I am schedule for cataract surgery on the 13th of Jan. I am on 20 mg prednisone and was told to increase to 40mg 2 days prior to surgery, then the day after surgery go to 30 mg and the next day back to 20 mg.

Hope this helps.

The cataract surgery on my left eye is scheduled for the 2nd jan.not exaxtly the way one I had my right eye done back in 1998, kept putting off the other eye , but now it i can no longer ignore it, i am finding it difficult to guage the depth while stepping down and also while cooking etc so decided to get it done . last time i was told to increase my prednisone dosage fom 10mg to 20mg 10 days before the surgery i have a different Pulmo now and he has'nt told me anything, does any one taking prednisoe know any thing about this?

I know that Sher had her surgery recently but she does not take prednisone am I right?

Wishing every one a Happy New year!

Hi Geeta!.... yes, my cataract surgery was about a year ago and no, I'm not taking Prednisone.

I'm glad you are getting your eye fixed. A fall would be the last thing you need.

God Bless the surgeon's hands.

Hi Geeta,

I am waiting to have cataract surgery also. Both eyes. My doc said that the

prednisone would not affect this surgery. I intend to double check before

scheduling it but she did not seem at all concerned.

Geeta,

You will be in my thoughts and prayers and I'm sure all will go well. My Dad had cataract surgery 3 years ago and he had to use the steroid eye drops for several weeks before the surgery. That of course, doesn't help you at all. Why don't you give your pulmo a call and find out. Your eye surgeon knows all about your lung condition right?

Beth,

Thank you for your response ,your wishes and prayers. As I said I had my right

eye done about 11years back , I was on higher dose of prednisone and my pulmo

had inreased the dosage 10days before the surgery and brought it down later but

this time my doc had not done so, so i thought of asking you guys. i will speak

to him too. Yea my opthamic surgeon was shown all my papers and he is aware of

my condition..

It was fairly simple last time and I was out of hospital the same day. I do hope

it will be so this time too.

Interestingly when I had a small MCI a few months later my pulmo felt it could

have been brought on by the stress of the cataract surgery. He says 'you may not

have felt the stress but the body has been under stress'.

What would you say?

Thank you once again and Wish you and your loved ones 'A Very Happy New Year'!!

Geeta,

I would absolutely say it's possible that the stress from the surgery brought on the MCI. Possible but of course no way to know for certain. Stress, even happy stress, can do things to our bodies that we don't expect. In many ways we are already stretched to the limit just coping with our lungs, anything that gets added can cause our bodies to revolt a bit. So I suppose the moral of the story is to be kind and patient with ourselves and get a bit more rest than we think we really need to get by.

I'll be thinking of you!

Our bodies consist of so many interconnected parts including our brain

and everything that impacts one of those parts can also then indirectly

impact others. Sometimes we're aware and sometimes we aren't. Certainly

the composition of the chemicals and neurotransmitters released by our

brain are impacted by the least disturbance so something like cataract

surgery would do so. We're so complex. Think of something as simple as a

bug bite on your leg or as hitting your foot against something and how

quickly you feel it, how the message is transmitted. Sometimes we're not

aware. I think of post VATS when I wasn't aware I needed pain killers

but my lungs needed them because they were feeling the pain that I

wasn't mentally processing. A great example right now is Peggy and her

morphine. The science of how it works is still somewhat debated but the

reality that it does work is not.

Beth,

Both you and Bruce are in agreement with my old pulmo.!! he was great for me ,

made my diagnosis way back in 1995 when there were hardly any cases of fibrosis

and people here had nev er heard of it. He refused to allow any cardiologist to

treat that time when I had the MIC and insisted on treating me himself he

stabilised me after the infraction within 24 hrs. he was always meticulous in

his treament and gave all his findings and diagnosis in writihg. ufortunately i

had to part from him as he did not want me to under go surgery for my hiatal

hernia as he felt i would not survive it, while tha gastronterlogist was rightly

of the opinion that i had no other option .later I contiued with pulmo at that

hospital who is a student of my former pul monologist.

sorry for rambling

ann,

As MB says, it is quite a simple surgery and you will have no problems. I do not

know why the prednisone is upped before the surgery MB or Bruce could answer

better, i guess it has to for making you lungs face the stress better , or may

be becoz of the little anesthasia they will be using.

All the best for your surgery!

Wish you a happy new year!

It's actually an involved issue of much debate and therefore one where

individual physicians may vary. However, my very layman comments would

be that your system is suppressed and you're about to invoke trauma on

it which might cause inflammation or other immune system type reactions

and therefore taking extra precaution might be appropriate.

Stated differently, you take Prednisone because your system (immune and

otherwise) has overreacted (whether connective tissue disease or

inflammation or fibrosis). You're going to have surgery which may well

make your system react even more. So, the extra prednisone for the brief

period.

Now some doctors don't believe an increase is necessary but it's often

based on what dosage you've been on, how long, and how active your

conditions are.

Some of the medical arguments center around the HPA or HPTA axis (HPA is

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) and the interactions between those

organs and the effect of your body's cortisol on that interaction. This

comes back to the entire complexity of our entire systems and their

interconnectivity.

I don't know how your days differ from ours but if you've had your surgery I hope that it went well. I'll be thinking of you.Beverley Joy,71, Birds and mold 1-09,Diabetes,Sjogren's,Fibromyalgia IdahoSubject: cataract surgeryTo: breathe-support Date: Wednesday, December 30, 2009, 9:03 AM
