Guest guest
I looked up Pica in my medical books. It says the cravings are for some other things, didn't specifically mention ice or anything else, but the one craving it did say was a craving for dirt. I think I'll stick with my ice crunching, thank you. Judi 4/24/00 >>>>>What other cravings? Guest guest
I have worked with the mentally retarded (hate that term) on and off for some 10 years. I have had several that have had pica cravings and they are usually cigarette butts, which I find totally yuck. For others it was paint chips. Guest guest
YEah, ice being the first one, then laundry detergent (often brand specific) and dirt. Scary, huh? Test, test, test. Honest, takes 15 minutes (and mosta that to park) to find out. Iron inusions take all day, shots are more annoying. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
Lori, is what you describe the result of a nutritional and/or mineral imbalance in these people, or something more psychologically/developmentally based? I've seen a young man eating cigarette butts too, but he was in a state hospital and I assumed it was an affect of his mental illness. Guest guest
The individuals that I worked with that ate cigarette butts were severly mentally retarded. There was no evidence it was a nutritional deficiency so we suspect it was due to their mental illness.
