Guest guest
Hi , I can imagine that you feel like time is sort of ticking for both your teeth and having babies.... I haven't heard about people doing both at the same time, only about some women putting having a baby off until the surgery and everything was done. I guess the only other way would be to try to get pregnant, say tomorrow HA HA so that the baby is born and you are done breastfeeding by the time you are ready for surgery.... that way while you were pregnant, you would only be dealing with the braces. I can't imagine that anything you are given for the surgery and after (steriods, narcotics, antibiotics, etc.) would be good for the baby to receive through your breastmilk, so I wouldn't want those two things to coincide. I guess you'd just have to forego the pain-killers for the ortho adjustments. It isn't the worst pain, but not great either! Or, I think tylenol or something out there is considered safe by obgyns.... I guess you could ask. Good luck as you figure this out! Sorry this post isn't more helpful, just my thoughts. Let us know what you figure out! Guest guest
I'm one of those put-offers! My husband and I are ready to try for baby #1, and have been for a year or more, but I got my braces on in January so we decided to put it off one more year until surgery is done. (I'm 28 now, will be 29 in January.) Luckily my teeth were ready in 8 mos instead of 12, so hopefully I'll be good and healed in a few months and we can start trying at the beginning of the year, instead of having to have waited until the Jan/Feb for surgery, then healing, then baby. (My surgery is next week.) But it was a tough decision for me last winter, to decide whether to do this first, or put it off and have a baby first. The lovely ladies here helped me make that decision though, and I'm glad I did it this way. If I'd gone for a baby first, I would still be pregnant (if at all) and this way I'm already about to have surgery, so this turned out faster, lol. Then I can just move on...and hopefully have a gorgeous smile whenever my time to have a baby comes (unlike my wedding pics that have my crooked smile, hehe.) Good luck with your decision! ~
Guest guest
I feel for you. I had two small children and wanted to start the process of my surgery. Shortly thereafter I became pregnant with my third child. I did not go to my oral surgeon until my youngest was born and about a year old, my braces went on when she was two, and my surgery was done when she was three. It's a tough call, but ultimately yours to make. I can't say, but if you waited an extra year to get the ball rolling, braces and such, do you really think it would make that much of a difference with your teeth wearing away? Also, things would depend on how long you're planning to nurse. I nursed each of my children until they were two, longer than most. I live in the US and was approved to take several kinds of pain killers, vicodin, darvocet and the like for my frequent migraines (one of the reasons I had my surgery). Maybe you could talk to not only your oral surgeon but also your ob-gyn about what pain meds are okay while pregnant and nursing. Tylenol is usually sufficient for adjustments on braces and I'm sure that's safe. It's a hard decision, but I wouldn't put off having a baby until after surgery. Sometimes the time frame stretches out, braces take longer to have put on then expected, or time in braces is extended because of some unforeseen occurance. Unless you have an extreme orthognathic case I would think a short wait until you are finished expanding your family wouldn't hurt. I'll be interested to hear your decision. Either way, we're here to support you. Whether you choose to go ahead now, or wait a year or two, this message board will be around to offer advice and a listening ear. Take care. Guest guest
Hi , I was in a similar situation. I was in braces for both of my pregnancies but I never felt like I needed any painkillers for the ortho adjustments. Mine teeth were sore but I could tolerate it. I had my older daughter when I was 33 and was ready for surgery shortly afterwards. It took six months for me to get an appointment with my surgeon and by then I was pregnant again. My surgeon was very understanding about my pregnancy. Of course he couldn't do the surgery while I was pregnant and he didn't want to do it while I was breastfeeding either. He said that since the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be breastfed for a full year he wouldn't do the surgery until my baby had her first birthday. He didn't want anything to interfere with my breastfeeding and my baby was more important than my surgery. He said that I had lived with my bite all my life so one more year wouldn't make a difference. My teeth were also worn down a lot and my joints were bad but things didn't really change during that one year. I finally had my surgery the week of my daughter's first birthday. I was very happy we had waited. I was only on strong painkillers the first two weeks after surgery but was still on antibiotics when I tried to resume breastfeeding 3 weeks post-op. My daughter immediately had an allergic reaction to my antibiotics so that put an end to our breastfeeding for good. I also had a lot of complications with my TMJ joints and have had six surgeries in the last three years so I'm happy I had my daughter when I did. Good luck with whatever you decide. > Hi all, > > I am considering having surgery for my open bite and some asymmetry. > I've seen a surgeon for an initial consultation. > > I'm wondering if anyone's had braces and then surgery with a young > baby and whether it worked OK? > > I have a 2 year old and plan to be pregnant again very soon.
