Guest guest
Hi ! 1) started out with a Foley catheter, and moved to an AMT Mini button approximately 6 weeks after surgery. A little sooner than some, but his tube got clogged and his surgeon here decided to change it for a button at the time. He uses the AMT Mini because his stoma is only a 12F in diameter, and MicKey doesn't make a button that small. 2) I think most surgeon place some kind of tube first, and then move to a button after healing of the stoma is complete. 3) The balloon for 's button has only burst once or twice, BUT they do wear out and leak fluid after a time. Our surgeon has us changing his button once every three months to avoid that problem. We were instructed to check the fluid in the balloon once a week to make sure that it stays at the proper amount. This balloon is porous, just like a blow up type balloon, and will eventually deflate if you don't keep an eye on the fluid levels. 's weight gain was very slow in the beginning. He was approximately 8# when it was placed at 8.5 months of age. At one year of age he only weighed 10#. However, it wasn't long after that, that his weight suddenly took off, and he got too fat! According to Dr H, this problem seems to be " typical " of tube fed RSS kids. Once this happens it is extremely important to keep an eye on the child's weight to height ratio because our kids tend to put on fat instead of building muscle. Being overweight can lead to problems with premature adrenarche, insulin resistance, and blood sugars. Hope this helps!
