The support Jac is getting here is wonderful. You all have a picture in your

mind of what the prowler looks like and what he/she is out to do.

Unfortunately, here in Florida, we have a prowler case that gives second

thought. A

teenager after his birthday party, along with his friends, ringing doorbells and

running away. This particularly large teen was too slow and the owner, in the

dark believing it to be a home invasion, shot the teen.

Now, I can relate to the parents. I can relate to the teen. I played these

kinds of pranks too. I can also relate to the the frightened homeowner.

Fay, you also have to keep in mind that I live out in the country, on a

farm. My house sits 50 yards off the road, up a dark drive. If someone is

just " ringing my doorbell " as a prank, they have climbed a fence or opened a

gate to do it. And finding someone INSIDE my vehicle, parked BEHIND my house

is not someone pulling a prank. It is someone who is breaking the law in

every sense of the word. And I'm a retired cop, from a large city. Not a

two-horse town. I've had the best training the country has to offer (OKC has

the #3 police academy in the country). I've been in shoot/don't shoot

situations MANY times (and there were a few times when I DID have to shoot),

and I'm not likely to just go off out of fear. And I maintain my right to

protect myself and my property. Again, I say, " Better to be tried by 12 than

carried by 6. " <VBG>

As an aside, several years ago, I was working in plain clothes. My

then-husband was working out of town, so not home. I got home from work, and

found my back door kicked open. I came in, gun drawn, and searched my house.

No one inside, and nothing missing, but my doorframe was torn up, and there

was a big old Nike footprint in the middle of the door. I suspect my German

Shepherd was lying under the bushes next to the door, and nailed him about

the time the door came open. I called the local police to come make a

report. I live in a 2-horse town. The officer, who was still very wet behind

the ears, said, " Ma'am, you should have waited for the police to get here to

check your house. " I told him, " I've pulled more burglars out of attics and

closets and from under houses than you will ever see in your lifetime. If

I'd found someone in my house, you'd just be coming to pick up the body. "

And I meant it. I still do.

I know enough to not just shoot arbitrarily. I know how to take someone

down, and I have 4 sets of handcuffs. LOL
