Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group. Though I had upper and lower jaw surgery, I wasn't wired shut, only rubber banded. I was able to speak the next day when they took out the airway and stomach tubes. Probably someone who was wired could better address that question. At first people will probably not be able to understand you, but with time it will probably get better. The drooling will get better with time. We all seemed to drool some. Though I was not wired I couldn't chew for 6 weeks. The length time you have to be wired is probably related to the amount of movement the surgeon performed, whether you had braces or not, whether you have plates and screws holding the jaws in place, etc. Each patient'scase is a little different. I know another person on this group that is wired for that long at least. Hugs, we're think of you. Shirley
Guest guest
Hey there...are you completely wired shut like with a bite plate/splint betwen your teeth or are you just banded? I've been completely wired/tightly banded for going on 18 days now and I still cannot talk b/c the bite plate between my teeth muffles the sound. It has about the same effect as talking through a very dense pillow or something like that. I am supposed to be wired shut for 6 weeks but I move into college out of state on the 19th so hopefully I will have the wires/plate removed this coming friday. It's not typical of my surgeon to remove wires so soon but under the circumstances it has to be done. I may have to have bands or whatnot for a while after that just for the initial healing process to complete which is typically 4-6 weeks i think. Anyway, I hope that helped some. -- > Hello everyone! Guest guest
Hey! Thanks for the info, it was completely helpful. Yes, I'm completely wired shut with a splint. This isn't good news at all though, because I'm supposed to return to work/school next week. My OS said it was because of the swelling, but I'm going to ask him again tomorrow at my visit. Well good luck with college, and the rest of your healing. I'm a senior at Austin Peay, so this will be a major setback if I cannot talk for another 5 weeks. I want to graduate on time!! Anyways thanks once again. Take care! ~ > > Hello everyone! My name is , and I'm 7 days post-op for > both > > upper and lower jaw surgery (open/overbite). Guest guest
HEy! Thanks, and Austin Peay is a great school I think anyways. I checked out your website, and your looking great. I'm still rather swollen, so hopefully it will go down in the next week. I went to my OS today, and he informed me that I might not be able to talk for the whole 6 weeks wired. I guess it's not that long though anyways, a little under 5 weeks left. Any news on getting your wires off early? Well hope your doing well. ~ > > > > Hello everyone! Guest guest
Thanks! Yeah...if you're wired like I am i can't really talk...i relate it to trying to talk through a pillow...it's muffled...some of it is understandable but it's b/c of the bite plate between my teeth...it's went by pretty quickly for me...i can't believe i'm almost at the 3 week point although i think i might go crazy if i had to have the wires on for six weeks just from wanting to chew something...and i'm someone who sticks my tongue out at like my mom and close friends as a lighthearted gesture alot and i can't do that and it's bugging me b/c there have been times i've wanted to...haha...but yeah...no news yet...i'll find out friday...he's actually going to take them off so i'll at least have a few minutes of freedom...but if that doesn't go well then they have to go back on for a few days...i definitely have to have them off by next Wednesday though b/c I move into my dorm on the 19th...*sigh* but hopefully i'll end up coming home with like bands to wear at night or whatever...he seems to think my healing has been going quickly..he usually sees his patients twice the second week after surgery but he only had me come back once...so hopefully...keep your fingers crossed for me -- > > > > > Hello everyone! Guest guest
I'll definately keep my fingers crossed for you, I'm sure it will work out just fine. So you will have to wear bands, instead of the wires? Well I'm completely wired shut, and my voice is also muffled. Some people understand a few words I'm trying to say, but mostly I write everything down. Anyways good luck again with college, it's a great time. ~ > > > > > > Hello everyone!
