I hope you can find something I don't know of any right now but will keep my ears out. I do have life insurance but have had it for about 25 years. They won't let me increase. Actually we had gone into see the agent in April to increase both mine and my husbands. There are guaranteed issue life insurance policies but they are quite

expensive. The way they work is the policy is guaranteed issue but for

the first two years it only pays a return of premium plus a little more.

Once you've had it two years, it pays the full policy amount. Generally

you can get these only in small amounts up to $15,000 or $20,000. They

are sometimes referred to as burial insurance because of their small

amounts. Putting dollars and cents to them and life is a bit strange but

here are some generalities if you think of them as investments.

Typically, if you live between two around eight years they are a decent

investment. If you live longer then you pay in more than you get out.

The insurance company is actually gambling on you either dying within

two years or living more than ten years. I'm not suggesting them but

only answering your question so you have the information.

As to some who offer them:

AARP does through New York Life

Gerber

Colonial Penn

Search " Guaranteed Acceptance Life Insurance " on google for to find more

information and perhaps more companies that offer such plans.

Note: these are unlike what you see often advertised on tv that says no

medical exam and then throws in three simple questions. We all fail on

the three questions. On these policies however there are no questions to

fail you. Again, the insurance company is playing the odds on your life

expectancy as basically they do with all life insurance.

I did buy some....I figured one of three things could happen. I did in

less than two years and nothing gained or lost. I die in 2-5 years or

so, which was my life expectancy and its a good investment. I live

longer and its a lousy investment but I don't care....the goal is to

always make life insurance a lousy investment by living and paying a

long long long time.

You need to find one with no medical question to enroll. Most of these have only return of premiums in the first two years. Just be very careful in how and where you're doing that. There have also

been lots of people to prepay but it not be there at the time or to

prepay and find more had to be paid. Some states regulate and control

this better than others.

After I was diagnosed with IPF we went to a funeral place and asked about the services etc. My fife and I sat across the desk of the woman who was interviewing us and I had the O2 tube in my nose and we proceeded to tell her that my Dr just told us that I had only three years to live. (Initially, that was the diagnosis) She then asked me about five questions about my health and I was able to answer no to all questions, no mention of my current condition.

She then said, well, you were able to answer all the questions with a "no" so you qualify for our ten year payment plan. Its an Insurance policy that covers all the funeral expenses and includes inflation changes etc. etc. So, we took the plan figuring if I died somewhere around three to five years we win, If I live longer than that they win. ly, I hope they win but who knows? Anyway, just letting every one know for about $50.00 a month this coverage is available.

I'm hoping you found a good home and good policy. I would still advise

people to be careful. The problems are that so many funeral homes change

hands. Many times the new owners have either not honored such plans or

only partially. Make sure the money is going into a trust fund of some

sort. For many funeral homes this is a way of getting revenues years

ahead of expenses and that leads to serious problems down the road.

Check out any regulations your state has.

One thing that has made these plans popular is people putting their

money into them so they can qualify for medicaid. But there is lots of

fine print and are lots of plans not fully honored. There are other

safer ways to save your money. Would you go to a car dealership and pay

them monthly starting now for a car in ten years? Just make sure your

state is one that has your money protected.

Check out AARP insurance on their website. Not sure if you have to be 50, but I

have a $50K policy issued when I was 56 with no medical exam required. It's

$330 every six months.

Hello Dorothy,

I have seen commercials for an insurance company called Colonial Penn that offers life insurance without an exam. I don't know if ther is an age criteria but I thought you could check it out.

Bruce,

I worked for a insurance company home office for 29 years. I had and insurance license in in 48 states so I know a little about insurance. This policy is through Lincoln Heritige Life Insurance Co. Lincoln Heritige has an A.M. Best rating of "A" (Excellent) Obviously their underwriting leaves something to be desired but, oh well, one mans loss can be another mans gain. I feel pretty comfortble with it.

NO, I would not buy a car and pay for it in advance of receiving it but, if you think about it, all insurance is a intangible and you are always paying in advance for a "Future Payoff" That includes your Life policy. There is no need for a trust fund, the premiums are sent directly to the Ins Co.Bob

I was not aware specifically what form of prepayment plan you got. Yours

is a policy from a rated firm. Many are not. Those are the ones I was

addressing. Many times the plans are not insurance policies and people

don't realize that.

What kind of agreement then is there that your funeral home will accept

the agreed amount as total payment? I'm assuming thats under a separate

contract and then that becomes the piece with some uncertainly.

I'm not meaning at all to question what you have or did. I am saying

that most don't have your experience and that prepaid funeral plans

(often not insurance and in many forms) are among the areas of highest

consumer complaints in the country. So only giving people caution. I

have much as you do with a policy to cover the expenses but I don't have

a funeral home involved so pricing is open. On the other hand mine is

going to be very inexpensive with my plans.

Bruce,

My policy has a defined benefit. Although the funeral home explained the expenses (at their facility) to determine the coverage needed for the services requested. The policy would cover those expenses. Based on these expenses plus additional expenses due to inflation over time. i.e. the defined benefit is increased periodically to cover inflation. If the Funeral home were to go out of business the policy could be moved to another facility with similar services and costs.

I don't think this would be a good deal for too many people, unless they believe their time is limited or especially if they can obtain other types of coverage. If I live ten years, the Insurance Co. will make a lot of money off me. But, I kinda look at it as a win win. If I don't live very long I win, if I do live a long time I win (just costs more). Term insurance is always the best in my opinion, but its not a option for most of us.

Bob, 70, IPF 1/09, 5 Bypasses 7/01

Many of the policies advertised with out a medical exam require you to complete a questionnaire that if answered honestly would eliminate most of us. If you give false information on the questionnaire (application) and its discovered would make the insurance invalid and the most the Insurance company would have to pay is to give back all the premium paid in.

Lincoln Heritige life Insurance Company. If you don't mention your IPF and answer the questions asked, you can get the policy. I think it would be best if you could find a funeral home who has a licensed agent to sell the insurance to you.

why not just put xxx amount of dollars into a savings account set up for burial expenses?

then the estate would have money to pay for the funeral

my aunt prepaid her funeral, i was the executor, there were no problems with the funeral home at all when she died

The reason for insurance versus savings is that you may not have time to

accumulate enough in a savings account. There is also another reason for

any of those potentially seeking certain forms of assistance such as

medicaid. That is savings counts toward determining eligibility.

I think there is something else being missed here too and I don't want

to open an argument over proper funerals or burials, but just to mention

that while the average funeral and burial costs $6000-8000, there are

many less costly alternatives. Less expensive funerals (caskets,

compacted time, negotiation). Cremation. Having any service somewhere

other than the funeral home. Military, if eligible. Not having a

traditional service. Donation of body to science.

Funeral costs is not a concern of mine at death. However, other costs

are. The cost of disposing of one's possessions or downsizing living if

married. The cost of terminating leases. What about vehicles and such.

Maybe moving expenses for a survivor. The loss of the income if married.

Those are the types of things I've tried to cover.

I wrestled with this issue too. My husband and I went

to the funeral home we were going to use, discussed what arrangements we

wanted, and they gave us a price. We could pay for the funeral now or not

pay anything and leave the information/planning in a file until the time came

for the family to make arrangements. That way, at least they would know

what we wanted and wouldn’t be burdened with thinking they should “get

the best” and spend unnecessary money. The third option was to pay

a certain amount each month, which turned out to be the most expensive way to

go. The money would be paid to an insurance company and not the funeral

home.

We opted to pay for the funeral now, and an insurance policy

was issued through Homesteaders Group Life Insurane Co. I think it

is a company this particular funeral home used when a funeral was prepaid

and maybe other funeral homes have the same type of deal. If the person

moved, the contract was transferrable to wherever. When the time

came to use it, the cost of the funeral home services would be fixed at 2009

rates.

We met with the funeral home people twice before finalizing

anything. I wanted to do this for my family because when my Dad passed

away 3 years ago, he had prepaid his funeral and it was the best thing he could

have done for his “kids” There were “incidental”

expenses we paid, but the bulk of the money was paid and we knew what he

wanted.

Joyce,

Putting XXX aside for your funeral is fine but, that is assuming that each person has XXX to put aside. Many don't. So, Insurance is another method of taking care of the obligation for funeral expences and paying for it monthly. It means having immediate full coverage, with the minimum amount of XXX. I'm not saying Its for everyone, but some may benifit from it.
