Guest guest
Hi all. I am hoping some of you can help me. First, for those of you with children that have an IEP, how do they qualify? I mean, in what areas and why? just had his taken away in May because he turned three and they re-evaluated him and determined that he wasn't delayed enough to continue to have an IEP. So, they said they would set up a 504 plan for him and accommodate him in school however he would need it. This school district is a joke though. I had to CALL them to remind them to write up a 504 plan for him. It is like as soon as he turned three and was turned over to the school district, they dropped the ball on him. I was and am very frustrated about it. Magically, at three, he is fine! And, he had been receiving OT, and PT up until that point. Dr. H says that not only needs increased feeding therapy, but he also needs speech therapy. Well, was NEVER evaluated for speech therapy by the school system. But, he barely passed the gross motor section of the evaluation. They told me that didn't have anything wrong that would hinder his ability to go to school and learn. Evidently, for an IEP, you have to have something that will interfere with your education. And they said doesn't. So, I was just wondering what and how your children qualified for an IEP and what I should do about having his speech evaluated. Jodi Z., I know you will be good with this. If you want, you can just email me if you don't want to post it here. I am trying to get 's feeding therapy increased. Dr. H wants him to go at least twice a week, if not three times per week. But, my current drive to therapy is almost an hour one way. We are looking to get him in somewhere closer to home, but not having any luck. He is on a waiting list right now and no one has any idea how long it will be before he gets in. And, his therapist has called the school district and they are not returning her calls after an initial phone call. They were supposed to look into seeing if they could offer therapy through the school district, but she hasn't heard back and has called and left copious messages. So, I think they are just trying to ignore the situation. Which, has to be illegal in some way. It just isn't right. If they know there is a child that at least needs to be evaluated, they should do something about it. Ugh. Very frustrated! Jodi R.
Guest guest
Jodi, I feel your frustration! We had very similar issues here when Alyssa turned 3. We had a very difficult time with our system as well and I had to have evaluated 3 times before they would okay the speech therapy. (She had just been discarged from OT). Basically, the first time she was evaluated it was by a social worker. She understood Alyssa and passed her. I asked for a copy of the screening and the school said it was against copyright laws! I requested she be screened again 6 mo later after another visit with dr. h who was concerned about a few things. I found out mid screen that the person was a social worker. I requested the screening be stopped and rescheduled with a speech pathologist. They were NOT happy, but I finally got it. Bottom line, although individual words test out fine, when she speaks in conversation it all goes to pot!! We finally got services this school year and we LOVE our ST at her school. It took over 9 months after her 3rd birthday!! I am anxious to see the other responses you get as well!! My advice is be persistent and MAKE them do their jobs!! Good Luck!! Guest guest
My child qualifies when her pediatrician writes scripts for OT,PT and SPEECH and I give the orders to the school. This is Michigan, but I do not know how other cities handle the IEP program or what grey areas they have with governmental compliance. AvaMarie, mother of ita, IUGR, SGA and CPP > > Hi all. Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I just had to say something here ... I haven't had any problems yet with Noah getting help, but it frustrates the heck out of me all the problems I see everyone having ... the schools are for the education of our kids and they need to be doing that and taking care of people. If only they knew (maybe they do) how much stress and anxiety they cause by not doing their job (nothing at all against you, Jodi Z and Deb cause you two sound wonderful). I have friends here in town with different issues with their children and it's just awful to see what they have to go through. I feel very much for you Jodi and the others that are having problems. It's like watching something that you have absolutely no control over and you just want to scream and help! Oooopss sorry I was venting ... venting for all of you!!!! And possible me some day in the future. Dawna Rambling on and on and on > > Hi all. I am hoping some of you can help me. First, for those of > you with children that have an IEP, how do they qualify? Guest guest
Jodi, Go for " Other Health Impaired. " Your doctor or Dr. H. can write something to be submitted. Have it stress the impact of illness on his education, that missing school frequently is a great possibility and he will therefore be missing out on educational opportunities. Email me privately tomorrow and I'll try to help you more. I just had the ped write a letter for Max so he could continue to receive services. The ped. had ME write the letter, she had it photocopied onto her letterhead and then signed it. I can send you a copy. Jodi Z
Guest guest
FYI - if an eval is done and you are not satisfied with the results, you have a right to contest it and request an independent eval be done. The child study team is then supposed to give you the name(s) of people that they will pay for. It is your right to have this done if you disagree with what the report says. Guest guest
Dawna, Don't worry about offending Deb and me. We are teachers. We do not determine whether or not a child qualifies. We take those kids who do qualify and do our best to help them be the best they can be. I'm sure Deb would agree with me on this: there are many kids who do not qualify for services that I would love to get my hands on. It is just as frustrating for me, the special ed teacher, as it is for the parent. Jodi Z
Guest guest
Jodi - well, unfortunately I don't know alot about IEPs. Fortunately for us though Jodi - is that we have this group to help us! <grin>. My only suggestion to you about the Speech Therapist, however - is to be persistent about getting who you want, when you want. I know that getting a prescription/referral from your pediatrician helps too. I haven't had to deal with any of this yet....I'm sure I'll have more opinions when I do. Wish I could be of more assistance. From all our discussions, just remember what I told you about " asking in such a way that you don't expect anything but results " . Remember the copies of medical records and how I get those? Persistence. You will do just fine. <big grin>. - H > > Hi all. I am hoping some of you can help me. Guest guest
Jodi... I am not sure if this will help, but if you have documentation by his MD, and speech therapist but the school district will not acknowledge his need for services and an IEP. First how long has it been since you requested the IEP? The IEP is not a state document but federal document. Secondly, if a parent requests an IEP for a child, then they have 30 days from the date of the request to make an appointment. If there is no action or response then go to the Department of Education, Special Education director. Laurie 4ft 1, 45 years and I have a son with special needs --- Jodi wrote: > Hi all. Guest guest
Thanks, Laurie. was just evaluated in May and that is when they said he no longer qualifies for an IEP. I tried to fight it out, but they kept telling me that 's needs weren't going to affect his education and that he passed all sections. So, I just thought that was that. But, upon seeing Dr. H and she telling me that needs speech therapy and that he shoudl still have an IEP now I am worrying again. So, I am just trying to figure out where to go from here. His current feeding therapist has called the Special Education guy and he was supposed to call her back, but hasn't and she has left so many messages for him. Nothing. So, I need to call and find out what is going on now. They are just wanting to pass this off and not do anything about it, and that just isn't acceptable to me. Jodi R. > > > Hi all. Guest guest
Jodi - As a reminder, as I suggested too - when you call them, ask for specifics on why he no longer qualifies and what it is they need to have him qualify. Are they going to take responsibility for 's learning curves after the fact that Dr. H who is incredibly well-versed with his particuclar Syndrome has indeed recommended that he have these services? The school system IS responsible for the best outcome educationally for our children. Are they ready to accept the challenges they may be faced with if he is not meeting his personal needs in order to perform to his fullest potential? If they prefer to disagree with a medical practioner, where is the proof that their decision more acurately reflects s' needs? Tell them you would suggest another review. <grin> - H > > > > > Hi all.
