and whitefish like cod easiest to start with. Stay away from mahi mahi - way too fishy in the beginning. (I was literally heaving when I had that) I hope you feel better soon. Stick strictly to the diet.. it stopped the bleeding for me. It really does work! And I'm sure you will find joy in eating again -- just give yourself a chance to experiment in the kitchen.
