You might read back to what she specifically responded to before jumping to defense. She specifically made a statement about Tofu. There are huge numbers of citations related specificially to Tofu and its manufacture. This is separate from concerns about other soy products. Many vegetarians have gotten themselves in trouble by trying to get their protein from Tofu. While I don't claim to be an expert on Tofu as I would never eat it, here are the risks associated by those pointing them out:Increase thyroid damage, especially in women Increase the risk of breast cancer in women, brain damage in both sexes, and cause abnormalities in infants Contribute to thyroid disorders, especially in women Promote kidney stones Weaken your immune system Cause severe, potentially fatal food allergiesNo, I'm not saying eating any tofu is bad. What appears to be a problem though is vegetarians loading up on Tofu to make up for the lack of protein in their diet. As to soy, it's manufactured many different ways. But it is again not the perfect food some make it out to be. Many of us already have thyroid disorders and it is a problem there. Thyroid issues are well confirmed. As to cancer and weakening the immune system some believe and some don't. Most foods in excess have some risks and the problem with soy is that many jump to it in place of all meats or proteins and then consume abnomally high amounts of it. Having a little soy within a healthy person's diet is probably fine. However, for someone with thyroid issues soy can be a problem and for people with weakened systems, loading up on soy as a substitute for other proteins is probably unwise. As to the farming, what you did on your small farm versus what is done on industrial soy farms today is probably very different. What my relatives did years ago on their vegetable farms versus what is done today on huge industrial vegetable farms is in no way similar. Now, as to the pesticides and genetic altering thats a personal choice. Personally, I'm not that comfortable or uncomfortable with it. I just accept that its part of the way things are. That may or may not be wise. But, frankly, I'm not any more comfortable with most of the "organic" farms either. The reality is that we do so much different in farming today, vegetables and animals, that we really don't know what some of the effects are. However, I do not discredit those who like organically farmed items. To say there is no need for them as you did is an opinion you're entitled to but they're entitled to their opinions as well. Some organic foods I'm sure are safer and better. My only problem is I don't know how to determine which ones. I can't visit every farm in the world nor do I know enough if I did. To say have no fear of grocery products produced from soy is a statement that needs qualifiers. I'd say have fear of Tofu and have fear of making soy as the largest part of your diet and the only protein. I'd also say have fear of large amounts of soy if you have thyroid problems. I'd say don't have fear of a small amount of soy in a product or of using a small amount in cooking something you like. Moderation. But, then, I like Pinto Beans, but I'm not about to make them my primary food at every meal. I personally wouldn't consumer it but I really have no reason to do so.

Here is a relatively neutral article on the benefits versus the risks:

http://www.organichealthblog.com/2008/soy-milk-benefits-vs-dangers/

Now, I will add to that the fact that I do not drink cow milk either as

I'm very lactose intolerant plus can't stand the taste. Couldn't stand

it long before finding out about the intolerance although think that

often our bodies send the warnings like that.

Pink

Silk has been changed considerably since the acquisition by Dean Farms.

Whether that now makes it any sort of problem of not, I can't say.

However, you might want to google Silk a bit. It's sure been a matter of

major controversy in the industry and with vegetarians and moms.

Thanks Bruce and Beth:

I admire how much you have learned about pulmonary diseases and how very focus you both are.

I am living my life in a hurry and my to-do list grows longer each day. I am trying to eliminate milk and milk products from my diet. I am building my daily diet around three cans of Pulmocare made by Ensure. I am holding my weight steady and my oxygen-meter gives good reports after a year of IPF. I do not defend milk and meat production; however, I wish I knew a lot more about the food that I should be using to stay even with my disease.

These are not the best months of my life--I am not giving up. If you are able to focus and enjoy each day, I would bet you have one very caring and supportive care giver. Burns

Perhaps you said already but why are you trying to build a diet around

Pulmocare as opposed to just a good basic balanced diet?

As to your to-do list, maybe it's time to chop off the things that

aren't essential to your own personal well being and happiness. I

overcomplicated life for the first 56 years of my life, always trying to

do more than humanly possible. There is nothing more frustrating than

setting unreasonable expectations on yourself. When the to-do list is

too long then you don't even feel the satisfaction from accomplishing

those things you did. Take just a few of those things and put it on a

list for the next week or two weeks. But make sure its items you are

sure you can get done. Put some easy things on it. Then make sure you go

back and mark through the things you accomplished so you can then say I

did 12 things on my list but didn't do one but I still feel good. By

having a huge to-do list you're building in failure and the feeling of

defeat. We deceive ourselves by using words like " I have to get this

done " when, in reality, there are very few things we have to do. One

thing I do know is that the simpler you can make your life the easier it

will be. Without all the extra pressures on you, the pressure of dealing

with the disease will not be quite as overwhelming.

And, the focusing and enjoyment have nothing to do with a caregiver so

whatever you were betting me I'll be glad to accept in either cash or

check.....lol.

I second that heartily!!

WE are lucky to have them both, they have an sbundance of knowledge about the

disease, but that alone would not have sufficed were it not for their intense

empathy towards each one of us and the zeal with which they doit!We all have

good intentions, to be able to carry it out is something greater.

Thank you both
