Hi,

Yes, this is way the process started for me. I saw a TMJ specialist

who sent me to the oral surgeon who then, in turn, referred me to the

othodontist. At the time, I was on active duty in the military so

insurance wasn't even a factor. It then took another year before I got

the braces. The orthodontists didn't want to touch me. They were

concerned about the health of my teeth and the degenerative changes in

the joints as well as the severity of my bite. The orthodontist

thought it was too risky so the TMJ specialist and oral surgeons had

to work hard to convince her to put the braces on.

It could be that the orthodontist could move your teeth so you have a

more functional, if not perfect, bite and therefore avoid surgery

altogether.

I hope your son feels better.

Hello, Reni - Sounds like you are about to start the process; yes, I

started at my OMS but only because I had originally seen him for an

extraction. He then referred me to an OD to get my Ortho Consult & Work-

up; after the OD was done with me, he sent me back to my OMS for

my " official " Orthognathic Consult, which I've just completed (I had

two meetings with my OMS:July 5th and August 3rd). I got my brackets on

July 26th and the spacers last Tuesday. This Tuesday is my " Get the

Rest of the Ortho Hardware " Day - spacers come out and bands/archwires/

ligatures(o-rings) get put on. The spacers didn't hurt me - they're

just a nuisance: feels like food is stuck in between my molars. I'm

getting used to the feeling of the brackets on my teeth; so far so

good! Nothing too awful so far; I have lots of wax for those little

discomforts. Hope your son is feeling better! ~~~~ Diane

Okay, that makes since. I saw the OS first because I saw the same

practice five years ago (my dentist referred me). My son is in

braces and they put his spacers in and a few days later did the rest

of the hardware. Maybe that's because he's younger? Thank you, I

fret about this all the time and am trying to stay on top of

everything. Do you know when your surgery will be? Thanks for your

good wishes for my son (we find out tomorrow if he needs pins). He

is really bummed about missing the football season.

Hello, Reni - This stuff can get rather confusing, huh? Do you know

when you will get your braces? My surgery will be next summer - I

need to have braces for ten months before I get the surgery, but if

my teeth move faster then I'll get operated on sooner: Come on teeth,

GO, Go, Go!! LOL!! I'll let you know how I feel tomorrow after the

rest of my hardware gets put on! ~~ Diane

Hey! Confusing is not the word. I'm not sure when I will get the

braces. The ortho office called yesterday and moved my appt up to

Aug 11th. Yeah!!! I am ready to get this going. I want to get this

set up so that I can go on the same days that my son goes. Mother &

son ortho. HAHA. Let me know how you are feeling. I am so curious

about all of this and how everything comes together.

Reni - Well, I survived my ortho appointment! My OD and his assistant

are awesome! First, the spacers were removed. Then, the correct size

of bands was selected for my first molars by the assistant; my OD

cemented them to my teeth, pushing them into position. The bands for

the second molars won't be installed until January; they are needed

for the surgery. The assistant then proceeded to install the

archwires; she started on the bottom but one of my brackets there

fell off, so she decided to put the wire in on the top instead. After

the top was done, she replaced the bracket on the bottom and then

wired the bottom. The bottom has a few problem areas: one is the

vacant area left from the extraction I had in May, and the other is a

crowned tooth (a bicuspid, I think). The crowned tooth was left

unbracketed but the wire passes by the tooth. The other, the vacant

space, was " fitted " with a spring which is strung on the wire; the

spring acts to prevent other teeth from moving into that space.

Biting down on the left side of my teeth is strange, as the upper

tooth which opposes the empty space is hitting the now-banded tooth

behind the empty space. I haven't attempted to eat yet; the whole

post-surgery liquid diet thing seems really tempting right now - LOL!

This is only my first day with the total braces ensemble, and I'm

sure that by the weekend I will be better. I'm NOT in pain at all -

just slightly uncomfortable with the sensations in my mouth. You will

probably have a different experience that I'm having, so don't worry

about it, okay? I dropped by my OMS's office on the way back to work,

but he was on his lunchbreak out of the office so his receptionist

and his insurance manager took a digital picture of my mouth for the

Dr. to see. My OMS has been VERY supportive so far, so I thought he'd

like to see my mouthful of hardware, as he loved seeing my brackets

last week at my appointment with him. Hope everything will be moving

right along with you too, but pleez don't worry - it will all be

okay! Write back when you can. ~~~~~~ Diane
