I'm so happy to hear that Noah gained 7oz. We celebrate each and

every one around here. Just to give you hope, Max is now about

5'5 " , weighs 121 pounds and we have ot tell him to STOP eating.

Never would I have thought that my totally g-tube, then j-tube fed,

son would be eating the refrigerator! He eats like my friends' sons

who are his age. It's such a nice thing to see. The only advantage

he has over me is that when he weighs himself and sees that he's

gaining, he stops himself and changes his diet until he loses that

pound or two. We should all only have that control!

You asked about gaining weight before starting gh...I have written

several posts lately about that. Dr. Harbison and Dr. Stanhope both

recommend, or insist, should I say, that the kids achieve catch-up

growth by increasing caloric intake. Gaining weight should help the

kids grow until some point at which they stop. Then it is time to

start gh therapy. Not all endos agree with this, but for the

hundreds of patients they have, this has been the protocol that has

worked. I always quote Dr. H. as saying, " They can't grow on air. "

They need the calories in order for everything to work to their

advantage.

I hope this helps. I'm sure MAGIC has some articles or references

if you need them and you are a member.

Dawna,

Congrats on the weight gain!!! I hope your dad is doing well.

First of all I just want to say that I hope all is well and that the

little one's in and just out of the hospital are doing well! Hope

you all had a very Merry Christmas (for those of us that celebrate

that) and very Happy Holidays for those of you that celebrate other

things!

I had to fly down to London (Ontario)urgently at 7am on tues the 13th

as my Dad was failing. As it has turned out he has made yet another

miraculous recovery (he's like a cat I think) by the time I got there

he was off of most of the machinery and now he is even at home. He

is 80 years old and for at least the last 30 has had heart trouble

and a host of other ailments. I'm very thankful that he's pulled

thru yet again.

I got home on Tues the 20th and we were off to the ped on the 21st.

Noah gained 7 ounces ... it's funny how when you tell people that it

doesn't seem like such a big deal, but for a boy who has been the

same weight for the last 6 mos that was quite the gain for 1 month!

The doc was very happy! The endo from London had sent a letter to

the ped to let him know where things stood for Noah as far as GHT and

the ped seemed very pleased with this information too.

Anyway Deb ... I hadn't had a chance to email your endo before I got

wisked away to London and our ped now seems to be content with the

London one ... so I'm am going to give our London one your guy's

email address and suggest that if he wants he can contact him and if

both are willing share infor. (hope that's not as confusing as it

looks).

Does anyone know if RSS / GH deficient kids need to do catch up

weight before starting GHT? I'm going to take a look and see if

there are any articles available regarding that or not. Also I'm

going to take the ones that I have and order the new one I saw in the

newsletter to take to London when we go visit the endo again at the

end of January. We are supposed to be getting our GH and lessons

then and I'm just not sure if I'm comfortable with that and Noah's

weight.

Thanks

Thanks Jodi ... I can't wait for the day that Noah is eating like Max!

I was wondering if there was any difference in the weight gain with

GH Deficient but maybe it's the same whether they are deficient or

not. Noah had plateaued for such a long time so it was nice to see

the little bit of weight. Do you know what the calorie intake is

supposed to be for our little ones?

I'll be checking out the Magic articles as soon as I can get some

time away from it all to check out the list on the downstairs

computer.

Thanks!

Dawna,

Is Noah gh deficient? I don't remember... If that is the case, then

I don't think the weight issue is applied. I think if a child is gh

deficient, then gh is used as soon as possible.

Hi Dawna,

You asked about the calorie intake, I can tell you for my daughter who is

almost 23 months, the nutritionist wants her to get between 950-1000 calories a

day. It seems impossible. On a really good day she might have gotten that during

the summer. She was gaining little by little while getting around 700-800

calories, now she's been getting about 500 calories, and has continued to lose

and lose.

Dawna,

I just pulled out the latest Magic Foundation Newsletter and there is a

division on growth hormone deficiency. In fact it is in front of me right this

second. There is a woman named rebecca and she invites anyone to contact her at

rebecca53@ sbcglobal.net (no space after the @ of course). The division

consultant is Carmela Tufano.

How old is Noah? just turned 6 this week and she is 40.5 inches and

32.8 pounds. We live in NJ so we now see Dr. H regularly and will continue with

her.

Hi (and Jodi)

Thanks for the info ... I've got the newsletter too and I'll see what

I can find from the GHD Division. I'm just hoping that the two are

tied together somewhere in the literature, as I'm sure that there

must be a difference between GHD children/ RSS Children / RSS-GHD

children. I'll send an email to and ask her if they have

heard from GHD/RSS people.

Noah is 3 and is 32 " and 20 lbs. We live in Thunder Bay Ontario

Canada and see an endo in London. He's very good so far. Because of

the distance we have only seen him once so far, but he seems willing

to learn about RSS and work with others that have the knowledge. He

will be working closely with our Ped. here in Thunder Bay. We'll be

starting GHT the end of January. Noah has been taking Periactin

since the end of November and it seems to be working. The dietician

figures he's taking in around 800 cal... that's from a record that I

kept of what he was eating ... I figure it might be more now, as when

he first started the periactin he also had an ear infection and kept

on eating ... it can only get better!

Thanks for your interest! It's wonderful that you live closer to

Dr.H and are able to have her for your doctor. AND Happy Belated BD

to !

I am hoping that we'll be able to go to the convention in July and

meet all the wonderful people from this list!

Hi Dawna,

was borderline GHD. Dr H told us that it was good news because

it meant that when he started GH it would work even better on him and

hit has!! He has caught up so much both height and weight wise since

starting GH. In February will have been on GH for 2 years.

Since was only borderline, we did not consider looking into the

GHD division.

Judith,

Did Dr. H suggest to you that should be 15% weight to height even

though he was borderline GHD before starting GHT? Or was this not a

problem for him anyway? So was 4 or close to it when he

started? That's wonderful that it has worked so well for him! I'm

looking forward to all the steps forward and the Periactin has

definitely been one of those for Noah. Noah will be 3 yrs 4 mos when

we start.

Thank you for responding ...I'm hoping that if there are other out

there that are RSS/GHD or even borderline that they will respond too!

Thanks again.

Dawna,

was so badly underweight and so clearly RSS, that we didn't even

check for GHD until he was almost 4. tried periactin (still on

it) and everything we could think of before finally inserting a gtube

at age 2 years 4 months. We then built up his weight before even

looking at GH.

Dr H still wants around the 15% weight to height. We are slowly

weaning him off his pump and watching that number very closely.

was tested, it just wasn't done until we were ready to start GH

after having experienced catch-up growth/weight from finally receiving

enough nutrition.

At age 2 yr 4mo, right before his gtube he weighed around 15 pounds.

As of November 2005, he was 37 pounds and 40 3/4 inches. He is

getting closer and closer to where he should be based on parental

height.

Hi Dawna,

What great news! So glad to hear that Noah gained weight and that

he's taking the shots well. I'm sure you'll get into the groove of

them soon enough and feel better giving them to him. Keep in your

mind you're doing this " for " him and not " to " him. (I have to say

that to myself at all of Olivia's treatments!)

Thanks ladies ... Leah, Jodie and Debby!!!! Deb ... you'll never

guess what the endo told us ... we will pick up the GH when we go

down there for a 3 month check at the end of April and then we will

only go every 6 mos and our ped here will do the next 3 mos check and

then the GH will be shipped up to the pharmacy at our hospital.

Isn't that all too interesting ... I think I'll give this GH company

a call and see what's what! Thanks too much for the scoop and I'll

check out the injectease too ... sounds like something I need!!!

Gotta love this listserve I tell you! You guys are wonderful.

needle the exact same way but with this " pen " type of devise, you (as

mom) don't see the needle going into the skin. Instead you push a

spring loaded button and it kind of " shoots " the needle into the skin

and you press down the plunger on the needle and it's done.

> I did Adam's first few needles as you have been doing. Just the

needle straight into him. I hate needles and I did it because I had

to do it, but then I got a hold of an inject ease and I will never go

back. In fact, using the inject ease made it easier to have Adam do

his own needles.

> So once you google it, so you can see a picture you can order one.

Now it comes up on a diabetes web site, but no difference, it's what

many of us use religiously.

>

> What I did was print out the info on the devise and took it to my

pharmacist. I asked him to order me one. It cost $40.00 but I didn't

care and if it cost $100.00 I would still pay for it myself, it's

that valuable to me!!! Now the one I have we have had for 5 years now

and it's still working fine but I did order another one as a back up

(just in case ours gives up the ghost one night) but it's been in the

cupboard for a year now.

>

into it, and if you have any questions, just ask. You know it " might "

$40.00??? I never bothered to try to get my money back I was just

glad to have it.

to the hospital pharmacy to get the GH. Will you have to always go

through the London pharmacy?

> You see, down at Sick Kids, they tried to tell me that I *had* to

get my GH through them. Well when I called my insurance company and

Eli Lilly (who make humatrope) they both said " you decide--if your

neighbourhood pharmacy is better, then go for it " . And that's what I

did. Now normally my endo gives me a prescription for 4 months worth

of GH but my insurance will only pay for a box at a time which would

have meant multiple trips downtown. So I am really glad I called

around and got it this way. Now I just drive down the street when I

need to pick up more GH. But they were not going to TELL me that at

Sick Kids. It seems that there is some good money to be had when you

have this expensive stuff going through your pharmacy. I guess they

get a small percentage of the cost. All I know is my pharmacist

thinks I walk on gold since I brought my GH business to him. I don't

understand how it can be such good business for him, but he does

anything I need help with!!!

Hi Dawna,

You were great to put your foot down about that appointment. They had

to know you were coming from a distance!!! Good for you.

I am so happy to hear that Noah is doing well, and I also liked

reading about that injectease....just in case. I am in the states,

and i have a company fed ex the injection mostly because I travel and

my PMB can just forward it to me. I am realy happy Noah is

tolerating the shots. He is an awesome 3 year old!!!

We took Noah to the endo in London (Ontario) last week to get his

Growth Hormones and to learn how to give him the shots. It was a

little bit of a rollar coaster ride. They tried to cancel the apt

about 10 days before because the nurse that was supposed to train us

needed some personal time off. We said no ... find someone else to

train us. The flights were booked and paid for and the time off to

go was booked, as well as the arrangements for someone to look after

our other 3 kids.

We saw the endo and got the prescription to take to the hospital

pharmacy. It's funny it never even occured to me until I was handing

the prescription to the pharmacy lady that we should have asked the

endo to make sure that the GH was what we were expecting ... Humatrop

in a pen. Well it wasn't. We got Saizen in needles. I was quite

upset at first at the thought of needles but calmed a little when the

pharmasist mentioned to my husband that if anything went wrong with

the pen devices ... it would be good to know how to use the needles.

Anyway we got our training and Noah has now had 6 needles ... he has

them 6 days/week. He is taking it very well. We give him a

chocolate candy kiss and he says ouch and it's over. I have given

him the needles twice and it got worse for me each time. I feel so

guilty when I do it, but I'm ok when my hubby does it. I'm not quite

sure how I'm going to handle it when he goes out of town and I have

to do it all by myself ... but I'm sure I will survive!

We went to the ped yesterday and since Noah has been on Periactin,

which started the end of November, he has gained just over 2 pounds!

YA HOO!!!! Not bad considering he hadn't gained a thing for at least

6 months before that.

Another phase of life entered!
